  • After the onslaught of Ondoy in 2009, pocket developer John Aguilar had a what you call a “wake-up call” and envisioned a project called “Flood Adaptive Smart Home” to help the flood-stricken communities in Marikina City adapt to their perennial flooding problem.

Project Flood Adaptive Smarthome is essentially a 5-townhouse development with rafts, floating carports, and flood adaptive design and features. Around 5 years after its completion and with the aftermath of Typhoon Ulysses, John went back to the project site in Marikina City to check on the effectiveness of the project design and floating carport to find out if the concept served its purpose.

Summary of Project (Flood Adaptive) Smart Home in Marikina City: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjJLoADfA-M

On this podcast John Aguilar invited Architect Jason Buensalido, the Chief Design Ambassador of Buensalido Architects, who was tasked to design a house resilient and adaptable to future flooding in Marikina City.

Talking points with Jason Buensalido include:

    - The challenge of designing a flood and climate adaptive smart home.

    - Discussion on the other design and features of the smart home project in Marikina that helped minimize the damages by the recent flooding.

    - The processes they had to go through to make the vision come to life (from concept to construction).

    - His reaction after the project was put to a test in a real-life scenario.

    - Building more smart houses in the future.

Also joining the podcast is Dr. Ted Esguerra, a well-known humanitarian aid worker and rescue doctor and instructor. Dr. Ted was instrumental in the success of this innovative Flood Adaptive Smart Home Project as he led the testing of the design of the rafts and floating device in the Marikina River.

Talking points with Dr. Ted Esguerra include:

    - Being a Covid-19 survivor and leading the humanitarian and rescue efforts in different parts of Luzon.

    - Recalling their experiments and testing sessions of the car float design in the Marikina River.

    - Adjusting behavior and adapting lifestyle in frequently flooded communities.

    - His reaction after the success of the floating carport design.

Also included in this podcast are footage of the recent flooding of Typhoon Ulysses courtesy of the home owners of the Project Flood Adaptive Smart Home. It will detail their experiences and show the footage of how their car was spared by the flood with the floating carport design and how the damages were minimized by the innovative design and features of the house.
