A new Sinister Selection crash-lands on the scene and vows to dispense cosmic justice…just very slowly and on a budget. In 1987’s Alien Private Eye, Earth is threatened by an odd combination of narcotics and nuclear weapons. Our only hope is Lemro, a super-cool alien who lives among us as a private detective. Aided by a mysterious woman and a pair of rival space cops, Lemro searches for the two halves of a powerful alien artifact. One half is currently in the possession of the villainous Kilgore, who’s using it manufacturer a potent (and very confusing) drug called “soma.” We’re not sure how Lemro intends to solve this case, but it’ll definitely involve dancing, fighting, and a Nintendo Power Glove. Find the windiest spot in your apartment, get plenty of refreshments for your henchmen, and listen to today’s out-of-this-world episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake! (Warning: It’s only safe to listen to this episode anywhere from 5 to 99 times.)

All voyages must come to an end, and tonight on Anime Was (Not) A Mistake we take the next steps into the future with the Season 1 of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Frieren, Fern, and the rest of the intrepid mages continue on their path towards first class magedom. What lies before them is a labyrinth filled to the brim with unfeeling clones and even worse than that a one-on-one interview with Serie herself. Frieren will need to rely on all her spell craft, knowledge and maybe even the friends she has made along the way to achieve what she sets out to do. I would say a long, heartfelt goodbye, but it would be embarrassing when we meet again.

Rev your engines and be prepared to toot your sweets, Anime Was (Not) A Mistakes' 2024 Holiday Special continues this madcap race with the seminal fleet-footed fender lined film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). When the inventor Caracticus Potts, is commissioned to save a beat-up car from the scrap heap, a magical musical adventure is set into motion. We have a film full of bops, barons, and a little bit of the ol' bamboo. Beware the child catcher even with his delicious false promises of Heinz Treacle. Buckle up listeners. Will this one be truly scrumptious or more of a shitty-shitty boom boom? Trust us, it was funny in the moment.

Ghost and Ghoulies everywhere come to Anime Was (Not) A Mistake for a Yuletide scare?!? That's right, this year's first half of our Holiday Special is devoted to the stop-motion animation classic The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). Join your normal hosts Daniel and Jonathan as they tromp through the pumpkin patch...but what's this? Three crafty trick or treaters have stumbled upon the podcast as well! Gabe, Heather, and Grant are deadest upon kidnapping the Sandy Claws. Listen as this group of spooky spectators offer commentary on our favorite holidays, our united hatred of strange fog's breath smelling doctors, and our admiration for what might just be one of the greatest animated movies of all time. No matter the season, nor holiday, all one needs is the spirit of friendship and maybe some candy to fend off an evil bag of bugs.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, continues once more on Anime Was (Not) A Mistake with the departing of one character and the introduction of man, many more. Stark is given a reprieve as Frieren and Fern are tasked with proving their magical might in a series of tasks. When split into groups, surrounded by talented, unique mages, and challenged in catching a crafty bird, where will the chips fall for our magical girls. Remember this lesson above all else magic relies on the limits of imagination, if you can perceive it, it can be done. I really hope Dan is enjoying that jumbo-berry sundae...

Our journey through realms inspired by tabletop RPGs continues with another Delicious in Dungeon and Record of Lodoss War combo episode. In the Mad Mage’s Dungeon, Laios and his party must traverse the watery Fourth Level while learning a few (harsh) lessons from the dungeon’s ecosystem. Then, a surprise encounter with an Undine leaves Marcille drained of her mana. With the help of an old teammate, the party will have to craft an energizing brew if they want their mage to continue. On the island of Lodoss, the arrival of King Kashue in Valis gives Parn the inspiration he needs to become a great knight. While the party gets to enjoy a few fleeting moments of peace, Karla the Grey Witch continues to scheme in the shadows. Emperor Beld begins his destructive advance into Valis, with King Fahn standing ready to face his old nemesis in battle. Make sure to pack plenty of Kelpie liver and a set of loaded dice for today’s iron-rich installment of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake!

Our journey continues once more with Frieren: Beyond Journey's End on Anime Was (Not) A Mistake. On this casual batch of four episodes we may get a new priestly party member that's on a voyage of his own for his "Gorilla Warrior." With some liturgical magic, perhaps the party will take down a Refelga infused plant monster, participate in a ball, and help out a stubborn old woman in polishing her statues. It may seem like a subtle bunch of morals lie in store. Ten Years aren't as long as they seem. You can try to replace family. Those with an itchy butt wake up with smelly hands... this and much, much more on tonight's episode.

Its getting a bit chilly on this week's Anime Was (Not) A Mistake with a frosty double feature. With a return to form with some anime, first we have Cooler's Revenge (1991). Goku, Gohan, and the gang are just getting some well-deserved rest when Earth is threated once again by Frieza's evil brother Cooler. Hope that you have packed some extra senzu beans because if our intrepid Z Heros survive we all have to go a second round with The Return of Cooler (1992). With Cooler seemingly revitalized and done up in chrome New Namek has to face an onslaught of robot tyrants and copies of Cooler. Come see some character design that really fills Daniel's ice tray and some rocking music that takes us back to the picturesque 90s. You better have your Dragon Balls at the ready.

