  • Hi friend!

Have you ever took a look around your grandmother's home and thought, 'Hmmm...that piece (what ever the piece is) is kind of cool. I wonder how I could make that work in my home? Would it be cool or fall completely flat?'Or maybe you have a hand me down sofa or a dining room credenza that you know are pretty fantastic, but want to learn how to more intentionally style it with your otherwise contemporary design but aren't quite sure how to do it. Or maybe yet, you just love thrifting and fining unique items that no one else has because you didn't find them at Target. You may have even been called eclectic a time or two. If any of these scenarios are YOU, you're in the right place because in today's episode I'm not only sharing the 7 things that make up Grand Millenial Decorating Style, but the secret to pulling it all together. And if that's not enough, I'm throwing in 6 ways you can experiment with a little more GM in your own home.

  • Hey friend!

We are continuing our 5 part mini-series getting our homes ready for the holidays. If you missed the first two parts of the series, you can listen to them here:

Part 1: Is your home ready for the holidays? Start HERE for stress-free holiday prep

Part 2: Refresh your home for the holidays with these 5 simple, budget friendly tips

In today's episode, I'm taking a cue from my business and working smarter not harder in order to prep my home for the holidays. Having a clean house is a pivotal part before welcoming guests in, but cleaning can sometimes be a bore and an absolutely chore. So today, I'm sharing how just as I batch work in my business for efficiency, we're taking that strategy to batch clean. Get ready to get more done in less time.

    The rules of batching?

    1. Start by writing down all of the chores you do in order to deep clean (remember - guest eyes only areas). Ex) dust baseboards, wash windows, pick lint out of edges of carpet :), dust flat surfaces, deep clean the toilets

    2. Then, instead of going room to room to complete one room at a time, try cleaning in like-categories. Cleaning the toilets, for example, require a different set of tools or supplies than dusting.

    3. Start by cleaning one like-category at a time. In this example, toilets. Gather all the tools and supplies you need to deep clean the toilets and do ALL the toilets before moving on to the next like-category (ie. window/glass surface cleaning)

After all areas have been deep cleaned, use this same strategy to tidy clean the week of your holiday before the guest's arrival.

  • Hey friend!

Do you wonder what's a TREND and what's NOT in home design? Do you worry that the choices you make today will be a fad and thrown by the wayside tomorrow? Do you want to make confident, timeless choices so you can be confident your design decisions will stand the test of time?

In today's episode I'm sharing 6 design elements that define the classic, timeless design style. It's not too dissimilar from Quiet Luxury, which I talked about in episode #169.

Simply put, timeless design is a "style that looks elegant and fresh over time and isn't bound to any particular trend or time period." So, what are those 6 design elements that you should include in your home if you want a home that looks timeless?

    1. Simplicity: less really is MORE

    2. Quality: less quick fabrication and MORE high quality pieces

    3. Vintage: mixing old and new

    4. Neutral Palette: this doesn't mean just 50 shades of white

    5. Natural elements: think beyond fresh plants, though a good start. Think about materials found in nature: cotton, wood, marble.

    6. Wall treatments: even homes a hundred years ago had vertical shiplap. Don't be afraid of dressing up your walls.

Are you ready to FINALLY finish your home, maybe finishing one room at a time? Book a Decorating SOS Coaching Call so you can get help making the plan or putting together the finishing touches!

  • Hi friend!

In this LIVE coaching call I'm talking with Sharon who is at the beginning stages of learning how to identify her aesthetic. Part of learning her style (or aesthetic) is identifying the color palette that she'd like to use within her home. Before our call Sharon was tasked with using Pinterest to to try to identify design elements that she's naturally drawn to. What you'll hear throughout our conversation are times when Sharon doesn't feel aligned with the beautiful pictures she identified.

The colors were too subdued, safe and over popular, but she felt that using a brighter hue of color was risky and rather 'non adult.'

She went on to identify that she'd really like to try a few things (wallpaper, printed curtains, bold color), but she feels scared.

A lot can happen in a one hour decorating coaching call. You can: * completely unveil the limitations that have been holding you back from starting * learn what next step (or steps)you can take to start moving forward with confidence* discover which items in your home are acting like a bully, pulling all of the visual attention to itself creating disharmony in your space

    * learn which design elements to include more of to create a cohesive looking flow throughout your home

    * shop side-by-side, sharing a screen so you can make confident, wise decisions that support the goals you have for your home

    * ask unlimited questions

    * finally start making change

Friend, if creating a home that you delight in is something that you've been wanting to do, but haven't gotten around to - there's no better way to get started than by booking a Decorating SOS Coaching Call so you can be a partner in the decision making without spending a fortune hiring a fancy pants designer who can cost you tens of thousands of dollars.

