  • We're back with Episode 647, and we're honored to have Duke Associate Head Coach Chris Carrawell on the show!
Duke Basketball (both the men and women) are participating in Dribble For Victory Over Cancer on October 5th, and it's a great opportunity to have C-Well on the show to discuss Duke's involvement in the event to raise money for pediatric cancer research. It's an important event, as cancer touches literally everyone...and C-Well and the team are no exception. We discuss the event and what fans who participate can expect, from dribbling around Duke to watching the open practice. We also take the time to ask Carrawell about the 2024-25 Duke team and how they've been coming along this summer. It's a great interview that you don't want to miss. And, join the DBR Podcast team either in person or through your donations! Head to tinyurl.com/DukeDribble to join us in the fight against pediatric cancer.
After reacting to the interview, Jason and Donald discuss a nugget from an interview Jon Scheyer had with Jon Rothstein where he said he was open to scheduling a home-and-home series with UConn. It leads to a greater discussion about the future of the Champions Classic and what Duke can do to continue to have a competitive non-conference schedule that excites fans every year.

  • The Duke Blue Devils were able to win on the football field over the weekend, but on Episode 646 of the Duke Basketball Roundup, we know we need to get better.
Duke was able to beat the UConn Huskies 26-21, the 3rd straight week that Duke scored 26 points. There were definitely some guys who had standout performances, but Donald and Jason know that improvement is a must as the calendar continues to move. We break down some of the things that need to improve as the Blue Devils turn their attention to this Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee.
After the break, AJ Griffin is reportedly considering stepping away from the game of basketball. We don’t know anything official yet, but we offer some encouraging words to the beloved member of The Brotherhood, no matter what he ultimately decides to do. Finally, we salute an absolute legend in the Duke community, as we discuss the passing of Dean Gerald Wilson. He served as an advisor and mentor to thousands of students over his 60 years, including Donald and Jason. They both reflect on his life of service to Duke and how he personally shaped their lives. He will be immeasurably missed.

  • On DBR Bites #60, we preview Duke’s upcoming game against UConn and we celebrate so many members of The Brotherhood coming back to campus!
First, we preview Duke’s upcoming football game against UConn this weekend. UConn is a team that struggled mightily against Maryland but turned it around against Merrimack. Donald and Jason discuss what to watch for when the two teams take the field as well as what UConn brings to the table. There are a couple of skill players to watch as well as who could be under center for the Huskies.
After the break, we get into some basketball stuff, led by a cool event that will be on campus on October 5th. Jason will be down at Duke for Dribble for Victory Over Cancer, an event that raises money for pediatric cancer research. Jason has created a DBR Podcast fundraising team, so join us to try and raise some money for a great cause!
We then get into the latest Duke Blue Planet episode, where tons of basketball alums returned to campus for one fun weekend. But, the episode has an inadvertent focus on Khaman Maluach in a really cool way, as you see how his interactions with Dereck Lively and his coaches shows how coachable he is and how quickly he learns.
Finally, friend of the pod Shane Battier has a new podcast! It’s called Glue Guys, and it’s discussing the unsung heroes of life. We definitely encourage a listen to the first episode, which just dropped yesterday!

  • On DBR Bites #59, we recap Duke’s victory over Northwestern on the edge of Lake Michigan!
Duke won 26-20 in a 2OT affair in Evanston, and there were some good and ugly parts about the whole game. Donald and Jason begin by resurrecting a fan favorite for basketball games: Headlines! We’ll be accepting them for football games as well, so don’t forget to email us at [email protected] with your headlines after each football game moving forward!
We then get into what we liked and disliked about the game, and there were some key plays on offense and defense that led to Duke’s comeback win. No matter how ugly the game felt for the first 3.9 quarters, they were able to get to overtime and then win it with some key plays from our wide receivers. We also sing praises to the defense for keeping Duke in the game with some great plays and once again getting tackles in the backfield at a tremendous clip.
After the break, the rest of the ACC had an up-and-down week, but there were some teams that had wins against P4 conference opponents that were noteworthy. The ACC needs to continue to get wins against the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12 to help the conference when it comes time for the playoff and also some of these other bowl games.

