  • In today’s Q&A show, we have an interesting mix between lengthy emails and quick quips on YouTube—and lots of sprinting commentary in this episode!

Other topics include: Is building an aerobic base necessary if you have minimal training time? How often should I sprint? Can AirDyne sprints replace running? How much rest should I take when sprinting? And when it comes to eating breakfast: yes or no? And should dogs eat a carnivore diet? What about Omega-3 salmon: yes or no? I also answer comments on restrictive dieting, respond to feedback from an appreciative listener about a John Gray show, and talk about being intuitive to avoid overtraining.

Thanks for your interest and please participate in the conversation by emailing [email protected] or commenting on my YouTube videos!

    TIMESTAMPS:

Jim asks about the conflicting advice from people about slowing down to establish your aerobic base. If you don’t have time to train you still must build your aerobic base. If you can’t carry on a conversation, you are breathing too hard. [01:53]

The human is only capable of maximum explosive energy for only up to around seven seconds. [13:12]

Luke wants to know how often he should be sprinting in order to avoid injury. This really has to do with how much rest you take. [19:27]

Zanado asks about riding the Airdyne bike as he tries to keep training after a bad accident. [23:43]

Michael is asking to clarify how much rest should be between sprints. When you want to sprint, keep it between 10 and 20 seconds. [26:54]

Donna from Kona asks “Breakfast or no breakfast?” One has to be careful adding fasting, which is stressful in itself, to one’s very stress everyday life. [29:49]

Bacon is not one of the nutritious meats that you need in your diet. Chicken and pork have a very low score in comparison to cattle raised in the open. [36:09]

Sophia wonders if the Airdyne bike is a good substitute for sprinting since she pulled her hamstring. [40:12]

Grandma Patriot wants to know the best way to get her puppy started on a carnivore diet. [43:58]

Regina asks “Can sprinting work for people with exercise intolerance where they crash after walking?” [49:42]

Dee Bradford commented on Brad’s video where he was talking about hematocrit. A very high hematocrit is a concern. [52:16]

Angela was concerned about Brad’s mention of eating wild caught salmon. What about the Omega 3s and Omega 6s? [53:23]

Another YouTube comment points out that if our ancestors had more food, they probably would have lived longer. [56:47]

Ian writes in the whole point of working out is to cause stress spikes to your system. [59:18]

Quill5 heard the show about relationships wisdom from Dr. John Gray, and Quill learned that if they are about to get angry, they just hold on and think about it and relax and then they’re able to respond instead of react. [59:47]

Chad comments that it is easy to get carried away with strategies that could be characterized as biohacking. [01:00:22]

James is commenting on overtraining. When he realizes that he has been overtraining, he loses his motivation to get out there and exercise. [01:02:05]

  • I am joined by Mark Sisson for the wonderful occasion of a new book coming out—Born To Walk.

Tune in to hear us talk all about the book, from the title to what made Mark realize that this story had to be told, what the research about running has actually revealed, and why running is, in many cases, antithetical to good health for a lot of people. You’ll hear us talk about the fascinating research we discovered that supports this idea that humans were born to walk, and while we are able to run (and can run occasionally as a result of walking a lot, sprinting once in a while, lifting heavy things, moving around and moving through space and time), we were not born to run metronomic eight-minute miles every day, day in and day out as some means to achieving some longevity goal or some health goal.

As you will learn in this episode, the running boom of the last 50 years was built upon a House of Cards, and on the idea that humans are born to run. But, humans were not born to run—we were born to walk, and in this episode, you will find out why!

    TIMESTAMPS:

We are looking at increasing your longevity through low level aerobic activity. {00:48]

The idea that running was the best route to longevity has been downplayed. [05:56]

Shoes have made big changes in the way people run. With the thick soled running shoes, there has been no decrease in running injuries. [08:03]

Everybody assumes that running is the sort of gold standard of weight loss, of achieving good health, of mental fortitude, and being able to overcome discomfort. [14:32]

What is so appealing about a marathon? [16:47]

There are much kinder, gentler ways to achieve great health, not get injured and support the other things that you're doing as part of your longevity program. [21:10]

Why doesn’t running and burning calories work in pursuit of reducing excess body fat? [22:27]

There are two kinds of fat. The subcutaneous fat which is simply unpleasant and the visceral fat which is terribly harmful for your health. [24:51]

They promised better results with new cushioned shoes but these shoes have done nothing to decrease injury. [27:21]

Understanding chronic cardio is so important in the endurance scene. You can take a good thing too far. [36:52]

Mark had to change the way he pursued his athletic life.

After retiring from elite competition, how did he learn to train at a lower level? [45:09]

The Ordeal of the Obligate Runner is the title of one of the chapters. What does that mean? [48:31]

What is the difference between being a sugar burner and a fat burner? [56:54]

There is research showing that if you just have a lighter shoe, you save four minutes over a marathon. [01:02:36]

We encourage you to walk but you need to learn the proper form. [01:07:06]

What is the primal approach for getting more energy? You don't need to run to give yourself immortality [01:18:27]

  • I'm so pleased to introduce another show with my main man, Mark Sisson, especially on the occasion of yet another book launch of the exciting new title, Born to Walk!

We can't wait to release this book to the world and promote the heck out of it, but this episode is a nice comprehensive overview of the content in the book as we try to stick to covering things chapter by chapter. You will hear about the intriguing presentation—it’s really a two part book where part one details the broken promises and the unintended consequences of the running broom and how running is quite likely unhealthy for the vast majority of participants, while part two is embracing the Born to Walk lifestyle. You will hear about the comprehensive benefits of aerobic conditioning and building a base the correct way, the genetics of walking and the human imperative to walk for optimal health, foot functionality, and how to embark upon a full-body functional fitness program that is rooted in general everyday movement as a foundation, but also requires you to engage in the primal approach of strength training, brief intense resistance, exercise, occasional all out sprints, and of course, playtime.