  • Hi friend!

Are you hosting for the holidays this year? Maybe it's your first time ever or you're an old hat, but want to be prepared ahead of time instead of playing catch up.

Or maybe...you've hesitated hosting because you don't like what your guests will be seeing once they come inside.

In this five week mini series, I'll be guiding you through your home holiday preparedness plan. Week by week we'll be focusing on a new goal for our home and with focused attention, we'll be guest ready with a clean, organized, stylish home that is fit for even the pickiest (or nosiest) of guests. Not only will you be getting your home in order, but this mini series will teach you how to decorate a table as beautiful as the food you will be spending hours preparing.

In today's episode (and the focus of this week), we are talking about decluttering. Our focus will be to declutter areas that our guests will be privy to: living room, kitchen, dining room, guest bedroom and bathrooms - as well as the pantry and refrigerator. Why declutter before the holidays? Clutter is chaos and the visual over stimulation of your visual chaos ties directly to your stress level. Removing AS MUCH STRESS as you can before hosting extra people, making extra food, engaging in sometimes interesting conversations lightens the load before the load gets heavy.

You will not be able to control the conversations at the dinner table and which side of the political line Uncle Eddie is on, but you can control your clutter.

Using the three box method this week for every room in your home where guests will have access to, will set you up for a stress free holiday.

    Three Box Method for Decluttering:

    1. Get three boxes or bags2. Label them: donate, trash and relocate (bonus: you can also have one for recycle)3. Do one guest accessible room at a time (start small to big, big to small, easy to hard, etc). 4. Choose a companion (podcast, audiobook, TV show) and let that companion be your timer

    5. Give yourself a 'carrot' or reward for each room finished. Allow yourself to complete one room/area per day.

    6. Apply the one-touch rule: you touch each item one time and place it into one of the boxes

The DONATE bag goes directly into the car for delivery. The TRASH (and RECYCLE) bag goes directly. The RELOCATE bag gets emptied out and items placed categorically for more efficient put-away.

Do you NEED or WANT help decluttering? Decorating SOS Coaching Calls are designed to help you make your space beautiful - and making your space beautiful isn't always about what you bring IN. Often times decluttering is the FIRST thing that needs to happen, but the thing that is most overlooked. So...book your Decorating SOS Coaching Call here to create a plan, have accountability and to see results in time for the holidays!

  • Hey friend! Have you ever wondered what things you should ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY AVOID when it comes to decorating your home? Well, today is your lucky day, because I'm giving you the 10 things I would NOT do when decorating my home or the homes of my clients.

Full disclosure...I started each tip with a DON'T. Don'ts are hard for me, as I am almost always a 'glass half full' kind of gal - so you'll hear me chuckling at myself midway through for being 'SO rude.'

Here they are - the 10 things NOT to do when decorating your home:

    10. Don't forget texture.

    9. Don't rely on just overhead lighting.

    8. Don't choose a paint color willy nilly.

    7. Don't forget repetition & contrast.

    6. Don't forget to think about scale.

    5. Don't choose decor and furniture because it's 'cheap.'

    4. Don't forget the windows and definitely don't let them live in high-waters.

    3. Don't let your furniture float.

    2. Don't forget to make a plan.

    1. Don't BEAT YOURSELF UP for making mistakes or not knowing how to decorate with confidence...YET. Keep listening and learning and definitely don't be afraid to reach out for help if you need it (even if it's not me you're asking for help). But...if you're READY FOR HELP, you can book your Decorating SOS Coaching Call here!

  • Hey friend! Have you seen those beautiful pictures on instagram or Pinterest - rooms that are so drenched with color that they instantly feel cozy? Have you wondered how those home owners had the nerve to go so bold and wish you had the bravery to give it a try, but think it's a trend that will pass as soon as you decide to give it a go?

Good news! Color drenching, though currently popular, is NOT A TREND! Color drenching has been around for years, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century and is a style that tends to be more classic than trendy?

Is it bold? Absolutely. It takes some boldness and bravery to make a decision to go all-in on a color. But that bravery pays off in spades. WHY?

    The benefits of color drenching:

    1. Super budget friendly

    2. Reduces the amount of prep work for painting (forget taping off the baseboards)

    3. Reduces the amount of waste (less paint brushes, paint trays, rollers)

    4. Great way to modernize a tired space (when you color drench rooms with dated paneling, brick, tile, ugly radiators, etc. it instantly elevates the room)

So...what do you say? Are you ready to give color drenching a try? Want some help, encouragement and a little guidance? Book a Decorating SOS Coaching Call!

  • Hey friend!