  • Duke Football is back on the field Friday night, and we preview their game against the Northwestern Wildcats on DBR Bites #58!
Northwestern is in some new temporary digs right on the edge of Lake Michigan, and that will be the stage for a Friday night game against Duke. Donald and Jason begin the preview by discussing what we will see from Northwestern’s players. They’re led by a quarterback in Mike Wright that’s a dual threat option, throwing the ball in the air and leading the Wildcats in rushing in Week 1. There are some other skill players on the offensive and defensive sides of the football that Duke will focus on, but Northwestern hopes to combine options with quick throws to move the ball down the field.
After the break, we discuss some of the things Duke needs to do well in order to win on the road, and it starts with establishing the run. Duke wants to improve on their rushing performance against Elon, as that could open up the rest of the offense. On defense, Duke will hope to contain Wright, particularly on the run, and force their offense off the field. Our offense can move the ball quickly and can tire out Northwestern’s defense. Finally, Jason and Donald predict that a pair of Duke’s experienced wideouts could have a big night and it’s one of the keys to Duke getting the win in Evanston.

  • The Manny Diaz era got off to a great start at Duke walloped the Elon in this season's opening game. The Duke Basketball Roundup gives you a complete breakdown of what happened in the contest and it all starts with the dominant defense on display from Duke. Donald and Jason both want to talk about how many times Duke stopped the Phoenix with a sack or a tackle for loss. On the offensive side of the ball, Maalik Murphy was airing it out in a way we rarely see from Duke QBs, showing off his arm strength on his way to nearly 300 yards passing.
After the break, Jason and Donald spend a bit of time on basketball. Duke Blue Planet has released its first episode of the season with a look at the Brotherhood Games, an Olympic-style competition that was dominated by CFos, K2, and Stanley Borden. There is a sentence we did not expect to write this year. The DBR Pod also dives into a bit of recruiting news as the Boozer twins were on campus this weekend. Will two of the most coveted recruits in the land pick the same school as their father or do they want to char their own path?

  • Cooper Flagg has scored what is said to be one of the biggest endorsement deals ever for a kid who has not even played a second of college basketball, signing with New Balance, a company with deep ties to his home state of Maine. On the latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup, Jason and Donald take a look at Flagg's bag (of money) and what qualities it is that make him such an attractive player.
The guys also get into the remarkable story of how Khaman Maluach ended up at Duke and how a coin flip that Duke lost plays into the decision. And, after the break, it is time for us to preview the first game of the football season as Duke takes on Elon. The Manny Diaz era is here and we are super psyched for it!

  • We’re back with a few topics on DBR Bites #57!
Jason and Donald are super excited...Bobby Hurley is returning to Duke! Duke will play a charity exhibition against Arizona State in what will be the first trip to Cameron for Hurley as a coach. They’ve known this was in the works, but now we get to finally celebrate Hurley’s return to campus.
Jason and Donald also discuss Duke Women playing a multi-team event in Vegas around the same time the men will be there. It sets up nicely for fans traveling to see both our teams play. On the other hand, the NIL tournament that is being set up in Vegas is in some serious danger due to the NCAA dropping some warnings about what is allowed and not allowed with regards to “pay for play” NIL.
After the break, Bryce Davis has flipped his football commitment from Clemson to Duke, becoming one of the most heralded recruits in Duke Football history. We discuss the ramifications of this level of recruit coming to Durham. We end with the reports that UConn could be once again trying to find a new home with the Big XII.

  • Duke has released the non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 Blue Devils and it is full of compelling and challenging matchups. The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup takes a deep dive into the sked -- not just the marquis games against teams like Kentucky and Kansas, but also what Duke faces in some of the smaller teams like George Mason and Incarnate Word.
After the break, Jason and Donald play a little draft game -- pick a team (5 starters plus a sub) from the best players of the past half-decade of Duke hoops (2020-2024). Jason's first pick may surprise you but there is sound logic behind it. However, his pick allows Donald to jump on the guy who is almost certainly the best Duke player of the past 5 years. Back and forth they go... which team do you think is best? Send us emails at DBRPodcast at gmail-dot-com with your thoughts.

  • No one knows what is happening inside Duke basketball like the coaching staff... and the Duke Basketball Roundup is thrilled to present our conversation with Jon Scheyer's top assistant, Coach Jai Lucas. Jai gives us a candid, insiders view of how the team is shaping up for the 2024-25 season including exclusive details on why Kon Knueppel is wowing everyone and what it is about Cooper Flagg that makes him different from other trop recruits. We also discuss the changing landscape of recruiting and NIL as Jai explains why Duke has not gotten any early recruiting wins thus far and the impact of the transfer portal on high school recruiting. We also hear from Coach Lucas about the roles and responsibilities of the entire coaching staff, which teams he is looking out for in the ACC next season, and we get a good story about just how competitive Jon Scheyer actually is. This is an episode of the podcast that is not to be missed so tell your friends to make sure they all have a listen. Don't forget, you can always reach out to us at DBRPodcast at gmail-dot-com and there has never been a better time to subscribe and leave a review of the best Duke hoops podcast in the land!