One question I hear a lot is: “What's it like to write a book? What's the process like?” and in this show, I answer that question, sharing details of my writing process, the things I’ve learned from years of working on books, and my advice to people who want to write a book.

    TIMESTAMPS:

Brad’s advice is if you want to write a book you need to just start typing. [01:57]

Part one of the book covers broken promises of the running boom, weight loss, calorie burning, padded shoes, and chronic cardio. [04:44]

Part two is more positive, telling about the benefits of building an aerobic base and the benefits of walking in barefoot shoes. [07:48]

  • Let's talk about longevity and how the science can sometimes be BS.

A listener recently shared a prominent news story with me that suggests that humanity is hitting the upper limit of life expectancy and that people will top out at a maximum age of around 87, 90 for women and 84 for men. To quote the lead study author, S.J. .Olshansky, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at University of Illinois, Chicago: “We’re basically suggesting that as long as we live now is about as long as we're going to live, we're squeezing less and less life out of these life-extending technologies.”

In this episode, I talk about why this is a great example of how science can be stupid, inapplicable, misinterpreted and misapplied. There are highly competent researchers doing great, important work, with likely highly reliable results, but we also know that this is not always the case. In the case of the Blue Zones, principal researchers admittedly took their liberties with the information about eating habits in order to advance their plant-based agenda. The ways that research relating to exercise physiology can often deliver distorted conclusions because of factors like the nature of the subjects, the duration of the study, and the failure to control confounding variables is something I’ve discussed on the show before, and while I agree that we’re not magically going to live longer because of amazing new drugs, a far more interesting discussion to me is how we are ruining our natural human lifespan potential in modern times.

My personal view on this is that almost everyone has the potential to sail smoothly to 100, taking advantage of modern medical intervention when necessary, but mainly by simply not getting in our own way (and this even includes people that have been dealt a bad hand with genetics such as a family propensity for obesity, heart disease, cancer, and so forth). In this episode, I talk about some ways to not become a statistic and how to actualize your human potential by getting out of your way and doing some cool stuff too, and why the main emphasis must always be on health span, not lifespan.

    TIMESTAMPS:

According to a recent article advances in medical technology and genetic research are not translating into lifespan overall. Are we really at a plateau? [00:51]

The problem with these studies is that the scientists are looking at a population that is leading a very unhealthy lifestyle in general. [06:57]

In any scientific study, there are many variables so one always needs to view the results accordingly. [11:08]

You may have familial genes for predisposition for things like obesity, heart disease, cancer and so forth, but you need environmental influences to trigger those diseases. [12:07]

Can we do anything to defy those statistics about how long we are going to live? [17:05]

Sleep, rest, relaxation, recovery, and downtime are critically important. [21:45]

Circadian rhythm is a number one concern, according to Dr. Kruse. Minimize the light in your home after dark. [23:47]

Clean up your act. You cannot focus on longevity if you have crap in your life. This includes toxic relationships. [34:58]

Look at your behavior patterns. Be positive. Envision your happy healthy life because you are taking control of your diet and exercise for sailing into the long future. [40:22]

The media programs us to believe something that gets us to limit our thinking. [43:49]

When you focus on plant-based eating, for whatever reason, it is high risk unless you also get nutrient-dense foods. We need protein. [46:35]

Walking is the single most essential requirement for your health and longevity. Move frequently and take breaks from your work. [49:57]

Sprinting added to your daily routine is very valuable. [59:56]

Digital technology has played havoc on our social connections. Don’t put health and longevity on the back burner. Care about it! 01:05:42]

Beware of how consumerism is luring you with its profit-based goal of making money. [01:11:38]

    Set simple doable goals. [01:17:33]

  • Get ready listeners for a most unusual and heavy and unique show with my old friend Tom Hodge!

Tom is an endurance adventurer living an interesting dream life of enjoyable but extensive endurance exercise every day, traveling the globe for major events, mixing with top athletes and watching them perform, and being on this amazing journey that he's going to tell you about in this episode. You will hear about his recent global odyssey and how it turned into a fantastic exploration of how childhood trauma affects us all our whole lives, how we use distraction, endurance, suffering, and drinking to avoid facing things and also how Tom hit rock bottom and then abruptly turned everything around by staring at a wall.

You will hear Mark Sisson’s name brought up often in the story and learn about the special relationship Tom and Mark share and how Mark was the only person who “saw through everything.” I think this show will be really valuable for everyone to reflect on how we carry stuff our whole lives and the benefits of waking up and doing honest self-assessment. As my former podcast guest Bruce Lipton says, our subconscious programming occurs from age 0-7 and then we operate from our subconscious 95% of the time, for the rest of our lives! Listen as Tom goes deep and gets vulnerable, incredibly honest, and reflective as he talks about his wild ride. It’s a pretty colorful show—you will hear about how he went from UCLA student to being a highly paid model in Japan after getting randomly discovered—a career that took him around the world for 25 years. You will learn why Tom eventually rejected his victim mentality, reconciled his childhood issues with gratitude, self-exploration (without any outside help), and turned things around to where he stands today.

It’s wild, it's mind blowing, and you are going to love this show, especially if you’re a younger listener and dreaming of a career and trying to figure out which career path to take. Regardless of age or where you’re at in your life, there are so many valuable lessons to take away from this show, especially the importance of self-exploration and honesty and avoiding our collective penchant for distraction every second of every day so we don’t have to face things that might unlock a path to a more fulfilling and grateful life.

