  • This episode strays away from our usual path of interviews with oncologists and health experts. Today, we’re going into the world of crime and consequence.

I'm honored to be joined by Kate Moore, the brilliant mind behind "The Radium Girls." This book, a personal favorite of mine, not only captivated me but also disturbed me to the core.

Today's conversation isn't about your typical crime drama. It's about a crime that unfolded silently, hidden within the glow of radium, a substance once celebrated for its luminescent properties. But beneath its shimmering allure lies a dark truth—a truth that Kate's book fearlessly confronts.

In an era where crime stories dominate our screens and shelves, we often forget the crimes silently committed against our health and environment. The story of the Radium Girls falls precisely into this category—a tale of betrayal, injustice, and the insidious impact of unchecked industrial practices.

Join us as we discuss all of the unsettling details of this cancer crime story. Kate Moore, hailing from the UK, brings her expertise and passion to our conversation, guiding us through this haunting narrative.

  • This is a topic I don’t know much about, so I was looking forward to interviewing Cancer Prevention Coach and nurse, Krista.

Krista’s focus is on genetic testing because she’s tested positive for a strong breast cancer gene, and she believes it’s the same gene that caused her mother’s breast cancer.

I’ve always wondered: if a close relative had cancer does that mean I will get it too? What can you do to prevent cancer if it’s a big part of your family history? How “close” does the relative with cancer have to be to increase your own risk? Are there tests that you can take to see if you have strong cancer genes?

Krista answered all these questions and so many more.

This is a tough topic, and I’ll be honest a little scary when you think about getting tested to see if you have a higher likelihood of cancer. But Krista is very clear that knowledge is power, and it’s better to understand the risks in your genetics so you can take action to lower your risk.

We had an enlightening conversation about stress and its link to cancer. We are both in agreement that organic is best when it comes to produce, but we also understand that it can also be very expensive. We discussed some unique ways to eat organic produce (she suggests eating 8-10 servings per day) without blowing your food budget.

Krista, BSN, RN, combines her diverse training in traditional medicine, integrative oncology, and functional nutrition to her work with patients at high risk of cancer due to inherited genetic mutations and/or family history. She is currently finishing her Master’s degree at Arizona state University as part of the first Medical Nutrition program in the country. Her focus is nutrigenomics and personalized cancer prevention. She has training through Harvard Medical School in cancer genomics, precision oncology, and immuno-oncology. Krista truly believes knowledge is power, and considers herself a life-long learner.

Her passion for prevention began amidst her mother’s 12+ year battle with breast cancer which was caused by a genetic mutation. Krista, who is also a carrier of this mutation, has since dedicated her career to educating herself about cancer and showing others how to decrease risk as much as possible. She wants others to understand that genetics is just a small piece of the puzzle, and that their DNA is not their destiny.

She owns a private nutrition practice in which she works closely with patients to create individualized prevention plans, and offers various courses throughout the year. Her goal is to empower patients with integrative nutrition and lifestyle modifications and teach them how to “fill their plates, and their lives, with purpose.”

To learn more about upcoming classes Krista will be offering, you can follow her on Instagram (@cancer.prevention.coach)

  • Conversations about health and healing often go above and beyond conventional medical treatments. Many holistic methods have been employed to supplement traditional treatment protocols and I had the privilege to talk with Liz Curran, co-director of the Radical Remission Project, about this very topic.

Witnessing her sister's battle with aggressive breast cancer ignited Liz’s passion to empower individuals in their healing. As a Certified Radical Remission health coach, educator, and speaker, Liz bridges the gap between conventional medicine and holistic approaches

Our discussion was enlightening and deeply inspiring, as we talked about the impact laughter can have on healing. Often underestimated, laughter is a potent tool against illness. Its ability to uplift spirits, alleviate stress, and even enhance the efficacy of medical treatments highlights its significance in holistic wellness.

Today, discover the unconventional approaches Liz uses to help pave the way for healing and restoration.

