  • In this episode, we’re immersing ourselves in the spirited tradition of holiday beers with a lively discussion on the necessity and culture of pre-holiday brews. Inspired by the recent collaboration between package holiday provider On The Beach and Seven Brothers Brewing, we pair their beer, Breakfast Brew with breakfast sandwiches – are they actually the perfect pairing?

As well as investigating people’s attitudes towards airport beers, we also discuss our top drinking moments – do yours match ours or those of the article, which you can find below:

  • It’s been a while since we’ve talked exclusively about non-alcoholic beer options. With Guinness 0 making such an impact recently, we thought it was time to give you a bit more insight into non-alcoholic stouts, exploring both the opportunities and challenges faced by big brewers and small craft beer producers alike. Larger companies like Guinness have harnessed their resources to master the art of creating non-alcoholic versions of their classic recipes, while smaller brewers continue to innovate despite financial constraints.

We'll take you through the sensory experience of tasting alcohol-free beers, breaking down the nuances in flavour, mouthfeel, and mouth-watering potential. Examining everything from the technology behind 0% ABV brewing, to a fun taste test of a cinnamon bun verses cinnamon and coffee stout from Mash Gang, our discussion covers the growing demand for health-conscious alternatives and the importance of consistent quality in craft beer venues.

We also delve into intriguing collaborations, such as a chocolate stout from Northern Monk partnering with Leeds-based Get Baked, analysing how ingredients like lactose can impact taste and accessibility. Whether you’re curious about how non-alcoholic stouts stack up to their full-strength counterparts, or looking for the next great alcohol-free drink, we've got recommendations and insights to share.

Would you drink a 0% Guinness, or would you rather just have a soda? Let us know!

  • We know you love hearing us chat, so this week we bring back the topic jar and answer some burning questions.

Would you rather go to a consistent brewery with only a limited amount of styles or a brewery with more styles but their quality could be hit or miss?

What do you do if someone wants to go to Spoons or Brewdog?

What are your craft beer red flags – this was a great one and we’ve put the question back in the jar to come up with amber and green flags next time!

Have you got questions for us to add to the jar? Let us know and we’ll pop it in!

  • This week we dive into the intricate world of Gueuze—a complex and traditional Belgian beer. We'll cover everything from the meticulous cork removal process to the distinct appearances, aromas, and flavours of their chosen versions. Together, they compare the carbonation, foam, and colour of their drinks, and explore the layers of tartness, dryness, and fruity funk that make these beers so unique.

We will also take you through the fascinating history of Gueuze, the specific serving temperatures, and the traditional glassware that enhance the drinking experience. You'll hear about their adventures finding Lambic baskets, the artistry behind the brewing process, and the fascinating revival of traditional beer styles in Belgium.

    In this episode we drank

    Oude Geuze from Boon

Cuvee Rene Oude Gueuze by Lindemans

  • We are showcasing one of Jo’s fave beer styles for this edition of our lager series – Vienna lager. In fact, it’s the style that got her into beer! Tori’s more of a Marzen fan, but each to their own.

Looking at the history of Vienna lager, we meet our old friends Anton Dreher and Gabriel Sadlmayer (those thieving brewers with their walking sticks), find out who brews better – head brewers or ghosts, and how the best versions of beers may be picked by our feline friends.

We found two great examples of the Vienna lager style from home and abroad:

Elements #12 Vienna lager from Wild Horse in Wales

Chungdamdong Myuhnuri by Artmonster Brewery in Korea

This can be a difficult style to find, but if you do let us know where you got it!

We also give thanks to our robots overlords and ask Chat GTP to create us beer cocktail versions of an Amaretto Sour. Tori tries an addition of a wheat beer and Jo adds a citrusy pale ale – but does it work?

    Beers we tried:

The Way To Amaretto by Brew York x Unbarred

Death by Amaretto Sour by Vocation

  • Said in very British voice: ‘where has that time gone?!’ We are already half way through the year and checking in on our 2024 beer goals.

We both think we’ve done alright so far, Tori is working on hard mode (obvs) while Jo is reviewing and refining her goals – mid year is the best time for this! We also look at how far we’ve got with our Drink Harder challenge and, once again, debate what constitutes a dive bar!

Tori lets us in on her data collection for the year so far and Jo shares the beginnings of her beer journal. We’ll also see which were the top episodes of the quarter.