    TIMESTAMPS:

Psychological experts today talk about how our childhood programming is something we play out every day. [01:08]

It shouldn’t matter if you are first or last. It is what you get out of the activity itself. [06:12]

How does one define failure? How can one deal with insecurities? [07:52]

Childhood programming is being studied more and more as for its effects on our current personhood. [15:42]

Usually when are drinking excessive alcohol, you are trying to numb some childhood trauma. [17:40]

Tom had to leave his dysfunctional family and try to make it on his own. [20:56]

Because of Tom’s dyslexia, he had difficulty reading. He bought a book to read, determined to master that skill. At the same time, he committed to exercise, all this to avoid alcohol. [30:32]

Addiction to exercise can be toxic. [43:58]

If your grip strength is weak, it is directly correlated with your predicted lifespan.

The greatest currency one can have is time. [01:00:32]

How does one learn to deal with this subject of childhood trauma? [01:07:42]

There is much more distractibility in today’s world. Much more stress than before advanced technology. [01:12:26]

  • This is an important show to help you be the best you can be throughout life, instead of following the typical path of accelerated aging and hormone decline driven by adverse lifestyle practices.

Besides doing regular blood tests for male sex hormone panels, there is an obvious scoreboard to monitor in the form of visceral fat. Fighting the spare tire battle is the essence of aging gracefully, as visceral fat accumulation begets the accumulation of more fat and suppressed hormones.

The tips outlined in this episode are simple, doable, sustainable and inexpensive—I will cover fitness (emphasizing sprinting and lower body strength training), diet (emphasizing protein and ditching processed foods), some talk about supplements, healthy romantic relationship dynamics, and a bit of proven biohacking such as red light therapy and therapeutic cold exposure.

    TIMESTAMPS:

How about some lifestyle tips for natural testosterone optimization? [00:54]

When you want to think about hormone optimization, look first at sprinting. [04:18]

You have to watch out for a pattern of overly stressful workouts. [07:29]

The proper way to sprint is to give a near maximum effort of 92 to 95% and also take good recovery period. [09:27]

Brad talks about how he does his own sprint workouts. A six to one ratio recovery to work interval is the goal. [14:19]

Strength training involves emphasis on correct form, precise technique, and keeping your core stabilized. [21:09]

Monitor your testosterone level for your overall level of energy, vitality and anti-aging longevity status. [31:19]

When looking at your diet, the foremost objective is to consume sufficient protein. [34:27]

Vegans and vegetarians need to be very careful in your efforts to consume sufficient protein. [36:35]

People who engage in intermittent fasting need to be concerned about getting sufficient protein. [39:52]

As we age, our protein synthesis diminishes our ability to digest and assimilate and use protein as the building blocks for muscle and all other organs. [41:47]

There have always been arguments about the macronutrients, fat and carbohydrate, but the bottom line if you eliminate the nutrient deficient foods, you are on the right track. [42:52]

A spare tire is a sign of serious health disturbance. [46:48]

Whey protein, and creatine are the very best, cleanest, freshest natural sources of protein. [51:17]

There are many supplements that claim to boost your energy, strength, build muscle and increase libido. [57:56]

There are hormonal underpinnings that influence relationship dynamics. [59:45]

Red light therapy can also boost your testosterone production. [01:04:08]

There are some things to avoid that tank your testosterone. Stay away from plastics. [01:06:50]

A sedentary lifestyle promotes chronic inflammation. Keep moving. [01:08:44]

  • If you want some career advice, this is the episode for you!

While the topic of this show will be particularly relevant for younger listeners, listeners of all ages can relate to struggling with maintaining a positive attitude and hopeful prospects about the future. This episode was inspired by a young friend of mine who has just finished schooling and is looking to embark on a career, but feeling stressed about the opportunities, challenges, financial stresses-loans—the usual suspects.

A relatable issue for most people, and more than ever these days as the younger generation faces much difficulty with landing jobs and other challenging external issues (such as the rising cost of living in urban areas and housing prices). It can be immensely challenging to find time to even enjoy your free time when you have a life burden like this hanging over your head, and when is it going to change? Not likely anytime soon, so in this episode, I offer three pieces of advice I shared with my friend for acting most effectively during challenging times and for accomplishing your career goals.

You will learn how to “be like a machine,” what it means to pursue your inspired purpose, the one question to ask yourself any time you experience anxiety, stress, or fear, my thoughts on asking others for help, and more advice to help you navigate your pursuit of your goals.

    TIMESTAMPS:

It is difficult these days for young people to find their way in a career path. [00:49]

It is hard to maintain a positive attitude and focus at this time in your young life. You have to be like a machine. [02:50]

Learn to deal with setbacks and misfortunes that will come your way and keep going. Pursue your inspired purpose. [10:16]

Look at your progress as stepping stones. [15:22]

Sometimes your inspired purpose does not bring financial success. [20:58]

Ask yourself what should I be doing right now? When you experience fear and anxiety, redirect your focus to your values. [28:05]

If you tend to carry around your worries, fears and anxieties, instead of enjoying your life, realize that this is a game you play with yourself so you can save face. [32:42]

Reach out for help in a polite and considerate way and make sure you have something to offer. [35:55]

  • A listener asked me about what I think about the resets…..fasting, keto, carbs, hormetic stressors, and vegan propaganda..

My knee-jerk reply was that we all need to step back and focus on the big picture. It's also important to never get frustrated, and to work hard to stay open minded and think critically instead of succumbing to the marketing hype and the controversy and confusion in the health game.

It might be a great strategy to focus on self-experimentation. Be willing to experiment, measure results, and evaluate for future modification and refinement. I get into some of the Blue Zones talking points that can be described as propaganda and flat-out unsubstantiated (plant-based promotes longevity!), versus the most valuable takeaways for happiness and longevity (move more!)

If you hear anyone spouting maxims like this, turn and run screaming in the opposite direction: "A cup of beans a day could add two to three years to your life.” Here's an awesome Blue Zones insight: "They're driven by life's meaning and purpose. They’re investing in family, keeping their minds engaged and there’s no existential stress of being worthless in life like so many Americans."

