  • Welcome to the 43rd episode in my drug pronunciation series. In this episode, I break down cetirizine and Zyrtec into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, and share my sources. The written pronunciations are helpful. Find them below👇🏻 and in the show notes for episode 304 on thepharmacistsvoice.com. Practice leads to mastery. Practice saying these 2 drug names.

Host Background: Kim Newlove has been an Ohio pharmacist since 2001 (BS Pharm, Chem Minor). Her experience includes hospital, retail, compounding, and behavioral health. She is also an author, voice actor, and podcast host (2 shows).

Cetirizine = se TIR i zeen

Emphasize TIR Sources: USP Dictionary Online

    Zyrtec = ZUR-tek

No syllable is emphasized in the literature, but I stress the first syllable, ZUR Source: Zyrtec’s YouTube channel (Direct-to-Consumer videos from the drug sponsor) Note: I was trained in pharmacy school to say “ZEER-tek,” not ZUR-tek. I only say ZUR-tek now because the drug sponsor intended it to be said that way. When I heard the drug sponsor’s pronunciation in ads, I was surprised to learn I had been mispronouncing it for 20+ years.

  • This is episode 300! In today’s episode, I celebrate my podcasting milestone, share clips from old episodes, express gratitude, share 20 lessons learned, and talk about what’s next for The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast.

If this is your first experience with The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast, thank you for listening! My name is Kim Newlove, RPh. I’m a pharmacist by training, and I have experience in hospital, retail, compounding, and behavioral health. I’m not in clinical practice anymore. Among other things, I’m an author, a voice actor, and a podcast host. My website is https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com.

    Thank-yous

Thank you God for unanswered prayers. Instead of the 30-year career in a traditional pharmacist role I aimed for, I got an interesting, non-traditional career that includes podcasting. Supportive friends and family, especially to my husband Nathan and my two sons. Dave Jackson for teaching me about podcasting and continuing to coach me (5 years and still going strong). To learn more about Dave, visit www.schoolofpodcasting.com. Don Baarns, my audio engineering mentor My audience. The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast has tens of thousands of downloads in more than 60 countries (in the last 30 days). Thank you for listening! Guests. This podcast has about 50% interview shows or panel discussions. Our conversations inspire my audience. Thank you for being guests!

    Lessons learned

Vocal confidence Better microphone choices Better microphone positioning Comfort, confidence, and skill with in-person podcasting Experience hiring a podcast editor. (Thank you, Engin Hassan.) I closed the gap (reference to Episode 83 with Sean Pratt) I can laugh at myself. Vocally and audio engineering-wise, I have improved tremendously Production schedules are important. I am coachable, and I can confidently coach others about podcasting. I need a “guest sign-up form” on my website. Otter.ai is helpful for show notes. Being able to copy a link to an episode and paste it into an email saves me time. It takes years to earn a reputation as a podcaster. Focusing on single topics feels right to me. I enjoy writing. 300 episodes helped me learn what I like to do and what I don’t like to do. If I had to pick between VO (voiceover jobs) and podcasting, I’d pick podcasting. I got my 300th follower on YouTube this week. Life is short.

    What’s next?

The next hundred episodes…ETA Fall 2026 Newsletters for the podcast (LinkedIn and email) Coaching new pharmacist podcasters. I am offering a webinar on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 8 PM Eastern for anyone interested in starting a podcast. In 2025, I will be pitching pharmacy organizations to hire me to run their podcasts at conferences. I don’t have to be on the mic. I can record a host of their choosing.

If you know someone who interested in starting a podcast or hiring me to help their organization with podcasting, please share this episode with them. Please subscribe/follow The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast on your favorite podcast player and YouTube to get each new episode right when it comes out.

  • The 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series concludes today with Part 3 of 3. The goal of the series is to inspire you to write a book.

Who is the third author in this series? It’s me (Kim Newlove, RPh/Podcast Host)! Today we’re talking about my eBook and audiobook. The title is Pharmacist Podcaster: A Podcast-Planning Guide for Pharmacy Professionals. It’s a 59-page ebook with 12 worksheets. The audiobook is 92 minutes long at 1X speed, and the introduction is included in this episode. I’ll tell you what it’s about, where you can find it, advice for pharmacist authors, and more.

