Busy with the affairs of my Father: The final epsiode of Luke's story of Jesus' infancy is the only place where Jesus speaks. His parents' concerns over his loss are challenged by his response that he must now be in the house of his Father, and about the affairs of his Father. The story of Jesus' ministry can now begin. Mary treasures all these things in her heart, waiting and accepting God's design for her family and her Son.

The Word became Flesh: The Prologue to the Gospel of John is among the most profound passages in the Bible. It tells of the pre-existent union of love between God and the Word, the Word's saving gifts of light and life, and our ambiguous response. But the Word is Jesus Christ who dwelt among us, showing us the wonderful presence of God's saving truth. Those who accept that truth become children of God.

Swaddling cloths and a manger on the road: Luke's account of a birth of Jesus, as with the appearance of John the Baptist, is fixed in a given time and place. But it is surrounded by the symbols of swaddling cloths, only used for a king, a manger, from which Israel should be nourished, recognition by the simplest of people, the Shepherds, and the heavenly proclamation of God's glory. Jesus is born on a journey, for a journey.

What must we do?: Continuing his ministry of preparation for the Lord, John the Baptist instructs the people, the tax-collectors, and the soldiers, that they are to do justly what they have always done. However, a new era is coming that will be marked by the inspirational presence of the Spirit, and the fiery division of good and bad.

The two advents of Jesus: The first Sunday of Advent does not focus upon the coming of Jesus at Christmas time, but on the final coming of Jesus at the end of all time. This Gospel reading catches a central element of the Advent Season: the two comings of Christ, and the need to live well the in-between-time.

I am a King: The final Sunday of Year B is dedicated to Jesus' universal kingship. As we have seen throughout our reflections on the Gospel of Mark, Jesus lays no claim to be a king who exercises worldly power. On trial for his life in the Gospel of John, he tells Pontius Pilate that he has come with a royal message. God loves us without condition. Those who belong to his kingdom are drawn into that love.

My words will not pass away: We hear words from the Jesus of the Gospel of Mark for the last time in Year B. Writing to Christians who thought that the end was near, he insists that before that happens, the Gospel must be preached to the ends of the earth. But the end will come. We must be able to read the signs of the times, not knowing when it will take place, but certain that it will take place.

She has given her whole life: Following Jesus' encounter with a Scribe who accepts the centrality of the love commandment, Jesus attacks "the scribes" who pretend to be religious, but harm the poor of this world. One of the latter, a widow, shows the way of true discipleship. She gives her all, her very life.

The first of all the commandments: On arrival in Jerusalem, Jesus meets opposition. These passages are not in the Lectionary, but they lead to Jesus' encounter with a Scribe. Acting as a lawyer, he seeks the one commandment that covers all the commandments. Jesus' response comes from Israel's tradition, but it is a new commandment as the love of God and love of neighbour are combined. Finally, a Jewish leader accepts Jesus' teaching, and is not far from the Kingdom.

Not to be served, but to serve: James and John, and the other ten members of "the Twelve" continue to misunderstand Jesus. They seek only places of honour and authority. Jesus calls them to the baptism of martydom, and to lowly service. He instructs them not only in word, but by his example: the Son of Man who came to serve, and to give his life.

What must I do?: A rich man's desire to know what he must do to inherit eternal life leads Jesus to love him and focus upon the only thing that is blocking his commitment to the way of Jesus - his riches. Once more, this episode is to teach disciples that they are to follow Jesus in all things, abandoning anything that might stand between them and the man they wish to follow.

From the beginning of creation: Tested by the Pharisees on his interpretation of divorce, approved by Jewish Law under certain conditions, Jesus abandons Law, and describes how God planned the relationship between a woman and a man "from the beginning" before sin had entered the world. Jesus continues to instruct his disciples about the challenge to serve and be reception "in practice" and not just "in theory."

To be for or against Jesus: The disciples continue to misunderstand their call to follow Jesus, as they tried to stop someone who was not following them. Serving and receiving: Continuing his journey to Jerusalem, Jesus announces his forthcoming death and resurrection a second time. Again the disciples do not understand, and wonder about who will be the greatest in Jesus' messianic victory. Who do you say that I am?: At the centre of Mark's Gospel, and after his recognition by the Gentiles, Jesus asks his disciples who they think he is. Peter's response, "You are the Christ" is only partially correct. Jesus is also the suffering, crucified, and risen Son of Man. Anyone who wishes to be his disciple must follow him to the cross, and through the cross into life.

A missionary journey into Gentile lands: Jesus sets out on a mission to Gentile lands. After healing the daughter of a Gentile woman, he journeys north and then east, always walking among Gentiles. On the Gentile side of the Lake of Galilee he heals a Gentile deaf-mute, and the Gentiles acclaim that he does all things well, and see him as the Messiah. Only on mission, among the Gentiles, is Jesus recognised and acknowledged.

Observing human traditions: After four Sundays reflecting upon John 6, the Lectionary returns to the Gospel of Mark, but maintains its focus upon "eating." The leaders of Israel try to accuse Jesus and his disciples of unfaithfulness to their religious traditions. Jesus instructs them - and us - that we must live by the commandments of God, and not closed religious traditions. What lies deep within us makes us clean or unclean.
