  • We are very lucky to welcome this week's guest, Marty Wheeler! In this week's episode, we have an in-depth conversation about the Nashville Music publishing industry. Music publishing can be very complicated, and Marty helps us navigate all the different ways musicians can utilize publishing to enhance their careers.

    Marty is a seasoned executive in the music industry with over 30 years of experience, holding a BBA in Music Business from Belmont University. As Vice President of Music Publishing at renowned companies such as EMI, Universal Music, BMG, Zomba Music's Brentwood-Benson Music, and McSpadden-Smith Music, he has signed over 200 artists and songwriters and managed the launch of numerous joint ventures and independent publishing companies across country, rock/pop, and Christian music genres.

    In 2008, Marty founded his own company and passed the Series 7 stockbroker exam with the Securities Exchange Commission to establish a fund for catalog acquisitions. This endeavor led him to broker numerous multi-million dollar catalog transactions and consult for entertainment companies, including Legendary Pictures, Big Tractor, Murrah Music, and many others.

    Marty has been an adjunct professor at Belmont University for over 24 years, teaching music publishing and earning multiple nominations for the Chaney Distinguished Professor Award and the Presidential Faculty Achievement Award.

    Marty serves as the Senior Regional Director for Samaritan's Purse, overseeing eight regional directors. He continues to teach at Belmont and co-owns Fort Noxx Music Publishing Group, where he sits on the board of directors and focuses on music IP-related catalog acquisitions.

  • This week's episode features Dr. Matt Endres of the UW Madison!

    Dr. Endres accepted a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin in 2017. Here he acts as professor of drum set, jazz history, and is the drumline coordinator for the UW Marching Band.

    Dr. Endres received his Bachelor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, his Masters of Music at the University of Illinois, and his Doctorate of Music and Ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois.

    Dr. Endres has been adjudicating music festivals and competitions extensively throughout the United States over the last decade. He has performed as a sideman and band leader in national and international venues.   • Garrett Breeze is a Nashville-based composer best known for his catalog of more than 1,500 choral arrangements of popular music, including more than 1,000 written for competitive show choir.     Jillian works for Musicnotes as our Content and Production Assistant. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Music Composition and Film Scoring, and a certification in Music Technology and Production.

    Born and raised in Colorado, Jillian has been performing and writing music since elementary school. She has received three DownBeat awards for vocal Jazz performance and has earned opportunities to perform with several notable musicians, including Sarah Brightman (of Phantom of the Opera) and Larry Braggs (of Tower of Power).

    Now having moved to Nashville, she continues to pursue her passions of teaching, composing, and performing music!