Enjoy the show and check in with me at [email protected]

    TIMESTAMPS:

There is much controversy and confusion in the progressive health scene about how to pursue longevity. [00:48]

It takes a concerted effort to maintain our open-mindedness and our ability to think critically. [02:44]

Human life expectancy has fluctuated in the early years and now, with all the medical improvements, it has gone up, however, the USA is not rated very highly compared to other countries. [07:49]

When in doubt, do self-experimentation rather than relying on some information that is out there like the Blue Zone. The plant-based diet has been attacked by people in the know. [12:05]

A good goal is you should have around one gram of protein per pound of your ideal body weight. [19:58]

What about fasting, time-restricted feeding and calories restriction in pursuit of longevity? [21:49]

Brad is pretty sure he does not want to take any prescription medication unless absolutely necessary. He wants his body to work naturally. [27:08]

  • It is time for more Katy Bowman!

Katy is one of my favorite educators in the health and fitness scene and her Nutritious Movement movement is so awesome and has such a great following (check out her Instagram to see her thoughtful commentary and the beautiful, Earth-based lifestyle she is living out there on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington).

This is a very educational episode as Katy illustrates the importance of a movement-oriented lifestyle separate and distinct from one’s fitness regimen—so integrating movement into your day, throughout the day, and not just for one isolated block of time. Katy is also a book writing machine with a new book, My Perfect Movement Plan: The Move Your DNA All Day Workbook.

This is an unusual book because it is formatted like a journal, asking you to participate in the process and further connect with the message.

Instead of a simple Q&A about her book, this episode is a thoughtful conversation about the impact movement and fitness can have on the human body. You will learn why athletic training can often be counterproductive to health, and how to integrate movement into your daily life in a graceful and sustainable way. It’s really not a huge ask and it has a massively beneficial impact on your health because instead of trying to get your butt to the gym and get in shape, it’s more about being mindful of your environment and your surroundings, and utilizing Katy’s quick, actionable tips so you can enjoy a more movement oriented lifestyle.

Katy Bowman, M.S. is a biomechanist, bestselling author, and founder of Nutritious Movement. She has written many books on the importance of a diverse movement diet including Move Your DNA, Rethink Your Position, Whole Body Barefoot, and her latest My Perfect Movement Plan: The Move Your DNA All Day Workbook. Follow her on Instagram @NutritiousMovement and enjoy listening to this practical and informative episode with Katy.

    TIMESTAMPS:

How does one integrate movement into daily life? Even athletes need to get way better at having a more movement-oriented lifestyle. [00:51]

Most casual endurance athletes are overdoing it to the extreme excess and the extreme detriment to their overall general health. [7:04]

Cardio, strength, and flexibility should all be packaged together. [12:03]

By watching the Paralympics, people will be inspired to improve their exercise habits. [13:34]

People easily lose motivation like when they used COVID as an excuse of why they got out of shape. [18:32]

Sometimes we are strong in only one narrow area of fitness rather than all around fitness. What movements are functional for an average human? [21:34]

It really is quite easy to integrate movement into your lifestyle. Do squats in line at the taco truck, anyone? [27:48]

The fitness industry is pervasive. You are told you must buy exercise equipment and dietary supplements when maybe you can get what you need at home. [29:30]

Psychologists are exploring the reasons or excuses people have for not being more active. [33:10]

There seems to be a focus on athleticism rather than just recognize movement as important. [36:43]

Living in the digital age, we find ourselves constantly entertained and connected which compromises movement. {48:19]

Life is busy. It is so important to walk, walk, walk. [57:47]

  • My recent focus sprinting and high jumping in masters track & field competition entails a completely different approach to training than the endurance protocol and endurance mindset.

My former podcast guest Cynthia Monteleone (@fastover40 on Instagram) has been a big help recently for me to continue to evolve my approach and my mindset so I can thrive in track & field. In short, I've been applying endurance training principles to my high intensity peak performance goals and it's been hampering my performance and recovery. This is where you have to make the crucial shift in mindset to prioritize high intensity training.

I reached out to Cynthia for more guidance because I'm getting annoyed at my frequent minor injuries that linger for too long. Immediately it became clear that I'm unwittingly trying to train disparate energy systems and it's too much for my body to handle. In this show, I'll describe how I'm evolving from "easy/recovery" days in the endurance paradigm to proper rest days for a sprinter/jumper. Remember, the aerobic system responds well to low intensity, consistency and volume. The anaerobic system responds well to high intensity, short duration, extensive rest, and low volume.

I've also learned in recent years that the more specific and lofty your goals become, the more you have to narrow your focus. I can't pursue the disparate goals of Speedgolf and sprinting/jumping. Listen to my great show with Cynthia to learn more about her innovative approach and services at Mam808.org

This show will also inspire you to perhaps shift from an excessive emphasis on cardio/endurance training in favor of doing high intensity exercise and enjoying the best benefits for fat loss and longevity.

    TIMESTAMPS:

Brad is taking days off. It’s a new approach to his training. He’s found he doesn’t take enough rest and recovery days. [00:54]

We see most fitness enthusiasts are way heavily weighted to the cardio side and usually highly deficient on the explosive high intensity side. [05:41]

Around 50% of regular runners are injured every year from a flawed approach that is characterized by running at a pace that is too strenuous. [09:10]

You are encouraged to do harder, shorter duration but really explosive workouts. [11:24

  • Hey listeners, it's time for the Light Show with Scott Chaverri, founder of Mito Red Light!