Fans of cobwebs and candelabras rejoice as our Halloween Spooktacular takes an ill-advised trip to Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak! Since the day she lost her mother as a child, Edith Cushing has been able to see and speak with ghosts. While Edith is determined to channel this gift into her writing, fate has other plans. After a brief (and tragic) courtship, Edith is whisked away by Sir Thomas Sharpe to his mansion in England. Thomas’ sister Lucille Sharpe lives there as well, and she seems to deeply resent her new sister-in-law. Edith soon realizes that the three of them are not the mansion’s only occupants; numerous tortured spirits appear and attempt to communicate something to her. Will Edith be able to decipher their warnings before it’s too late? Please remember to drink your tea while enjoying this peak episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake! (recorded entirely on wax cylinders)

Whatever they offer you don't feed the plants! On this episode of Anime Was (Not) a Mistake's first ever Spooktacular we are dealing with an alien invasion right in the heart of New York City! We are all in full bloom tonight, especially Jon, he had little bit too much of that Miracle Grow. Run and flee in terror with the classic, 80s, horror, musical Little Shop of Horrors (1986). Dan and I have also managed to snag a few guests while we were in route to the Dentist's office. We can't wait for them to join us in having some fun now... I know Daniel is the greatest but, he's recording with a Sem-alcoholic... Hopefully, even with all that is against us we can make it out of Skid Row and arrive somewhere that's green!

Our Halloween Spooktacular continues with 2001’s Thir13en Ghosts. While still mourning the untimely death of his wife, Arthur Kriticos is informed that his estranged uncle Cyrus has passed away as well. Arthur takes his family to see the mansion that Cyrus left for them, but his late uncle’s house is far from ordinary. An avid ghost hunter until his supposed death, Cyrus had turned his home into a glass labyrinth designed specifically for imprisoning spirits. With Arthur and his family trapped inside, the mansion’s infernal machinery activates. 12 ghosts are set loose within the house, free to rampage until Cyrus’ strange ritual is complete. The blueprints for the machine also mention a thirteenth ghost, one that can either bring the house down entirely…or give Cyrus exactly what he wants. Be sure to put on your spectral glasses and get that scooter off the floor for today’s recently-deceased episode of Anime Was Not A Mistake!

A chill runs down your spine. Your blood runs cold. You feel something behind you, watching. You slowly turn your head and see….A BIG PLASTIC PUMPKIN! That can only mean that our fated Halloween Spooktacular has officially begun! We have six horror movie favorites coming your way, starting with John Carpenter’s mind-bending In the Mouth of Madness. The film follows John Trent, an insurance claims investigator, on an assignment to find the final manuscript of Sutter Cane. Cane is a prolific horror author whose works are rumored to drive people to madness. Trent’s search leads him to the town of Hobb’s End, which has seemingly popped up out of nowhere to match the setting of Cane’s books. All sorts of supernatural horrors spread out from the church wherein Sutter Cane does his writing. Is there a logical explanation for all of this? Or is reality truly becoming stranger than fiction? Find out today on this page-turning episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake!

Feel that rumbling and rolling, as Sinister Six continues with a Jurassic journey. When all you have is a quickly written script, a dream and an animatronic T- Rex you have to make a movie. Tammy and the T-Rex (1994) gives us a romance for the ages, starring Denise Richards and Paul Walker in their film debuts. With crazy bullies, a mad scientist, big jungle cats, and plenty of gore, will this one finally provide the extinction of Dan Ryan? All Jonathan can do is promise this film will be Dino-myte!!! Dan why are you giving me that look?

The latest installment of Sinister Six warps down to Earth as we suffer through 1992’s Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe. Jesse “The Body” Ventura plays the titular intergalactic cop, who chases the evil Secundus across the stars to New York or Canada or Minnesota. Secundus has returned to our world to find his genetically-engineered son Tommy, who he hopes will enable him to solve the Anti-Life Equation (not the one from the Snyder Cut) and gain absolute power. Abraxas and Sonia, Tommy’s mother, quickly form a connection as they fight to foil Secundus’ plan (which involves repeatedly pushing people aside and stealing their cars). Like any good 90’s B-movie, it all builds to an epic confrontation in an abandoned factory. Abraxas and Secundus will do battle once more to decide the fate of the universe or Canada or New York or Minnesota, we don’t know. Make sure you iron your jeans and pack plenty of PEPSI products for today’s vaulted/faulted/balded episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake!

We're proud to unveil the first installment of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake: Midnight Run! In this Toonami-centric format, we take to the stars to enjoy a few anime classics from that beloved programming block. The first series to be showcased are none other than The Big O and Outlaw Star, which you may (hopefully) remember from our Pizza Party Preview event. In The Big O, Roger the Negotiator solves mysteries and fights titanic threats alongside the titular Megadeus. The Big O is not the only mechanical marvel hidden within Paradigm City, which experience a mass amnesia event 40 years before the present day. In Outlaw Star, Gene Starwind and his friends take flight to find the Galactic Leyline and the treasure hidden there. Such a quest requires an extraordinary starship, one that Pirates and Outlaws alike are ready to kill for. Remember to secure your electric eels and ready a few paintballs for today's extra-nostalgic episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake!