  • Dr. Amanda Tieu states, "Acupuncture has little to no risk and helps with pain, stress, and inflammation."

She's seen many success stories, from helping couples with infertility to injured veterans who've tried everything for pain. In the case of Dr. Tieu's Army veteran patient, his Dr. suggested acupuncture as a last-ditch effort to try before getting surgery; spoiler alert, the veteran had so much success with acupuncture and pain management that he skipped the surgery!

Dr. Tieu also discussed how acupuncture can inhibit the signals from the brain that are screaming, PAIN! It can block pain signals and turn down inflammation.

I've had great success in using acupuncture to manage pain. I broke my leg snow skiing twenty-five years ago and didn't have the resources to get it fixed using surgery (I didn't have good health insurance, owned a business, and couldn't afford to take time off). I used acupuncture for pain management and inflammation. Fast forward to today, and I've trained for and completed five half marathons and surf five days a week.

I can tell you that my experience with acupuncture has been nothing but positive!

Dr. Tieu received her Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine, Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and License in Massage Therapy at Bastyr University. She is board certified by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

She has participated in local nonprofit organizations that sought to provide care to underserved patients, focused on acute injuries and post-recovery treatments of athletes at Bastyr’s Sports Medicine Club, and volunteered as a clinical care member at her local hospital.

Dr. Tieu believes in providing quality patient care through an integrative medical approach. She is passionate about bringing sustainable changes to a patient’s overall health. Her current areas of interest are primary care, pain management, and dermatology.

  • Dr. Bill Schindler told me that in 2 decades of research, he’d learned two simple truths:

Humans are sicker than ever before, andWe must learn from the ancestral past to correct the mistakes of the modern food system.

In today's podcast, Dr. S. tells us we should ask ourselves not what we should eat but how; specifically, to look at food in an ancestral way that makes the food we eat as safe and nourishing as it can be for our bodies.

Bill has spent his career studying indigenous groups worldwide and now understands that living a full and healthy life means understanding how people prepared their food hundreds of years ago.

We had an enlightening discussion about fermented foods, nixtamalizing, organ meats, and farmer's markets. He explained that our digestive tract is very inefficient and "processing our foods," for example, eating sourdough bread can allow our bodies to absorb more nutrients from the food.

His website states that our relationship with food does not exist in a vacuum. That is why diets don't work – they are always out of context because they do not consider the other aspects of "life" that are so important to us. How we acquire, process, store, share, and consume food is uniquely human and embedded in practically all aspects of our lives. So learning to eat like humans again is really about learning to live like humans again.

I HIGHLY recommend purchasing his book, taking one of his online classes, or following him on social media! Click the link below for more deets!

  • What are EDCs and why should you care about them?

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are a group of compounds that, despite being unnoticeable, have the potential to disrupt the delicate balance of our endocrine system. These seemingly harmless substances are part of our daily lives, from the products we use to the food we consume. EDCs lurk in unexpected places, impacting hormonal functions and, consequently, our overall well-being.

I’ve invited environmental toxins and green living expert Deborah de Moulpied onto the show to give us the 411 on all things EDCs.

Stick around to learn where these toxic chemicals are hiding in our daily lives and how we can minimize our exposure.

  • If you're going to only listen to one of my podcast episodes this year, THIS IS THE ONE!

Wendy is a Toxins Lawyer and clean-living coach, and we had a candid and, at times, frightening conversation about tap water and cancer risk.

Before cancer, I would say that I was suspicious but still trusting; for example, if the water was coming out of my tap, I believed the government was doing its job to keep us safe.

Then the train derailed in Ohio, and within days the local government was telling its citizens the water was just fine.

I'm not a water expert, but I know enough to figure out that the water is unfit for consumption when thousands of chemicals get dumped into local waterways.

Wendy explained that when the clean water act was signed in 1974 that it worked well for the next 15 years. Then the local water companies decided they couldn't keep up with the water testing regulations, so the clean water act was amended. The EPA left it up to the discretion of individual water agencies to test or not test.