He is doing some amazing work with his therapeutic red light exposure and the familiar panels that you can find on mitoredlight.com, the most powerful and the most affordable red light panels on the market. But, he's also an inventor at heart who loves to spend his time tinkering with all kinds of different technology. And at the end of the show, you're gonna hear about some of his dreams and big picture ideas that are really fascinating—one of them has to do with how unhealthy our typical sources of indoor light are and the popularity of energy efficient LED lights, which are constantly flickering (120 times per second)—something that is not good for the brain. But as you will hear, Scott is actually working on a solution for that, and it could change the planet.

In this episode you will learn about the wonderful story of how red light therapy can improve your health and the ways it improves your mitochondrial function will finally be explained in detail so you can really understand all the science and the research behind this and why red light panels work. You will hear some great takeaways from this show, such as why 10 minutes is the ideal exposure time and why more is not better with your red light practice. It was so interesting to hear Scott explain the whys behind the health practice of therapeutic red light exposure—a health practice I have been committed to for the past five years now. Every day, I devotedly stand in front of my panel, exposing my eyeballs and other important balls to the red lights for the optimal duration.

If you want to know the science behind why I do this and why this works so efficiently, you will love listening to this informative show with Scott.

    TIMESTAMPS:

Scott Chaverri is here to talk about therapeutic red light exposure. Many of the indoor lights we have are not healthy. [00:53]

Scott started on this journey of exploring the scientific benefits of red light therapy when he himself was dealing with health problems. [03:15]

Red light therapy helps with testosterone. [07:18]

How does red light therapy benefit sleep? [10:32]

So the safest and most beneficial parts of that UV spectrum are helping with mitochondrial function, cell repair, removal of waste products, that kind of thing. [14:12]

If you're worried about photoaging your skin and you don't want to be in direct sunlight, go to a green space, sit in the shade. [20:59]

Do we always need to wear sunglasses? [26:17]

Spending too much time in the sun is counterproductive. How is red light therapy different? [30:47]

So many people tend to trade their health for dollars. [36:11]

Besides red light therapy, what else is going on in this area? [40:06]

Some people might put green tea bags on their crow’s feet area for part of the red light therapy. Sometimes it helps with hair growth. [42:53]

How does a hydrogen water bottle work? [48:26]

The LED lights that we are exposed to so much have some drawbacks. [52:28]

  • I respond to some great comments from listeners in this Q&A show!

We are starting off with John Gray’s famous essential male and female relationship assignments, what supplements I am taking (and not taking) these days, and how protein intake warnings have been refuted (10 eggs a day is okay!).

I also answer a question about the minimalist shoe fad–is it dead, or is barefoot the way to go? You will learn how elevated, cushioned shoes enable poor form and are the driving cause of injuries and finally, what the optimal duration for high impact and for low impact sprinting is.

    TIMESTAMPS:

The first question Brad is answering is from Lily who comments on the podcast with John Gray regarding respecting the biological and hormonal underpinnings in a relationship. [01:42]

This question asks about which organ supplementation should be avoided. [04:06]

Sugar is not your enemy. Processed foods are. We want a nutrient-dense diet. [06:00]

In the podcast with Jay Feldman, it is mentioned that Andrew is consuming 100 eggs every day. The reader is questioning that. [12:46]

The next writer is challenging the five-toed shoe benefits. You have to transition carefully. Running shoes are not as safe as we have been told. [25:25]

Novice joggers have the inclination to heel strike and overstride for an assortment of reasons beyond wearing a cushion shoe. [35:04]

In referring to Brad’s ideal of 20 second maximum when sprinting, the questioner asks, “should I sprint for longer if I have excess body fat and need to burn more calories?” And the answer is absolutely not. [41:55]

Patricia is asking about the amount of time one should use HIIT. [48:25]

  • Formerly anonymous Arizona high school running coach Mike Scannell has become a sensation in the American distance running community with the amazing success of his runner Grant Fisher, the undisputed king of American long distance running!

Grant had a sensational Paris Olympic Games, winning bronze medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. These are events where only a handful of Americans have ever won Olympic medals, ever! Mike is an old friend, a former elite collegiate runner, and a fellow competitor on the professional duathlon circuit, and it was amazing to catch up with him and detail the amazing Olympic journey!

The backstory of Grant and Mike is pretty amazing. Mike coached Grant in high school in Michigan, where he became one of only eight high schoolers ever to break four minutes in the mile. Grant then headed off to a great NCAA career in Stanford and a pro career with the elite Bowerman Track Club team in Oregon. In a surprise mid-career shift, Grant decided to go about it his own way. He moved to Park City, UT for altitude training, and phoned up his old high school coach looking for guidance. This is less than a year before the Olympics as America's top distance runner! In this show, Mike will discuss the risks and pressures elite athletes face (and their coaches!) You'll be taken behind the scenes for the Paris Games and the extraordinary measures Grant and Mike took to ensure he could focus and succeed.

You'll love the story of how Grant and Mike were locked inside the Olympic stadium late at night after winning his 10,000 meter bronze. You'll learn about Mike's evolved approach where he is solely focused on serving the athlete and avoids getting the all-too-common coaching ego into the mix. You'll learn about today's popular scientific approach to endurance training centered upon measuring and controlling blood lactate levels during workouts, and why many runners "ruin their workouts" with a less disciplined approach. You'll learn the benefits of altitude training, and how Grant's mindset and extensive rehearsals helped him execute awesome strategy at both Olympic races.