I also have three guests in this episode. The first two are my publishers: Dr. Janan Sarwar and Dr. Theary Chhim from Publishing in Doses. We share a 30-minute conversation. Then, my third guest is audio engineer Julie Walthers from Whole Story Studio. Our conversation is about 30 minutes as well. Julie helped me with the audiobook.

  • This is my Summer 2024 update. In this audio newsletter, I update you on my business, my podcast, my family, and what I’ve been listening to, reading, watching, and playing.

    Business update

My eBook is done, and I narrated the audiobook version. I’m adding both to my online store this month. I will offer five other lead magnets this Fall. Plus, I’m starting an email newsletter.

The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast (my business podcast)

Several of my Series will continue throughout the Fall. Episode 300 should drop in October. Subscribe for all future episodes.

The Perrysburg Podcast (my local podcast)

Episode 56 comes out August 16, 2024. It’s about coffee.

    Family update

Kraig started his last year of high school. Derrick heads back to college this month. Nathan is looking forward to several fantasy football drafts. I’ve been knocking out projects, traveling, and spending time with family this summer. I also slept in a few times, went swimming, and ate ice cream.

What have I been listening to, reading, watching, and playing?

This is my favorite part. I talked about Sia, audiobooks, podcasts I, and what Kraig and I are reading. Although I watched some of the Olympics, I only talked about TV Series we have watched this summer. We didn’t play many board games this summer.

  • Welcome to part 2 of 3 in the 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series! The goal of the series is to inspire you to write your first book.

Dr. Helen Sairany is my guest. She is an expert on trauma. As we discuss her book, The We you Don’t See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma, she shares the following:

Her background as a trauma survivor Why she wrote The We you Don’t See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma What the book is about Her target audience When to read the book What she wants you to do with the information [after you read the last page] Where you can buy the book Advice for pharmacist authors

During our interview, Helen also reads two excerpts from the book.

Bio - written by Helen Sairany, PharmD (July 2024)

As a 7-year-old Kurdish child in Iraq, a country torn by war and conflict, I was spotted by a U.S. Marine deployed to my country with a grenade in my hand, who saved my life by exchanging the grenade for a bag of candy. He later escorted my family and I out of war to seek refuge in the U.S.

Because of my turbulent childhood, I was diagnosed with complex PTSD in 2013. Thus, I aspire to live in a world where the vast majority are trauma-informed, feel psychologically safe and valued for the work they put out, and return home fulfilled.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic began, I have been open about my dormant childhood trauma. I have been traveling worldwide to give talks on topics such as trauma-informed care, leadership, and the workforce.

After having traveled to more than 100 countries worldwide, I developed an appreciation for the diverse mix of cultures, people, and traditions.

My interest in trauma stems from personal experiences of living through wars, navigating complex relationships, and continually learning what it means to be human.

  • Many pharmacists are experts in a specific area. If you are a pharmacist, and you like the idea of sharing your expertise using a podcast, you need to listen to this episode. My podcasting coach, Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting, returns to the podcast today to inspire you to start a podcast. (He was also featured in episode 79 of The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast.)

During our interview, Dave shares some success stories, benefits of podcasting, podcasting tips and tricks, advice about MP3 production, mindset advice, monetization advice, advertising advice, and more.

Disclosure: I am an affiliate of Dave Jackson’s School of Podcasting. My affiliate link is in the show notes. Kindly use it if you sign up for The School of Podcasting. I became an affiliate because I learned how to start a podcast from Dave Jackson, and I’m good at what I do both because of Dave Jackson’s School of Podcasting and 5 years of experience.

If you are looking for a podcasting coach, I would highly recommend Dave Jackson. However, if you would like a pharmacist to help you plan your podcast, I can help you too. I have a self-paced online podcast-planning course for pharmacy professionals under the “store” tab on thepharmacistsvoice.com. If planning a podcast has been on your to-do list, either Dave or I can help you get started.

If you know someone who is interested in starting a podcast, please share this episode with them.