  • We are live with Episode 641 as we welcome Scott Rich to the show to help us navigate some interesting topics!
Jason is out on vacation, but thankfully Scott is here to take us through some topics with Duke Blue Devils Basketball. First, Duke’s experience has been a topic of conversation all summer long. But how does it rank among Duke teams from previous years? Pretty well, actually! We discuss some of the data and whether it means that Duke will be successful this season.
We also learned that Duke has another confirmed game on the non-conference schedule, as Wofford will be coming to town on November 16th. It adds to what is shaping up to be a pretty awesome schedule with some really tough tests for Duke. Scott and Donald are pretty happy with what Jon Scheyer is trying to do in scheduling some of these teams.
After the break, we switch to the gridiron, as the ACC preseason poll was released. Duke was picked to finish 11th in the conference, and we discuss whether it is a reasonable place or if Duke should get more love.
Also, Kenny Blakeney is hoping to raise some money for the Howard basketball program, and he’s doing it in an outside-the-box way: offering 1/3 of the program for $100 million. We discuss on whether he will be able to do it and what this creative idea would mean for not just the HBCUs, but also mid-major and low-major programs in college sports.
We end by congratulating Lindsey Harding and Mistie Bass-Boyd for making moves to new positions in the NBA. Harding will serve as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers under head coach JJ Redick, while Trajan Langdon has hired Bass-Boyd to the front office of the Detroit Pistons. We love that they’re getting opportunities to make their mark in the Association.

  • It's time to talk some Duke recruiting on Episode 640! On this episode, we're joined by On3's Jamie Shaw to dive into how recruiting is going for Duke this offseason and who are some of the players we hope to see in Duke Blue in 2025.
Duke has cast a wide net in recruiting this offseason, with 13 players of the Class of 2025 already receiving scholarship offers to come to Durham. Jamie gives us the players that are the primary focus at this point in time, and whether the focus is on a smaller freshman class coupled with the transfer portal or the goal is to bring in as many great freshman as we can. We also discuss how NIL may have rocketed up the importance list when trying to land the next great Duke players out of high school.
Jamie gives us some names to remember as well as how Jon Scheyer and the staff are so good at convincing the best players in the country to come to the Gothic Wonderland. It's a great interview with some excellent insight into the process and how things have changed in the era of the portal and NIL.
After the break, the date for Countdown to Craziness has been announced, and it's an early one: October 4th! We discuss our excitement at finally having the date where fans will get to see this team in person for the first time.

  • A trio of topics on this latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup. Up first is the 2024 Summer Olympics. Jason and Donald recount some of their favorite moments so far before diving into the controversy over Jayson Tatum not playing in Team USA's first game. If you are here for outrage, you will hear at least a little bit of it.
Up next, the podcast guys dive into the changes coming to NIL and especially to scholarship limits in the NCAA. This whole thing seems like a never-ending topic but the latest changes are quite significant to the future of college sports.
And after the break, Jason and Donald give their favorite moments from the latest edition of the Brotherhood Podcast featuring a remarkably revealing interview with Cooper Flagg. What Cooper says about himself and his teammates reveals a lot about the makeup of this team and how it is trying to sculpt itself into a championship club.

  • The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a look at the rankings of Bart Torvik, who plugged a whole bunch of data into his computer and asked it to give him an analytical preseason ranking of every team in college basketball. It spat out two teams at the very top of the heap, the Houston Cougars and the Duke Blue Devils. It even projects how many points per game Cooper Flagg, Khaman Maluach, and Kon Kneuppel will average next season.
But, before that look at ones and zeroes, the podcast gang has a long conversation about the wild, wild west that is the current NIL landscape. Friend of the podcast Brendan Marks has helped write an article for The Athletic that takes a deep dive into the truth and lies behind NIL and the transfer portal, with some eye-opening anecdotes. The DBR guys give you their takeaways from a revealing and troubling look at how college basketball has been fundamentally changed over the past couple years... and the changes show no signs of slowing down.

  • After some time off, we’re back with Episode 638 as we get ready for the Olympics!
The Olympics begin this week, and Jason and Donald go through all of the Duke Blue Devils who will be competing and coaching in the Summer Games. Short of ACC newcomers Stanford and Cal, Duke is sending the most athletes in the conference to Paris, which is really cool. We focus in on Khaman Maluach’s performance against the USA in a basketball exhibition where South Sudan almost had the monumental upset. Maluach showed some good things and some things to work on, and Jason and Donald break down all that he did and how it could translate to Duke.
After the break, we discuss NBA Summer League and DJ Steward absolutely balling out for the Chicago Bulls. He did so well that he earned a two-way contract for this coming season, which is really cool! He follows a line of Blue Devils who have recently found their way into the NBA via unconventional paths, like through the G League. We’re glad that Steward is getting an opportunity to play for the Bulls this season.