Alongside giving you tasting notes, we navigate the fascinating history and marketing strategies that have propelled these beverages into the hearts and hands of many… if not those of us craft beer lovers! Tori grabbed us a Miller Lite while she was in the US, so we can give you our honest insights into the typical example of this style. We then compare this to craft and non alcoholic versions brewed here in the UK.

    We drink:

  • This week, we're diving into the challenges and opportunities for women in the beer industry and community with the thought-provoking findings from The Gender Pint Gap: Revisited report by Dea Latis. Using the report as a starting point, we'll explore the ten challenges and nine opportunities it highlights, addressing critical aspects such as the need for gender-neutral marketing, inclusive spaces, and better representation in mainstream advertising.

We'll share personal anecdotes and our thoughts on the opportunities outlined in the report, like promoting premium beer, emphasizing taste over price, and introducing low or no-alcohol options. Additionally, we'll touch on how these changes can cater to different age groups and demographics while creating education and career opportunities in the industry.

We discuss the societal norms and constraints that influence women's attitudes toward beer, the physical and psychological impacts they face, and the necessity for businesses to make ground-level changes to support inclusivity.

This is such an important piece of research and we give a huge thanks to Annabel Smith and Dea Latis for taking it on.

  • Our lager series continues this week with the lesser known Dortmunder Export. We have examples from Lost & Grounded, Exhale and Culmination Brewing and take you through what you should expect from this classic style.

We won't just stop with the tasting notes, though. We’ll also be your guides through the optimal glassware and serving temperatures to ensure you get the best out of each pour and possible food pairing options. We trace the historical roots of the DAB Brewery, unfolding its journey through the technological revolution of refrigeration in the late 19th century, its resilience post-World War II, and its eventual mergers with prominent brewing groups. We'll delve into how Dortmunder Export became a significant component of German beer sales and the intriguing sulfuric notes that define this beer style.

As is our way, we take a few detours during this episode – look out for talk about Bristol, St Patricks Day and international supermarkets!

    We drank:

Newstalgic 7 from Lost & Grounded

    Zorc from Exhale

    Dork from Culmination Brewing

  • Here at A Woman’s Brew, it’s always Pumpkin Spice season! We missed our pumpkin episode last autumn, but we have finally got round to trying our selection of pumpkin spiced beers for you now.

From the aroma reminiscent of freshly roasted coffee with a hint of warming spices, to the unexpected flavour profiles that these unique beers deliver, we'll leave no pumpkin unexplored. As we savour each sip, we'll share our thoughts, preferences, and memories, from childhood pumpkin carving experiences to our university days of culinary exploration.

Join us as we recount the origins of our pumpkin fascination, debate the authenticity of whimsically named pumpkin varieties in our fun "Real or Fake" game, and explore the history and versatility of pumpkins in both food and beer. We'll also take a nostalgic detour to discuss our experiences with pumpkin spice items like pop tarts and lattes, and reflect on the influences of our diverse family cuisines.

What was your favourite pumpkin spice beer? Let us know!

  • How do you feel about beer flights? Here at A Woman’s Brew both Tori and Jo are big advocates for beer flights - both for beer choices, pour size and beer education. But there is a debate going on as to whether a beer flight works for breweries and taprooms – does it slow down service? Not give the best representation of the beer? Or maybe there isn’t enough space for glass storage?

We look through two articles and decide if we agree with the opinions, of if we are still pro-flight.

What are your thoughts on beer flights? Are you for or against?

  • Back by popular demand (if you don’t listen to Tori!), Rik joins Tori to talk about their recent Belgian excursion to the Toer De Geuze where tradition meets the bubbling excitement of craft brewing. They embraced the unique opportunity to peek behind the curtains of some of Belgium's most revered Lambic breweries and blenders.

But! Navigating this event, that only happens every two years, can be a bit challenging. They share their top tips for planning and budgeting for the trip and how to find your way to the event hosted by Horal – The High Council for Artisanal Lambic Beers.

Tori and Rik visited Tilquin, Lambiek Fabriek, Kestemont and De Cam, each having their own unique attributes and activities for the day.

Has this inspired you to plan a trip for the next Toer De Geuze or do you have other tips to help travellers to the Pajottenland? Let us know!
