Do you want to become self employed this year? Are you keen to find out what life is really like on the other side of having a job?
If you want to make the leap away from employment and earn your own living, this episode is for you.
Matthew Knight is a Strategy and Innovation Partner working for himself. Having left his job years ago to pursue this new path, Matthew has firsthand experience of the ups and downs that come with self employment.
In this episode, we discuss many of the areas that aren’t often told. Struggles with mental health, imposter syndrome, clients, companionship and more.
These are all such important topics, especially when you step into the uncertain path of self employment. I say this because going it alone brings a whole host of questions, choices and challenges. The so called ‘freedom’ that comes with working independently can very often lead to overwhelm, uncertainty and difficulty and we discuss our experiences of all these during this conversation.
Matthew was completely honest and authentic and I know this insight will be so useful to so many people in a similar situation.
Please enjoy my conversation with Matthew Knight.

Welcome again to Life Design Diaries, the business and lifestyle podcast where we bring you interesting conversations with interesting people.
On todays episode, I’m speaking with Tristan Thomas who is the Head of Marketing and Community at Monzo.
Monzo is the bank of the future. Since they started they’ve been busy building the best current account in the world an they now have more than one million customers using their debit cards. Unlike traditional banks, they have no high street premises, instead their service is provided by their app making it convenient and relevant to its customers.
To give you a slight insight into how popular this bank is becoming, recently they raised an additional £20m from a crowdfunding campaign… £18m of it came in just 2 hours and 45 minutes.
People who use Monzo, often turn into raving fans. Think about it, when was the last time you heard someone raving about a bank?
Tristan has pretty much been there from the start to drive this success and he’s only 26.
Please enjoy my conversation with Tristan Thomas.

“How can brands be built with customers” - Jamal Benmiloud
This week we’re thrilled to welcome a fantastic marketer and business owner, Jamal Benmiloud.
Jamal has had a glowing career. Having risen to become Head of Marketing at Redbull and VP Marketing at Monster Energy, he decided to stretch himself even further and start his own consultancy, EARN Studios.
Now Jamal works at Non Executive Director at Huel, a company we know well from episode #34 with Huel founder Julian Hearn.
This episode is one of our favourites by far! There is so much to learn from Jamal’s approach to business and life in general. In particular, we discuss:
His and his wife’s goal setting process - a really interesting process Starting and maintaining a lean operation Challenging the conventions of marketing agencies His experience writing his new book, Brand Love How Jamal approaches business ideas Some of the more challenging times when running your own businessREFERENCES

I feel strange.
I'm not quite as busy as I could be, and it's giving me more time for chats and side projects, but I'm feeling like I am not really doing anything productive.
Why are we so tuned to feel like doing paid work is productive, but doing exploration, investment in yourself and future-facing work is less important?
If it was anyone else, i'd be telling them to embrace the quiet times, and make best use of it... but following your own advice is far harder than dishing it out.
That was the LinkedIn post I stumbled across which lead me to todays guest.
I didn’t write this post, and neither did she, but it was her answer to this post, addressing this situation of feeling unproductive when focussing on yourself that got me fascinated into how she thinks.
Rachel Tillman is a psychotherapist, she helps people and organisations, successfully navigate change as they work toward wholeness and more meaningful engagement. She uses creative, refreshing, and honest ways to do this and believes work should be life-giving.
Yes, on this podcast we’ve had on what you’d call ‘successful’ founders of companies in recent weeks to learn how they built the brands they are so proud of, but I’m so excited to share with you this episode with Rachel and provide a fascinating perspective on a whole host of topics that can no doubt help all of us listening in whatever pursuit you have.
Just a quick caveat, none of Rachel’s advice should be taken as medical advice. More, her thoughts on these wide ranging topics
Its a good one, please enjoy my conversation with Rachel Tillman.

Sarah Knight is a New York Times Bestselling author. She’s written the fantastic books: The Life Changing Magic Of Not Giving A F**k, Get Your Sh*t Together, You Do You, Calm The Fuck Down.
These four magical books helped me personally make a mental pivot in my mind to break free of mental guilt, worrying and letting my own mind hold me back, paving the way for a happier, simpler life!
I’m very excited to share my conversation with Sarah herself, we have a chat about her lifestyle now in a sleepy coastal town in the Dominican Republic, her pilgrimage through each book, reactions to her no-fucks given approach and her new book, Calm The F**k Down.
Please enjoy my conversation with Sarah Knight.

If we feel bad when comparing ourselves to others, then we should simply stop comparing... Sound advice yes, but often a lot harder to do than the ‘simply’ suggests.
The Will Smith Effect is a concept I’ve created after mulling over this scenario for the past few months. It’s a different approach and I’d love to hear if you agree/disagree. Get in touch on Instagram to join in the conversation and let us know what you think.

“Think like a big business and act like a small one”
What's the worst that can happen?
Well, when The Primal Pantry, a Paleo brand on a mission to start a real-food revolution, slipped from the heights of growing a £1.7m turnover business in only 3 years, to running out of cash and having to take a significant loan from an employee, this mantra of ‘what's the worst that can happen’ would surely have taken on a whole new meaning.
Welcome back to Life Design Diaries, I’m Lucy Menghini and on this episode I’m speaking with Suzie Walker, founder of the Primal Pantry.
It was amazing to get to know Suzie and hear her fascinating story including how she started, her path to growth and how she navigated this particularly tricky time all whilst balancing the rest of her life including being a great mum to her daughter.
If you’re looking to start or progress within the food industry, this episode provides some great advice for you. And if you’re not in the food game, you can take so much from Suzie’s thought process, approach to growth and decisions she’s made.
Suzie also reveals her 4 tips for maintaining a healthy diet later in the episode.
Please enjoy this episode with Suzie Walker, founder of The Primal Pantry.

Hands up if you would like to be the owner of a brand that has grown so fast that in less than 3 years, that its gone from zero to turning over millions of pounds?
What about if you could take that brand into huge partnerships with some of the most sought after retailers in the UK? And what about if you could, say, have fans for your brand including Kylie Jenner, the whole love island cast and 342k of them on instagram.
Have you got your hand raised?
The Gypsy Shrine is the brand that has managed to do all of the above, like I said, in just three short years. The Gypsy Shrine is a creative cosmetic brand. They make face glitter, body jewels, glitter bums, glitter boobs, basically everything glitter and are adding to their products all the time as we discuss later.
I spoke with Jenna Meek, founder of the Gypsy Shrine and discussed the fascinating story how she and her, now growing team have managed to get into places the quite frankly, most startups would only dream about.
You’re of course listening to Life Design Diaries. I’m Ross Menghini and in typical fashion for this podcast, we’re not going to focus just on the sparkle, but dig deeper, into what its REALLY like to be the founder of such a business.
Jenna shared so much good stuff in this talk and I’m also honoured as this is Jenna’s first podcast interview, and so… you heard it here first, Jenna Meek of the Gypsy shrine .

This is my favourite conversation yet. On this episode of LIFE DESIGN DIARIES we welcome Julian Hearn, founder of Huel.
Huel (human-fuel) is a nutritionally complete powdered food that contains everything you need for a healthy, balanced diet. With the company only three years old and a turnover of £14m last year, Huel has raced to become one of the UK’s fastest growing companies.
Julian however was so close to giving up on his idea many many times. His story is inspiring and in this wide ranging conversation, we discuss:
Julian’s fascinating experience leading him to the development of Huel How Julian transitioned from an unfulfilling job to become a successful business owner Creating a strong brand that people love The importance of social media whilst starting up The ups and down of the food industry Much much moreREFERENCES