At the end, Mike provides some profound insights for young runners and their parents about the importance of being motivated naturally and intrinsically. You'll also learn why, a couple decades ago, crime didn't pay in Tucson, AZ, where you might have gotten into a foot pursuit with someone who would most definitely outlast you...I've known and studied lots of coaches over the years, and I don't think you'll find a more healthy and evolved disposition than that embodied by Mike. No wonder Grant phoned him up out of the blue and asked for help going and getting some Olympic medals! Enjoy the show. Young runners can get a daily tip of inspiration by following Mike on X @realironmike

    TIMESTAMPS:

We take a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on with Olympic athletes and their coaches. [00:53]

Coaching Grant Fisher in the Olympics, Mike is able to share his expertise. [06:06]

What we commonly see these days are high profile teams with big sponsors. It’s a different approach from what Mike and Grant have done. [07:54]

How did Mike’s own experiences with coaches help him to get this particular disposition? [13:43]

With the scientific approach, the thing the runner can do is check blood lactate. [16:20]

Besides checking blook lactate, Mike checks heart rate, hematocrit and hemoglobin and other things. [19:38]

When training at altitude or in the heat of Arizona, you have to cut the tempos why back. [21:19]

It is very easy to ruin a workout by using that competitive intensity to work really hard. [23:40]

What kind of volume and load can you put on the runner so that he absorbs the training and is ready for the next session? [27:33]

You can have all the tech toys in the world but you have to listen to it! [29:48]

When you make a detailed plan for the athlete, how often to you deviate from that plan? [31:17]

Grant takes good care of himself. He takes care of sleep, massage, his food at home. [39:58]

How do they manage the constant risk of overuse injuries? [41:05]

In taking on the job to coach Grant Fisher, did you feel nervous about the whole USA expecting some medals? [45:36]

What was his experience in Paris? What was the race strategy? [50:00]

Living and training at altitude helps your body build additional red blood cells, but when you come down to sea level, you lose some of the benefits. [59:34]

When running in the prelim, all you need is to be in the eight finalists. [01:04:13]

Staying in the Olympic Village with the other athletes can be fine for social interactions, however, when you have big important events to still compete in, being around rowdy parties doesn’t work. [01:05:53]

You have to plan on when you need to go faster when you are in the big race. [01:09:15]

There is no reason for Grant Fisher to take the lead in the Olympics first 4,000 meters. [01:12:46]

Mike’s coaching method involves only when the athlete himself asks for coaching, not if the parent asks. [01:21:50]

High school kids don’t know what they can’t do so please don’t tell them. [01:25:55]

  • My friend sent me a recent DEXA scan report and was distraught about his body composition score.

This is a lifelong athlete—excuse me—super-athlete, who has performed at the highest level in his sport for decades. After being sidelined by surgery, and perhaps some less scrutinized dietary choices, he drifted outside his familiar performance zone into the softy zone.

If we all consistently deployed our vast knowledge to our lifestyle habits, we would all be kicking ass all the time. That’s not so easy, so we are often compelled to try and correct course. Sometimes, driven, focused, highly competitive types will get the urge to take desperate measures: “That’s it! It’s time for exhaustive workouts and prolonged fasting!” It’s also becoming a popular theme where “calorie deficit” is the end-all. This insight might be true in a vacuum, but we have to think about real-life variables, such as hormone optimization (especially for women), lifestyle factors including access to nutritious foods, psychological issues relating to food, the difficulty is accurately counting calories burned, the difficulty in accurately assessing what your body does with ingested calories, and so forth.

If you want to lose excess body fat, know that while it is a complex challenge, it is actually completely possible to accomplish if you follow a sensible approach. In this episode, you will hear the five tips I suggested to my friend to get things headed in the right direction. If you or someone you know wants to lose weight, this show will put you on the right track and help you lose excess body fat in a healthy way.

    TIMESTAMPS:

What are we to do when we drift from being a solidly built athlete into the softy zone? [00:47]

First, we have to acknowledge that we probably haven’t been using all the knowledge we have about good nutrition. [01:56]

Extreme diet restriction and grueling exercise habits are not the best way to go. [03:08]

We want to have a healthy psychological relationship with food. [05:45]

We need to pay special attention to visceral fat accumulation. [07:23]

One thing to try is fasting. This gets you away from access to calories for a certain period of time. [10:26]

You can try restricting certain macronutrients. And eliminate processed foods. [15:17]

If you overconsume processed sugar, you will store it as fat. However, sugar itself is burned for energy. [18:00]

Eliminate overly stressful exercise patterns. [19:23]

To really get the best benefits for reducing excess body fat and for overall fitness breakthroughs, you must introduce brief, explosive, high intensity strength workouts and sprint workouts. [23:23]

  • Did you know that defensiveness not only causes a cortisol spike, but also releases the powerful enzyme aromatase, and that has an effect on testosterone?

In this show, we’re hearing some more reflections from John Gray—one of my favorite podcast guests ever who always brings the most profound insights—about how to avoid breaking up and instead, reconnect with your partner. You will learn the most common causes that lead to breakups, why marriage statistics are not reliable, what to do when your partner is not happy, and why sexual desire is our strongest drive and of top importance in our relationship. You will also hear great, effective tips for making communication easier with your partner, like how John advises women to “express everything as a preference” since most men just want to be your hero, and as John explains, we have to realize that we are most vulnerable with people we are closest to and most humans don’t like criticism in general. You will also learn what phrase is usually the man’s signal to cease the talking (which, if it continues, will cause the man to get defensive—and this poses problems as it causes a cortisol spike which releases aromatase, and this causes testosterone to convert to estrogen!).

If you are single or in a relationship, you don’t want to miss this show—you will learn so much that will positively affect your relationships, like why you should never try to change the other person, and why you should never make continued requests or demands, why John says to never speak when you have a negative emotional charge (as a man, but this is good advice for all), and more!