When Cindy reached out to me asking for help, she knew her furniture, purchased 15 years ago at Costco, wasn't going to stay. The furniture was fine, but it was tired, well loved and darker than what she wanted. With her goals of creating a light and airy, California casual, living room the camel colored leather, overstuffed, leather couches had to go.

Inspiration for her living room wasn't hard to come by - living in Southern California with a pool out the sliding glass doors, Cindy wanted to create a living room that reflected the lightness just outside those doors.

Throughout the conversation, you'll hear how we discuss scale of mirrors, art, placement of furniture, the use of a loveseat or not, ideas for replacing large wicker chairs, accommodating tall family members, round vs square coffee tables, and so much more.

Cindy had an idea of what she wanted her living room to look like, but she wanted help seeing the bigger picture and putting all the pieces into place so she wouldn't make a mistake when making those higher ticket purchases.

  • Hey friend,

At the beginning of every calendar year, I share the projected trend report for the upcoming year. But as you can imagine things change within a given year, so in today's episode I'm sharing the 2024 fall trend report. You may be equally surprised to note, that much hasn't changed since January. A few things, but not much.

According to Urban Natural and Better Homes & Gardens, these items are worth noting for your fall decorating. Items with an * indicate they were in agreement with each other with these trend predictions.

    1. Handcrafted wood furniture: the move away from quick production, cheap materials and onto more sustainable wood furniture production is still very much a thing.

    2. Mixed textures: trendy in any season, but particularly in fall when naturally we want to be cozier. Layers and texture bring in that cozy feeling we've been craving all summer.

    3. Luxurious curves: don't mistake luxurious curves for overstuffed when it comes to furniture. But even if you don't get a curved chair or couch, curves in design will directly offset the traditional structure and formality of living room pieces.

    4. *Earthy color palettes: moody earthen tones are still on trend as they evoke a feeling of calm without being overbearing or too energetic.

    5. *Artisinal elements for your dining table: fall kicks off the season of hosting dinners around a beautiful table. This season's trend is to take the table setting up a notch with beautiful handcrafted items.

Learn to set a beautiful table with this Tablescape Guide.

    6. Heirloom pieces: items passed down through generations are, rightfully so, reemerging as not only a way to honor past traditions, but to decorate while telling your family's story. Heirloom pieces don't, however, have to furniture items only. Think of smaller items - antique vases and embroidered pillowcases immediately come to mind.

    7. Natural elements: always on trend, bringing the outdoors in will never go out of style. But this season specifically, the trend comes in the form of gilded acorns, persimmon branches and pinecones.

    8. Jewel tones, naturally: continuing with the natural theme, the use of jewel tones from nature (crimson mums, magnolia leaves for example) are having their moment.

  • Hey friend! Are you ready to elevate the look of your living room? Maybe you want a quick refresh and you're wondering how to spend your money for biggest impact? In this episode, I'm concluding my mini-series: If I had $500, what would I spend it on - this time we're hanging out in the LIVING ROOM. Because every living room is different and the needs will likely be different from person to person, I'm sharing 5 things to evaluate about your room before you make plans to invest money or effort into your space.

    1. Layout: the layout of your living room matters. If all furniture items are hanging out snuggly on the edge o the wall, can you pull them in closer to create a more cozy, intentional feeling in your living room?

    2. Weight: did you know that furniture carries a visual weight to it? Dark colors, overstuffed or oversized, hidden legs with skirting, deep wood tones are all examples of characteristics of heaviness within your room. Now imagine all of those heavy items sitting side by side with each other and what you get is a very heavy corner of the room.

    3. Area rug: do you have one - or a living room that looks like the furniture is floating? Is your area rug too small or too big (that's a thing, too). Choosing the right size and knowing how to use it to your room's advantage will instantly elevate your living room while adding coziness to it.

    4. Flat surfaces: taking stock of what's on your flat surfaces (mantles, coffee tables, bookshelves, tables) and reducing visual clutter or adding intentional styling, will immediately elevate your room.

    5. Textiles: curtains, pillows and throw blankets all play an important role in finishing a room. Are the curtains long enough or missing all together? If you have a very heavy couch, using lighter colored pillows can visually lighten the visual load. Throw blankets can immediately elevate or deflate the look and appearance of the room just with the lack of texture or the appearance of pattern. Choosing intentionally creates a room that can look cohesive and elevated.

    6. Ambient lighting: if using only the overhead lighting, try adding in some ambient lighting in the form of table lamps or floor lamps. Don't be afraid of sourcing these at thrift stores to save money.

    7. Artwork: chunky frames + matting + inexpensive artwork + consistent spacing on the wall create intentionality, nuance and elevation of your living room design.

  • Hey friend!

In today's episode I'm sharing an example of my secret to creating spaces that look refined, a bit more put together - like a designer was right there doing it for you!

