  • The price of gas, the price of eggs and milk- these are the kinds of expenses that we’re very sensitive to as consumers because of how frequently we make these purchases. And don’t forget visibility of course with the price per gallon essentially plastered on electronic billboards we consistently drive past! But the cost of insurance feels like the exact opposite. We rarely shop for coverage, it’s not often discussed, and automatic payments insulate us from rising premiums. In the case of homeowners insurance there’s an additional layer of insensitivity in the form of escrow. But insurance is becoming more of a burden and here to tackle this problem is Lisa Gill from Consumer Reports. Lisa is an investigative journalist and we’re going to discuss everything from wildfires to prescription drugs, what to do if you receive an insurance cancellation notice, the steps to take when you receive a medical bill that’s way too high, and much more during our episode!

  • We’re joined today by Jessica Moorhouse who started out as a blogger, looking for a creative outlet and way to hold herself accountable, and is now a financial counselor, speaker, and host of her own podcast- More Money. She is also the author of the new book, “Everything But Money: The Hidden Barriers Between You and Financial Freedom”. Jessica is all about providing easy to understand advice, delivered in a non-judgemental way, and she believes that there’s a lot of stuff that gets in the way of us being able to achieve our financial goals. Maybe most folks already know how to invest, but what they need is help with the trauma from their upbringing!? Maaaybe we even get into our own money stories from way back when, back when we were little kids and how that shaped our personal views of money… we get into all of that and more during our conversation today!

  • We’re not burying the lede on this episode- we’re talking about the most pressing policies in government today and how they’re likely to impact our personal finances! One of the benefits of hosting your own podcast is that you have the opportunity to speak with some amazing folks who are much smarter than you- and that is definitely the case today. We’re joined by economist Noah Smith, author of the substack Noahpinion where he takes big complex economic ideas, and makes them easier to understand for the common folk like us! This is a change of pace because we tend to focus more on microeconomic factors… that being said, it’s good to take a step back and look at the big picture and to understand what’s going on with the water that we’re all swimming in, to reference David Foster Wallace. Given all that’s been going on lately with tariffs, this is a more timely episode, but we’re also pumped to get into declining birth rates, government spending, the state of the overall economy, how effective DOGE will be, the three key technologies of our day, and plenty more.

  • When most folks hear the word “sabbatical”, their mind probably goes to a professor with a tweed jacket, who has earned tenure at a prestigious university, who is going to use that time to write a book. Or maybe your values are more Judeo-Christian based and so you think of a period of rest after 7 years. And while that might be accurate for some folks, our guest today would say that sabbaticals don’t have to be that serious or formal. But on the other hand, they’re not just an extended vacation where you’re sipping pina coladas on the beach! We’re joined by investment advisor Cady North who is the author of “The Art of the Sabbatical” and she’s going to share why taking a sabbatical might be more of a reality for everyone listening. She shares why work breaks are more necessary in our modern economy, what a sabbatical is and isn’t, how to approach the idea with a spouse or partner, gathering the social support around you ahead of the decision, parlaying the benefits when you return to your job, a simple formula for being able to take a sabbatical every 5 years, and much more today!