    TIMESTAMPS:

Some of the major causes of relationship breakups are suppressed emotions and communication problems. [00:49]

Keep yourself happy. Do not depend on your partner to make you happy. [03:39]

Ideally, the man wants to feel like the hero, the guy who can come through for the partner and family. [04:55]

It works better when women express things as a preference and compliment your partner for doing things. [08:53]

It is man’s basic nature to solve problems so if you just want him to listen, you need to say that. [09:47]

If a man says, “I hear you,” that is the signal for the woman to stop talking. [10:45]

Don’t try to change the other person. Many women are unaware of how controlling they are. [15:33]

Men: never speak with a negative emotional charge and learn how to make a graceful exit. [19:51]

Men can take the time away to reflect on their contribution and see what triggers there are. [21:41]

Learn to validate the women’s challenges. [29:46]

What techniques can the male learn to deal with emotional disturbances or relationship conflict? Number one: live your life so you don’t have to say “I’m sorry” so often. [30:43]

You don’t have to get defensive, men. Execute the desired behavior. It doesn’t mean you are caving in. [32:32]

You must understand relationships as a 80-20 proposition. [36:52]

The number one most attractive thing a partner can do is watching your partner excel from a distance. [39:39]

Remind yourself there are times when it’s not your problem to solve, but you can be supportive. [41:00]

    Sex spikes testosterone. [42:42]

  • Welcome back to Brad’s Olympic Track & Field wrap up!

I hope you enjoyed the lengthy presentation summarizing the men’s events, and now it’s time for a show dedicated to the awesome performances of the females on the track and the field for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In the first show, I gave you a little bit of an overview about my fascination with Olympic Track & Field and I also mentioned something I talk about more in this episode, which is how great it is to see a sport where the males and females are equally represented in the categories of stardom and coverage—unlike some other sports that tend to exist in the shadow of the men’s games (like basketball).

If you want to hear a comprehensive review of this year’s Olympic Women’s Track & Field Competition, this is the episode for you.

    TIMESTAMPS:

This podcast looks at the women’s performances in the Paris Olympics from Brad’s perspective. [00:49]

It is frustrating when the commentators talk about expectations of the outcomes of the races. [05:49]

The 400 was a fantastic race. Marileidy Paulino, from the Dominican Republic, had one of the fastest runs of all times. [08:06]

Depending on the race distance, the athlete learns a certain race pattern. [11:06]

Many of the athletes commented that the construction of the track and the super spikes worn in Paris made a difference. [15:38]

In some countries, if you are a number one world ranked athlete, you have a pass to be selected for your event before the Olympic trials. [18:40]

Faith Kipyegon reigned for the third consecutive gold medal. Jessica Hull has been steadily taking down her time. [22:00]

As usual the doping suspicions are always around. Now days these athletes are subject to random unannounced year-round drug testing for the officials. [24:32]

Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet had an exciting finish. Sifan Hassan had an incredible race, went home, rested and came back to run in the marathon as well. [29:47]

The 100-meter hurdles is always a very exciting race most often finishing in a photo finish. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone got the world’s record in the 400-meter hurdles. [35:27]

The Steeplechase is dominated by the Africans on both male and female sides. The four by four brought the US team more medals. [44:12]

The high jump saw records broken as expected. Yaroslava Mahuchikh from Ukraine was very proud to represent her country. [48:01]

Pole vaulting found the two winners who shared the gold in the world championships meet head to head again, with Kennedy clearing the high bar this time. It is so great to see. [49:53]

Long jumper Tara Davis Woodall from USA came away with the gold. Thea Lafond from Dominca won the gold in the triple jump.[50:29]

Shot put, unfortunately we saw the very popular Chase Ealey get knocked out in the qualifying. US did get gold in the discus with Valerie Alman defending her world championship. [51:47]

In the hammer throw, Cameron Rogers from Canada first, And the javelin was won by Kitaguchi from Japan. [52:55]

In the Heptathlon, Shari Hawkins made her Olympic debut at age 33 but, unfortunately, she got knocked out of the competition. Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam went home with the gold. [53:27]

Mixed relay is a new event in the Olympics. The teams can choose what order they wanted to run their athletes in right when they first come out. [55:04]

  • I thought I would do a fun, different style show—Brad’s Olympic Track & Field summary wrap up show!

Track is my passion and in this episode, I go over some of the highlights, great performances, and fun backstories from this year's Olympic Men's Track & Field Competition.

    Enjoy the show!

    TIMESTAMPS:

The import thing is not to win but to take part in the Olympics. [04:23]

The coverage was excellent. However, the focus should be on all athletes wherever they are from rather than so much on athletes from USA. [10:18]

Long distance running has been dominated by runners from East African nations in the past, but Grant Fisher came through. [13:09]

Jamaica is amazing, being such a small country, producing amazing athletes. [14:50]

Medal counts is not the most important part of the Olympics. [17:16]

Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley have amazing performances. [23:01]

Leslie Tebogo from Botswana and Kenny Bednarek are two guys to keep an eye on. [28:37]

The human can only deliver a maximum effort for around seven seconds, and then at around 20 seconds you get overcome with lactic acid and you have to slow down further. [31:40]

Sometimes a wind meter is involved to compute the records. [34:48]

There is a significant advantage in drafting in the running races, not just Tour de France and swimming. [41:09]

Why is being a gracious loser important? [46:27]

There are a lot of older records on the women’s side that should be wiped out. [54:58]

The steeplechase is very unusual but exciting. [56:55]

The 4 x 100 relay event is very controversial. [01:00:05]

The Marathon is dominated by runners of East African descent. The 20-kilometer walk was an event folks trained well for. [01:10:41]

The high jump was fun to watch. The finalists had to have a jump off. [01:12:19]

Pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis is coached by his parents. He started pole vaulting when he was three years old. [01:14:26]

The long jump and the triple jump had amazing performances. [01:17:49]

The shot put was dominated by Ryan Crowser. Discus gave Jamaica another gold. Hammer throw gold went to Katzberg from Canada. [01:19:49]

The javelin throw was a surprise winner, Neeraj Chopra from India. [01:20:54]

The winner of the decathlon, Markus Rooth from Norway was a huge upset. [01:21:53]

  • I saw my friend the other day, asked “How are you doing?” and he said: “I’m trying to be a better parent.” What a cool answer!