Since then, only two additional contaminants have been added to the list of chemicals to be aware of. And let's be honest; new chemicals are being created yearly in our country. Sadly, this is an example of buyer beware; we can no longer trust the water from our tap.

    Here are my questions:

    1. What's in my local water?

Go to this site to check out what contaminants might be in your local tap: EWG Tap Water Database.

    2. What can we do to drink water without contaminants?

Filter, filter, filter! Wendy discusses her fav filters in this podcast episode.

    3. How much is this going to cost me?

Wendy says this is the most critical first step to detoxing, so it will cost money; UGH! But she has multiple suggestions for filters at a variety of price points.

I'm picky about fish. I will only purchase wild fish, and yes, I'm that obnoxious person that asks the waitstaff in restaurants where they got the fish! I know that wild is healthier, and this is why I love ButcherBox wild salmon!

Recent studies show that higher fish consumption is associated with improved immune function. The study, which looked at the cancer-fighting effects of the Mediterranean diet, found that people who reported eating less fish and more red meat showed several common abnormalities in their blood that suggested a higher risk of cancer.

Wild and smaller fish, such as salmon, are anti-inflammatory and associated with better brain, hormonal, and nervous system health.

  • Today, let’s explore the two most downloaded episodes of 2023 for the "Why Did I Get Cancer?" podcast! These episodes left a lasting impact on our community and I had a great time going back and relistening to all of the great insights these guests shared.

The first standout episode featured sleep expert Devin Burke. Devin shed light on the profound connection between sleep and overall well-being. It's not surprising that this episode became a favorite among our audience, as the information provided by Devin was valuable and addressed a common struggle we all share.

I was a bit surprised to discover the second most downloaded episode, which was an episode that discussed the potential connection between boundaries and cancer. Known for his expertise in personal development and boundaries, Dr. Henry Cloud talked about our issues related to boundaries, codependency, and people-pleasing which could contribute to the risk of cancer.

  • I loved my conversation with Holistic Nurse Practitioner Alyssa Siegel.

Alyssa is not afraid to go against big pharma to tell us how to use pharmaceutical alternatives, such as supplements and tinctures.

She believes that the body can heal itself if we create a healthy environment so our bodies can thrive.

She is in hot pursuit of trying to find out what made her patients ill in the first place; what's the root cause of why they're sick?

She believes that the body is designed to heal itself and that you can recover if you can lower your toxin load. She also talks about the emotional aspect of illness and how that can be a considerable contributor to staying sick.

She was also very candid that the food most of us consume is very inflammatory, and it's difficult to heal when your body is in a state of inflammation.

She offered doable health hacks so that your body can heal itself!

  • 39: Putting ‘Junk’ in Your Heart Will Make You Sick

A candid conversation with Dr. Henry Cloud

Being vulnerable makes me uncomfortable, especially considering how I "used to be" before cancer.

Before cancer, it was crucial to me to be liked. So, "to make" people like me, I didn't always share my opinions or let people get to know the "real me."

When I received the cancer diagnosis, everything changed.

Suddenly, I had to save my energy for healing, and I stopped caring if people liked me. I then started to look at some of my relationships. Some of my friendships needed better boundaries, and I needed to manage my expectations about the friendship.

All of a sudden, I FELT FREE. I felt lighter and truly began to enjoy the people in my life.

I first heard Dr. Cloud, author of Boundaries, on the radio twenty-five years ago.

So, you can imagine how delighted I was when Dr. Cloud agreed to come on my podcast to discuss how our relationships can impact our health.

My specific question to him was this, "can a lack of boundaries or being co-dependent contribute to cancer risk?"

You've got to hear his surprising answer!

Dr. Henry Cloud is an acclaimed leadership expert, clinical psychologist, and New York Times bestselling author. His 45 books, including the iconic Boundaries, have sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide. In addition, he has an extensive executive coaching background and experience as a leadership consultant, devoting most of his time to working with CEOs, leadership teams, and executives to improve performance, leadership skills, and culture.

