In our latest, we talk with author and journalist Will Potter about the new status quo that will be the second Trump administration. We discuss the threats to immigrant communities and the First Amendment that protects journalists and activists. We discuss the fracturing of society, and the fracturing of left movements. We also discuss the impact of Trump on the far right, and, of course, Luigi Mangione. It's about to be a dark bumpy ride. Buckle up and we'll all do the best we can. Bio// Will Potter (@willpotter) is a thought leader and award-winning investigative journalist and author whose work has focused on social justice movements and attacks on civil rights post-9/11. He has been invited to speak about human rights and political repression before governmental bodies including the U.S. Congress, the Australian Parliament, and the Council of Europe. He was the first investigative journalist to be named a TED Senior Fellow, and his TED talks on anti-protest laws and secret prisons have been viewed nearly 10 million times. His book, Green Is the New Red: An Insider's Account of a Social Movement Under Siege, exposed the targeting of nonviolent protest groups by the FBI and was awarded a Kirkus Star for "remarkable merit." Will was awarded the prestigious Knight-Wallace Fellowship in Law Reporting, and is the inaugural civil rights fellow and distinguished journalist-in-residence at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. We’ve long known that the fossil fuel industry, and front groups like the Western States Petroleum Association, has created a system of denial and disinformation to prevent the public from knowing the full extent of the damage they’ve inflicted on the climate. But new revelations show that their knowledge goes back to the 1950s.Now, as the city of Los Angeles is burning, and a president who calls climate change a “hoax” is about to re-enter office, these revelations are more important than ever. In the first of a series of episodes that we are calling “Climate in the Age of Trump,” we talk with researcher Rebecca John with the Climate Investigation Center to discuss these findings. Join us on January 16th at 7pm for a panel on Media in the age of war and resistance. The panel will feature Flashpoints host Dennis Bernstein, Nora Barrows-Friedman with Electronic Intifada and Green and Red Podcast co-host Prof. Robert Buzzanco.
We’re living in challenging times with crises around war in the Middle East, renewed McCarthyist attacks on free speech, corporate domination of everyday life and escalating climate disasters. We’re also living in a time where large numbers of people have taken to the streets to confront those responsible for these crises. For decades, independent media has told the stories that corporate media has kept hidden. It has shined a light on the elites and corporations making profit from destruction of people and the planet.
As we enter another Trump administration, radical independent media will be more important than ever.
WHERE: The Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists; 1924 Cedar St. , Berkeley CA WHEN: Jan. 16th. Doors open at 7pm. Event begins at 7:15pm Virtual viewing: We'll also be live streaming the event on our Facebook Page RSVP: https://bit.ly/Jan16PanelEventJoin us as we discuss media in the age of war and resistance, why it matters and how to stand in solidarity with those on the frontlines.

Jimmy Carter passed away today at the age of 100. As ex-president, he was a person we should all aspire to be- Habitat for Humanity, the Democracy Program that advocated for democracy and fair and open elections around the world, and his opposition to Israeli apartheid. But as president, his domestic and foreign policies were the same as many other presidents. His presidency marked the abandonment of New Deal politics, the Democratic embrace of neo-liberalism, and deregulation of key industries. On the foreign policy front, he was a prologue to the brutal and dangerous era of Reaganism. Since being President, Carter has been a genuinely decent human, a diplomat and humanitarian. But as President, he carried water for the ruling class, both at home and abroad.