The quip alone speaks volumes about his desire to do the best he can, and his self-awareness as he makes his best effort to raise toddlers. We ended up having a whole conversation about parenting as he began self-reflecting and spoke about patterns from his own childhood, his desire to avoid undesirable ones and model favorable ones, and how his peers kept him in check with great effectiveness. I told him I’d email him my all-time favorite parenting article, “The Power (and Peril) of Praising Your Kids: How Not to Talk To Your Kids”, and share my favorite insights about parenting young ones, as my kids are now 26 and 24, and this conversation ended up being the inspiration for today’s episode.

It doesn’t matter how old your kids are—there are great takeaways for all parents in this show (as well as prospective parents) about things like overparenting and the importance of observing cultural norms and perhaps choosing to do things your way, instead of merely following others, while still acknowledging that some circumstances require a very delicate balance (like “helping” your kids with their homework or college admission essays). I also discuss the idea that we actually have less influence than we think on our kids destiny, why it is more effective to praise the effort they make, rather than the results they receive, and the importance of realizing that while we do have a distinct ability to screw our kids up, their positives and successes will largely be self-directed.

    TIMESTAMPS:

To learn how to parent, we look at what we learned in our own childhood….what was good and what was not so good. [00:56]

It seems like kids are over-parented these days. [03:54]

These days if a kid gets a B in high school, their chances of being accepted at university are slim. [07:06]

Commercials during the Olympics showed different attitudes from parents regarding sports. Never give up on finding what you love. [08:56]

Parents have way less influence than we think on our kids' destiny. [12:54]

Give the kids opportunities and then stand back. [15:45]

  • In today’s episode I welcome track star Sue McDonald to the show!

Sue is no ordinary track star—she is shattering world records in the masters track and field arena going where no human has ever gone before in her age groups and putting out unbelievable times at 61 years old! This mother of three from Santa Barbara, California, is virtually on world record watch every time she competes, and I had a great visit meeting her personally in her home environment and finding out the secrets of what is possible when you take care of your body and you dedicate yourself to training and competitive goals and literally defy the aging process. Regardless of whether you're interested in trying to challenge Sue or take down her records, it's great to realize what's possible when you continue that dedication to peak performance and setting challenging goals and having a wonderful consistent training regimen.

In this episode, Sue describes her lifestyle and her training regimen as “boring”, but what you get out of that is the realization that these little things do really count every single day—and that you can get better even as you age chronologically. I can't think of a more inspiring guest to have you reflect on your own lifestyle and your own personal goals. Instead of just sitting back and telling stories about how things were so great back in the day, Sue is doing things that will just blow your mind and in a variety of events: she’s an elite sprinter, middle distance runner, and a multi-event athlete with things like High Jump and Heptathlon. Join me and Sue in Santa Barbara for this awesome conversation to learn some of her secrets and get inspired to go out there and set your own goals!

    TIMESTAMPS:

Brad Introduces this inspiring guest, a 61-year-old champion track and field athlete. Most people talk about what it was like back in the day, but this woman is still doing it. [01:14]

After nearly qualifying for the Olympics in college, she left competition for a while, but returned. [08:43]

She had a time with the pole vault as well. [11:44]

Between the ages of 32 and 50 she was doing endurance activities. [14:40]

The main reason people do Masters Track and Field is the friendly supportive atmosphere of the other participants. [19:42]

Sue has many world records, including the steeplechase. [20:26]

How does she manage the training necessary when she is the mother of three and is age 61? [21:58]

Consistency is the most important concept. [24:21]

The possibilities of recovering from stuff that usually requires surgery and debilitation are actually amazing. [33:29]

What are some of the other things she does to be the best athlete? The main thing is focusing on sleep. [38:12]

Most Americans gain a pound a year from age 25 to 65. How does Sue manage her diet? [39:49]

There is no reason to stop athletic activities as we age. [52:01]

Did Sue get nervous back when trying out for the Olympics? Now? How does she manage the mental pressure? [58:06]

  • Welcome back to another rebroadcast of a popular episode. This one dates back to 2022!What is the best way to eat? How about we go deep and sort everything out in a reasonable, thoughtful manner?

This is going to be a multi-part presentation, with part one focusing on the rationale for eating an animal based diet. This topic can get so confusing, controversial and frustrating, and this episode, I am making a great effort to get sensible and simplify things, with facts backed by respected science to help you choose the best foods and steer clear of the gimmicks, the overly restrictive diets, the dogma and the marketing hype out there that can be so confusing to us.

    TIMESTAMPS:

What is the best way to eat? Brad is presenting a sensible simplified answer. [01:01]

Buying the organic and sustainably raised foods can be less costly than a diet of common mainstream groceries. Check out the Carnivore Scores Ranking Chart. [02:29]

The vegan and plant-based movement eliminates the most nutrient-dense foods in the name of health. [08:47]

There are benefits from ketosis. The ancestors survived on it, but it wasn’t always the best. [10:47]

The first step is stepping away from the mainstream standard western diet of processed foods. [14:47]

Being average in today’s society isn’t necessarily the best. The U.S. population today is the sickest and fattest in history. [17:34]

Even the finest restaurants and stores use refined industrial seed oils! [21:35]

The highly palatable foods with a combination of sugar and fat lead to over-consumption. [26:04]

Many diets are gimmicks. You need to understand what is best for you. It’s perfectly healthy and natural to spike glucose. [33:05]

No need for cheat days, or any crappy junk food. A healthy indulgence as a treat once in a while is fine. Use the Carnivore Score Chart from Bradkearns.com as a guide. [36:25]

The process of losing excess body fat starts with getting healthy first. [39:49]

    Move more daily. [41”35]