  • We’re back with Episode 637, where we are joined by Jon Chepkevich of Draft Express to discuss some Duke Blue Devils and their NBA prospects!
Recently, Sion James and Tyrese Proctor competed at the CP3 Elite Camp, while Kon Knueppel and Isaiah Evans attended the Jayson Tatum Elite Camp, and Chepkevich was present at both to view the athletes. We go through each of the players one by one, breaking down what they did well at the camps, what they can improve on, and their current draft prospects according to Draft Express.
Chepkevich also has seen a lot of Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach, and we take the time to go through their pros and cons. Both are expected to be high draft picks, with Flagg being #1, so it’s good to get an outside perspective about their abilities and how they could improve at Duke.
After we say goodbye to Jon, Cooper Flagg has really broken out with his stellar play at USA Basketball training camp on the USA Select Team. We review some of the footage that we saw coming out of the scrimmages, and make no mistake: we have some of the best players on the planet now saying that Cooper Flagg is the real deal.

  • After taking a short July 4th holiday break, the Duke Basketball Roundup is back with a Vegas-heavy edition of DBR Bites. Donald spent a few days perusing the casinos of the strip this week and he came back with a list of the teams the sports books love and hate for next season in college basketball. Where does Duke rank and what does Vegas think of the ACC? Have a listen to find out.
After the break, the podcast gang dives into early NBA summer league results including a former Dukie who looks like one of the best rim protectors in the entire summer league landscape. And last but not least, we have seen some short videos of Cooper Flagg playing in Vegas with the USA Basketball Select Team against the very best players in the world on Team USA. How did Cooper do when matched up with Lebron James, Jayson Tatum, Kawhi Leonard, and others? We have the answer on the latest edition of the DBR Podcast.

  • The 2024-25 Duke Blue Devils are in the gym for summer workouts, and we have some intel from one of the practices courtesy of a listener! We discuss what we learned on DBR Bites Episode 54.
Jason was able to speak to one of our listeners, who gave us some fantastic information about a practice they were allowed to watch. We go through each of the players and discuss what our listener saw from them. And there are some general insights on how the team looked and what some of the themes may be this season. One thing's for sure: we're going to learn a lot more about this team as the summer goes along!
After the break, Cooper Flagg is leaving Duke to play for another team. That team: the USA Select team, which is a group of players who help the USA Basketball team prepare for the Olympics. Cooper's the only non-pro on the team and has made the team before playing a second of college basketball. It's a huge honor and we are excited at Cooper getting able to go up against some of the best players in the world and learn from them.

  • The NBA Draft has been completed, and we discuss where Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski will begin their NBA careers on Episode 636!
The NBA Draft was a 2-day affair this year, and we had to go through both days to learn where McCain and Flip ended up. Jared McCain was drafted 16th by the Philadelphia 76ers, and Jason and Donald are really happy about what could be a great situation for him in the Association. Jared could fit in not just with his shooting and rebounding ability, but with his personality and work ethic.
We also discuss Kyle Filipowski, both on the court and off the court. He slips to the second round, eventually being drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 32nd pick. We discuss what happened pre-draft that could have caused him to slip out of the first round and be left in the green room after night 1. We also get into the stories that have come up about his current relationship and what we have heard about how it affected not just his draft stock, but his world.
After the break, there were some Duke Blue Devils that will have new places to play in the NBA due to trades during the draft. We discuss where Wendell Moore and AJ Griffin will call home now with their trades to the Detroit Pistons and the Houston Rockets, respectfully.

  • Time for part 2 of the DBR Podcast's NBA Draft preview with Jay Bilas. This time, we focus on Jared McCain, who has a great chance to be taken in the back end of the lottery after a season in which he showed he is one of the top few shooters in all of college basketball. Jason and Donald also get Jay's thoughts on the notion that the NCAA tournament will expand to add 4 or maybe 8 more teams.
And last but not least, the DBR Podcast highlights some recent stats about Duke's media exposure in football and basketball. Can you guess where Duke falls on the list of most watched teams in the ACC in the two big revenue sports? We all know football is the king of the ratings and Duke isn't exactly a huge football draw, but you may be surprised where the Blue Devils land compared to the rest of the league.
