Listen to the night...it's deafening.
JP has come back to show me a cult classic hidden in the shadow of another popular 80's vampire movie. This week we're looking at Near Dark (1987)
Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) meets a beautiful girl outside an ice-cream shop and decides to take her out for a date but when she bites him he descends into a world of nomadic creatures of the night. The rest of the pack don't trust him Jesse (Lance Henriksen) the group leader, Homer a young boy, Diamondback the group mother and Severen (Bill Paxton) a crazed killer. It's up to Caleb to prove to the group he belongs or else find a way to escape from the nomadic vampire family.
So try not to scare the horses, let instinct take over and burn it all down as we get close to Near Dark (1987)

We've all been through our rebellious phase.
Rory joins me again to relive the struggles of puberty with - Ginger Snaps (2000)
Ginger and her sister Bridget don't really fit in. They're both edge, shadowy goth girls who don't mix well with the other girls at their school and behind closed doors their mother is concerned that they're 15 & 16 but have yet to start their periods. What their mother doesn't know is that the sisters have made a pact, they'd rather die than become like everyone else....but everything changes one night when Ginger is bitten but a werewolf!

“Abashed the devil stood, and felt how awful goodness is”.
Brand new voice to the show Javier is joining us this Halloween with - The Crow (1994)
Eric Draven and his fiancé are killed on Devil's Night, a time when the crime gangs of the city band together to burn, pillage and murder. One year later Eric is risen from his grave by a crow, the ferrymen of souls, to seek revenge against those that wronged them. Seemingly invulnerable, super strong and silent Eric dawns the mask of The Crow as he hunts down his bingo book of 'dead men' - only Funboy, Skank, T-Bird and Tin Tin don't yet know they're death is coming.
So rock out to some electric guitar, send some Devil's Night greeting cards and "Fire It Up!" as we take flight with The Crow (1994)

I put a spell on you and now you're mine!
Raymond has never seen this 90's Halloween classic - Hocus Pocus (1993)
300 years ago the Sanderson sisters were hung for the crime of witchcraft, the murder of a little girl and the presumed murder of a teenage boy. Today they're the stuff of legend in the town of Salem. New in town is Max who doesn't believe the hype but he'll do anything to connect with his crush Allison, so they, along with Max's little sister Dani investigate the old Sanderson house where they unwittingly bring the witches back from the dead. Winnie (Bette Middler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) continue on their quest to suck the lives out of all the children of Salem with only Max and the gang to stop them.
So get your Halloween costume on, heed advice from black cats and don't open the book as we shake our heads in disbelief - after all "it's just a bunch of Hocus Pocus" (1993).

"The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life..."
I'm joined by two very special guests, my parents. The people who got me into horror and this week we're doing the movie I was named after - Jacob's Ladder (1990)
Jacob Singer (Tim Robins) is having a hard time keeping his life together. He's estranged from his now ex-wife Sarah, lives with his new girlfriend Jezzie and barely sees his kids. He often finds himself trapped in daydreams of his time in the Vietnam war and sees flashes of his dead son Gabe (Macaulay Culkin). But that's not all as his world becomes haunted by faceless figures that jitter in the shadows - he begins to suspect that he's become a target for the Demons of Hell.
So get your palm read, say goodnight to the kids and "Oh yeah, wait a minute Mr. Postman!" as we climb the rungs of Jacob's Ladder (1990)

There is no cure for madness.
Shawn has brought along a movie with one hell of a cast - Stonehearst Asylum (2014)
Young doctor Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) arrives at Stonehearst Asylum to learn the ways of a 19th century Alienist under the tutelage of Dr Lamb (Ben Kingsley). But it isn't long until he begins to realize that things at the Asylum have gone horribly wrong. One of the patients Eliza (Kate Beckinsale) warns him that they've recently come under new management and this is compounded as Edward discovers the staff including Dr. Salt (Michael Caine) - the previous head Doctor - locked in cells beneath the institute. It's a race against time as functionality begins to crumble while Edward does his best to not arouse suspicion and keeps things ticking along.
So be careful who you touch, be sure to use your eyes and keep strong in a battle of wills as we're admitted to Stonehearst Asylum (2014)