There is a difference between putting things on a shelf and styling decor items on a shelf / placing things on a mantle and styling items intentionally on a mantle.

Inside The Collective, my monthly membership - I teach my simple styling formula. This formula can be used to style any flat surface and could be aptly named Finishing School. :)

In today's episode I'm teaching Dee, a founding member of the membership, how to style her mantle. Dee, along with her husband Jim who helped hold the camera, were good sports as we experimented until it was just right - even good sports when the directions included, "Move that item a half inch to the left."

When it comes to styling, details like a half inch matter...A LOT!

  • Hey friend!

In today's episode I'm showcasing a perk found inside my monthly membership, The Collective. A Room Edit brings the designer's eye into your space giving you specific recommendations for elevating the room while honoring your goals and aesthetic.

You'll hear a Room Edit created for member, Susan and her den. Until this point it was an incomplete room that she never used. It lacked inspiration, didn't feel cozy and felt like an incomplete project that would take her years to complete.

You'll hear the specific recommendations (inside The Collective you'll see a video with the pictures to support what you hear on the podcast) to help her see the potential of that room.

Members inside The Collective have the ability to request a Room Edit as two will be featured monthly.

Susan took immediate action from her Room Edit - transforming her den into a room that she loves!

  • WHY IT WORKS

    Hey friend!

If you've ever wondered why some gallery walls are structured differently than others and what makes one 'work' even though it seems to not follow any of the rules, this episode is for you.

In this episode I'm sharing the two different types of gallery walls and the 'rules' to follow to create each one. I share insight into how gallery walls that look chaotic may actually be following a lot of unseen rules.

This training is an example of WHY IT WORKS a series that lives inside The Collective, my monthly home decorating membership. The doors to The Collective are open TODAY thru SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd!

    THE COLLECTIVE IS OPEN

  • Hey friend,

Pumpkin spice lattes are out, the leaves are turning colors and it's time to start thinking about pulling out your box of fall decorations to get your homes fall ready. But BEFORE you do that and BEFORE you run to Target to see what's new for the season and bring home the items you just couldn't live without, I want you to consider your feelings.

In this episode I'm sharing my two most effective gatekeepers or filters for helping me choose items intentionally for my decorating in general, but fall specifically as we are in the midst of changing seasons.

This strategy can be used for any season, any holiday or your decorating in general.

Grab a notebook and a pen because you're going to want to take notes.

  • Hey friend! Are you ready for a kitchen re-fresh? Today on the podcast we're continuing with our mini series: how to spend $500 in a single room to get the most bang for your buck!

If you missed last week, where we elevated the look of our bathroom, go back and listen to episode #269.

Remember...BIG change doesn't have to cost a lot and in today's episode I'm sharing how actually, the BIGGEST change you can make in your kitchen is actually FREE. Zero money. Zero dollars. Zilch.

So when it comes time to spend the $500, think about intentionality with the items you have living on the kitchen counters. Corraling them into functional vignettes while keeping negative space on your countertops will dramatically create an impact worth replicating.

  • Hey friend!

Have you heard the trending phrase on social media "demure and mindful?" It's popping up everywhere and even my 13 year old son has taken notice (and he doesn't have social media). So it got me wondering...what in the world is everyone talking about?

As I looked into 'demure' and what it meant versus what I thought it meant, I also noticed that there's a very similar word with quite the opposite meaning: 'demur.' If creating a home that is demure is your goal, you don't want to get the two confused. :) In today's episode I'm sharing 8 ways that your home can look and feel demure without it feeling like a pretentious museum room.

If you're wanting to create a demure look and feel in your home, you can start with these 8 things: 1. Create a calm color palette: 50 shades of white anyone? If you must have a 'pop' of color - try oatmeal or mushroom.

    2. Use light wood tones: white oak or natural immediately come to mind. Don't have that? Try a painting technique instead of throwing out your cherry entryway table.

    3. Brass or Champagne gold metals. The goal here is minimal contrast - so avoid bronze, flat matte black at all costs.

    4. Remove the chaos, the clutter, the extras...on EVERY surface. Demure homes resemble minimal homes.

    5. Quality of furniture matters, but not in a flashy way. Demure homes are quiet and respectful - not pretentious.

    6. Consider the weight of objects in your home. Demure homes are opposite of heavy - they're light and airy.

    7. The scent matters: choose subtle scents with no dominant identifiers that indicate what it is. No pumpkin spice, lavender, even vanilla. The more benign, but delicious, the better.

    8. Consider the background sound as well as the scent. Demure homes are not loud, flashy or calling attention to themselves. Turn down Alexa playing the latest Jellyroll song (not my style anyway) and opt for instrumental playing at a volume 2 - audible, but only as a faint whisper.