The NY Times recently published an essay titled "When Did Liberals Become So Comfortable with War?" This is a conventional media trope--that the Democrats were not a party of war but have pivoted toward that position. In this episode Scott and Bob go into detail about how wrong this idea is! The Democrats, the Liberals, since the days of Woodrow Wilson have been aggressive and warlike. In search of global markets and investment, cheap labor and resources, liberalism demanded International reach, with bankers and eventually soldiers spanning the globe to expand American power . . . all part of the core Liberal ideology. ----------------------------------Outro- "War Pigs" by Black SabbathFollow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) +NEW: Follow us on Substack (https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com)+NEW: Follow us on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/podcastgreenred.bsky.social)Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Alan Moore is one of the most important comic book and graphic novel creators in the business. His work has subverted the comic book genre and put radical ideas into the mainstream. In this episode, we talk about the influence that Seattle had on our own organizing in Houston, TX. In 2001, we officially formed the Houston Global Awareness Collective with our comrades. We focused on political education around corporate globalization, empire and anti-capitalism (sound familiar? maybe you heard something of this on a podcast). After 9/11, our emphasis shifted to the anti-war movements and eventually began a local campaign against corporate war profiteer Halliburton.

On November 30th 1999, protestors shut down the WTO meeting in Seattle and put the world on notice that the forces of globalization--the international ruling class of bankers, industrialists, politicians and others--would be met with force as they reshaped the world economy and caused more precarity and hardship. In this, our pilot episode, Bob offers a brief backgrounder on the way the global economy was transformed from World War II to the present, including discussions of the Bretton Woods System (pictured on the graphic), which created the IMF and World Bank, other trade agreements, financial issues like the "gold crisis" and the Nixon Shocks, and of course the development and meaning of NAFTA and the WTO.--------------------------------------Outro- "Call It Democracy" by Bruce CockburnLinks// + WTO Shutdown Organizers History Project (https://www.shutdownwto20.org/)Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) +NEW: Follow us on Substack (https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com)+NEW: Follow us on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/podcastgreenred.bsky.social)Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. On November 30th, 1999, a huge movement spanning labor, environment, human rights, fair trade and more literally shut down the World Trade Organization in Seattle. It was milestone in the growing anti-corporate globalization movement and challenged the inevitability of neo-liberalism.
In a new series of episodes, we're looking at the 25th anniversary of the "Battle in Seattle" talking with a number of people who participated in the organizing and its aftermath.

In our latest, Bob talks with Payday Report founder and senior labor reporter Mike Elk about the recent indictment of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.
In addition to being a crack labor reporter, Mike Elk has spent a good deal of time in Brazil over the past couple years and we’ve had several conversations about Lula’s victory in 2022 and the role of Brazilian authorities to go after Jair Bolsonaro who’s now been indicted for forging a COVID passport, embezzlement for selling Rolex watches gifted by Saudi Arabians at a mall in Pennsylvania, and now for his role, along w/ 36 of his political cronies, in a plot to kill his successor, Lula. And of course we made the comparison between the way the Brazilians acted immediately to hold Bolsonaro legally liable and Merick Garland was so weak, slow, and feckless in dealing w/ Trump.
Bio//Mike (@mikeelk) is the founder of, and a reporter for, Payday Report.

61 years ago this weekend, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. There's a school of conspiracy that says he was killed because he was a secret peacenik trying to end the Cold War and the war in Vietnam.
We disagree. JFK was a Cold War hawk through and through. Historic episodes like the Cuban Missle Crisis tell us the true story.
--------------------------------
From the original episode:
60 years ago this month, in October 1962, Americans anxiously heard news for almost two weeks straight about the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba, less than 100 miles away from the U.S. Nuclear War was possible, to some imminent.
In this episode we offer a brief history of the Cuban Missile Crisis and, more importantly, a remembrance and reconsideration of the events of October and JFK actions throughout the crisis.
JFK has been praised for his firm resolve, courage, and strength in handling the crisis but the reality is that he was provocative and almost caused a war against Russia. In this episode we’ll start by giving a background on JFK’s aggression toward Cuba, then we’ll offer a brief narrative of the crisis, and finally we’ll discuss how Kennedy continued his subversion against Castro’s government after theMissile Crisis.
JFK was not heroic. His recklessness and need for credibility almost caused a nuclear exchange. The media doesn’t tell you this story. Green and Red does .