Boundaries.Me is your best option for mental health coaching by providing you with videos and thinking tools created by New York Times best-selling author and clinical psychologist Dr. Henry Cloud. You will learn how to apply the research-backed techniques that have helped thousands heal and thrive by following a personalized learning path, connecting with Dr. Cloud daily and joining a private support community.

  • 38: Can a Lack of Boundaries Contribute to Cancer Risk?

A candid conversation with Boundaries author, Dr. Henry Cloud.

I was 33, single, and struggling with boundaries. I always picked the wrong guy, and then the relationship would blow up, and I'd be crushed and have a crisis of confidence.

One day I was driving to a work appointment and switched on my radio and discovered Dr. Cloud on my local radio station. He spoke to my brokenness about my relationships. He taught me about boundaries in such a simple way! He stated that boundaries are like the locked door on a house; you unlock the door to let in the right people and keep it shut to keep the wrong people out!

You can imagine what a thrill it was for me to host Dr. Henry Cloud on my podcast! I was geeking out :) He's been my mentor and life coach for twenty-five years, and I've never even talked to him.

My focus of this interview was, can a lack of boundaries or being co-dependent contribute to cancer risk. Of course, I've been wondering if I've contributed to my cancer through the drama I've had in my personal life.

I found his answer surprising, so make sure you listen to part one of my interview with Dr. Cloud.

Dr. Henry Cloud is an acclaimed leadership expert, clinical psychologist, and New York Times bestselling author. His 45 books, including the iconic Boundaries, have sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide. • 45: Can a Lack of Sleep Cause Cancer? Getting Better Rest with Sleep Expert Devin Burke

I haven't been a good sleeper for the last twenty years or so. I overthink, and then I seem to get myself "worked up;" it takes me hours to fall asleep. Add in Covid and breast cancer, and I can tell you the last two years have been rough. This is why I was so excited to welcome sleep expert Devin Burke to today's podcast episode.

One of Devin's tips was to start my day with a glass of water and then coffee. He suggests I go outside and look toward the sun (never at the sun!), drink my water, and wait an hour before coffee.

I'm not sure I can do it, but I'm giving it a shot :)

Here's the sleep tip I've already started to incorporate, and I'm telling you, it's helping me to fall asleep faster.

Devin suggests going outside for five minutes a couple of times per day. The point is to give your brain a break and not try to solve any problems.

He concludes that giving your brain some downtime helps to encourage your body to sleep deeper at night.

This is harder than it sounds, so I had to leave my phone inside.

Give this episode a listen to hear more sleep tips that actually work!

  • 55: Things I Wish I Would Have Known 30 Years Ago, but I know them now!

Episode 4: Taking better care of my teeth can lower my risk of cancer.

And according to Dr. Kelly Blodgett, that doesn’t only mean brushing or flossing. He explained in our podcast that high-quality saliva leads to a healthier body. How do I improve the quality of my saliva? Find ten to fifteen minutes per day of peace. How does this help your oral health? When you start to relax, your blood flow is better all over your body, including your mouth. When the blood flow is good to your mouth, your saliva improves, which will then impact your gut health. When your gut health is better, YOUR HEALTH IMPROVES!

I encourage you to listen to our episode, Can Root Canals Contribute to Cancer Risk?

In our interview, we discuss holistic dentistry and how the health of your mouth can impact every cell in your body.

The second podcast I unpacked in this episode is with Keith Bishop, a clinical nutritionist and retired pharmacist. The title is Daily Habits to Prevent and Fight Cancer!

My takeaway today was that let's not make cancer prevention too complicated; there are simple habits we can incorporate daily that can knock down our risk.

Move a bit more each day.Cut back on sugar and alcohol.Don't drink super-hot beverages (darn it! I love my piping hot tea :)

Keith also told me that while colon cancer risk seems to be going down for older folks, colon cancer in younger people is on the rise. Why?

Keith believes a sedentary lifestyle is a significant contributor.
