In episode 94 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by Voxbox, Chris Tester joins Sam and Mark to talk about making a stand in a directed voice session, how visualisation can put you in just the right creative space, and how to turn a wordy commercial into something more Shakespearian.
Our VO question this week is all about how to market the voiceover genres you want to excel in, without becoming a jack-of-all-trades!

Script 1
My freedive in the kelp is at summer's end when the water is still balmy from a season of sunshine. The kelp look shabby, abraded and overgrown, signs of imminent change and a shift towards autumn underwater. An invisible pulse of energy sweeps the ragged fronds one way, bending and flexing the stipes, then hauls them back the other. They flutter and billow in the flow like drapes in a blustering wind, as the surge pours through and over them. In heavy seas, this is where their strength lies. No oak, pine or redwood tree could survive such ferocity on land.
Script 2
I get that you’re upset. I’m not doing it on purpose.
Look, Monday night was just a few with the lads after 5 a side.
Tuesday, that was that works thing I told you about, ages ago.
Wednesday, we went out, and then last night was just a couple in
front of the telly.
I know you think I’ve got a problem, but I can stop whenever I want.
I don’t need it. It relaxes me. It’s how I unwind.
What? This? It’s the end of the week.

“Just a few more weeks and then you don’t have to deal with him ever again,” my makeup artist Mandy reminded me as we sat in the costume trailer between takes.
Since I’d set foot in British Columbia, Canada, and met Richard Brice he’d been a pompous arsehole. I was the Bonnie in the Bonnie and Clyde–style indie movie I’d signed on to as soon as the second season of Picture This ended. Picture This had been my big break. We’d started filming when I was nineteen and I’d moved down to London to do it.

Slender is the strand that guides our destiny - known only by true sacrifice.
In our Kingdom of Phantasia, no one understood this sacrifice more than Queen Helena.
My mother.
I saw this, when the neighbouring kingdom, their true intentions unknown, came to our gates in an attempt to conscript us for their last stand against the Dark Lands.
My mother refused them.
Her strength defined us that day. And in that moment, we felt destined for greatness.

In addition, the laid-over pleat design of Uni-fold benefits from another key feature. The uniform flow of fluid across the entire surface of the filter medium. In contrast, for fan pleat filters, the upstream flow channel of the medium is much more open than the downstream side due to the standard, triangular pleat structure. Consequently, the flow is highest at the bottom of the pleat.

Funny how things work out in the end. The dinner went really well, and bless him, Tom apologised about lying to me. He said he had been scared by the strength of his feelings for me and needed time away to figure out what he wanted.
I thought I’d try cooking oysters to start, then it was pan-seared pork chops in a creamy sauce followed by chocolate cheesecake; I had to buy that though.
We sat chatting afterwards, but he had to leave because he was feeling queasy. The last I heard he was in hospital on a drip, and they called me and asked me what we’d had for dinner.

About our guest:
Jonathan is one of very few trying to specialise in 'Voice Presenting'.
He's been speaking into microphones professionally since 1981, and was one of the first to do corporate VOG as part of the event rather than as just 'Ladies and Gentlemen".
He specialises in awards shows, doing all the tricky bits of script and keeping things on track while also reacting to anything that happens, but like any voiceover he can adapt his tone to suit the situation - it's just that not many voiceovers need the same tones as he does...
