Melissa opened her first vintage store in 2011, and since then her business has evolved into a collective housing many different vintage dealers and multiple different stores in New York City under the Seven Wonders Collective name – and she shares the full story on today’s show. .

    Melissa says her dream day is looking at every single piece of clothing in a massive thrift store (because you never know where treasure is hiding.) It’s that love of treasure that left her with a massive vintage collection to begin with. And you bet she shares about some of those best treasure finds on today’s show – let’s dive right in!

    On today’s show, we’re chatting with Michelle, the owner of Salassan, a curated vintage clothing business. Michelle was raised in the suburbs of Paris, and then studied pattern cutting and fashion design in London. We chat about her experience working in the fashion industry and all the market vintage research she did during that time.

    In 2020, she started selling upcycled bags made from tablecloths at the Hester Street Fair, but when she found out her curated vintage was really popular and taking off, she leaned into that love that has long been with her.

    Michelle has a couple of solid vintage specialities, but one is undoubtedly fantastic leather jackets, and she shares with us what makes a dreamy leather jacket – and so much more! – on today’s show. I think you’re going to really enjoy it, so let’s dive right into it!

She does storytelling and educational work in sustainable waste management for organizations like Greenpeace Africa, Clean Up Kenya, and Threading Change, and her mission is to highlight the reality of waste and the fashion industry in Kenya.

    On today’s show, we talk about how Chemitei got into secondhand clothing, her love of crochet, and the incredible local upcycling community in her area. Plus, we unpack the challenges of sustainable waste management in and around Gikomba market in Nairobi – Chemitei believes the market brings into perspective the reality of overproduction and overconsumption in the fashion industry and it is important that everyone sees what really happens to clothes that end up in countries where they’re not necessarily needed.

    María Pilar, who goes by Pily, is currently doing a Masters degree in the Netherlands, and is deeply involved in creating investigative journalistic articles centered around the theme of migration and clothing.

    She shares her perspective on sustainable fashion and what she thinks is missing from the conversation. We discuss what it means that Chile is one of the biggest importers of secondhand clothing in South America and the impact it had on the local community, as well as her recent research on clothing and migration at the US-Mexico.

David’s business Honeymoon Antiques has been a New York City fashion and design staple since1997.     In 2022, David purchased the storied Sturbridge Show, which happens three times each year in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, the Monday before Brimfield. Sturbridge Show is a unique offeirng of antique & vintage clothing, textiles, quilts, workwear, and jewelry spanning the Victorian era to the 1990s.

Meagan learned the love of vintage hunting and restoration from her mom who taught her every technique in the book. After losing her mom unexpectedly in 2021, and finding her first vintage Coach bag “in the wild” Meagan began collecting and restoring over 400 vintage Coach bags.

    On this episode, we dive into the rich history of the Coach brand, including some background on Bonnie Cashin, the bags she designed, and the legacy that still holds today. Ultimately, Meagan loves vintage Coach because of the quality of the vintage leather, which is truly meant to last.