You know you don't have to listen to the voices in your head.
After our last heavy-hitting movie Pip and I decided to do something a little more fun - The Voices (2014)
Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) hears voices....namely coming from Bosco his dog and Mr. Whiskers his cat. But he deals with it because when he does take his medication the world is grey and uninviting. At work he falls in love with Fiona, a British woman in accounting and cannot see that Lisa (Anna Kendrick) definitely has a thing for him. It's a comedy of a love-triangle that's all fun and games until someone trips and gets accidently stabbed over and over again.
So never forget to feed your pets, make some room in the fridge and sing yourself a happy song as we try to ignore all The Voices (2014)

Together with David, Mark and Kay they set out into the Amazon to find the rest of the remains and determine if this is the missing link. They're soon told of a lagoon nearby where the rest of the rocks may have been carried and so they go off to explore...but what if the creature they thought long since dead was watching them from beneath the murky waters?
So don't argue with the Captain, grab a pair of aqualungs and hide the women inside as we hunt for the Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954)

It could be literally anyone!
We're back with arguably one of the last quintessential slasher movies. Thank you Kat - Scream (1996)
One year after her Mother's death Sydney (Neve Campbell) is still struggling to come to terms with what happened and the crazed killer who now sits on trial. Meanwhile a new series of killings have just begun. Casey (Drew Barrymore) and her boyfriend are killed one night. Police are on the case but the suspects are too numerous and as more time passes, more bodies hit the floor. It could be any of the kids. It could be the rookie Deputy Dewey (David Arquette). It could the hungry for fame reporter Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox). Only time will tell as we solve the mystery...or at least try to survive the weekend.
So remember the rules of horror movies, ignore the ringing phone and don't trust anyone as we let out one last blood curdling Scream (1996)

When you wish upon a....dismembered shrunken monkey's paw.
JP and I delve into the retelling of the classic tale 'be careful what you wish for' with - The Monkey's Paw (2013)
Jake is a bit of a screw up at work, along with his friend Cobb (Stephen Lang). After one too many mistakes it's in fact their boss who gets fired, not them. They strive to make things right and apologize to their ex-boss who says there's no hard feelings, in fact they have a gift. Jake is granted a monkey's paw and told that it has the power to make any man's dreams come true...but as always, you should be careful what you wish for.
So make nice with the waitress at the bar, take your new car for a joyride and borrow a gun from your best mate as we wish upon The Monkey's Paw (2013)

Sometimes what we need is the company of your best friend.
Lu has recommended a thrilling movie with minimal dialogue in - No One Will Save You (2023)
Brynn lives at the outskirts of town, it takes a lot of prep and willpower to travel to the inner circle where people roam. Everyone there seems to have it out for her with Brynn receiving abusive calls, whispered glances and cold shoulders but she herself keeps busy with a myriad of hobbies. Strange patches of dead grass are appearing in her front lawn but things begin to get really out of hand when a stranger comes knocking in the dead of night.
So practice your dance moves, sew yourself a pretty dress and keep your mouth shut tight as we realize that No One Will Save You (2023)

Jess D and I are back again with an almost classic slasher - Jeepers Creepers (2001)
On their way home from college Darry (Justin Long) and his sister Trish are almost run off the road by a crazed van driver. They don't really think much of it until later when they see the driver dumping suspiciously wrapped packages down the rusted pipe of an abandoned building. While investigating they discover something more harrowing than they could have imaged and now the killer is after them as well, chasing them up the highway where no help seems to come.

Presented as a fairytale we follow Jean and Jeanne as they struggle to make their love endure. They wish to wed but the Lord of the kingdom demands payment for permission. Cruel and unforgiving, Jeanne is left scarred and not even the love of Jean can make this right so she turns to a voice which promises her everything she desires and more.

This week we're indulging in a ghost story as Dylan shows me - The Innkeepers (2011)
The Yankee Peddler is soon going out of business. The upper floors are already cleared out and they're down to a staff of two. Luke and Claire have found ways to entertain themselves though. They're on the hunt for the ghost of Madeline O'Malley who supposedly died in the hotel in a fit of passion and despair. You might say that some things are better left buried in the basement.
