  • In this episode, Jake and David discuss the book 'How to Read the Biblical Prophets' by Peter Gentry. They explore the unique writing style of the Hebrew prophets, which often uses repetition and recursive writing to convey their messages. The prophets' predictions are based on the judgments outlined in the Torah, and they often use types and typology to connect past events with future ones. The use of apocalyptic language is another tool the prophets employ to describe the future. Overall, the book provides valuable insights into understanding and interpreting the biblical prophets. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of understanding the context and purpose of prophecy in order to interpret it correctly.

  • In this episode, Jake and David hosts discuss commonly misunderstood verses in the Bible. They start by examining Matthew 21:18-22, which involves the cursing of a fig tree and the promise of prayer. They then move on to Matthew 7:1-5, which addresses the issue of judging others. The hosts explain that Jesus is condemning hypocritical judgment and emphasizing the importance of self-reflection before pointing out the faults of others. The conversation explores the potential misinterpretation of Bible verses and the importance of context in understanding the true meaning. It emphasizes the need to avoid using certain verses as a license to judge others and highlights the appropriate settings for judgment within church leadership. The hosts discuss the danger of misinterpreting passages without considering the broader context and allusions to the New Testament. They conclude by offering advice on reading the Bible, emphasizing the importance of reading the context around a verse.

  • Jake talks with Simon McIntyre about his new book "Joshua - Lessons in the Wilderness"
Leadership is a hot topic. Some suggest everything hangs on it, and maybe it does. However, the definition of Christian leadership, and the defining of a leader, doesn’t follow the trend of that offered by football coaches, military leaders, politicians and business gurus. Joshua is case in point. He never went to the equivalent of ivy league, Oxford, or Sandhurst College. His training was in a wilderness, far from comfort, recognition or accolade. He was trained in active faith, serving another’s vision, and god’s word and presence. It was these that defined him; it is these that define us, with some form of wilderness thrown in for good measure.
“Joshua - Lessons In The Wilderness” will be available via Amazon from June 19th. The book takes a deep dive into kingdom leadership principles through the lens of the life of Joshua.

  • In this episode, Jake Sweetman and David Campbell discuss the stunning Cathedral of Durham, which is home to some very prominent biblical scholars like N.T. Wright. We explore the Church of England and the battle shaping up for its soul between liberal and conservative factions.
David shares the inspiring story of Ellen Bell, the pastor of a church in Durham who has faithfully led his congregation for 30 years and how his hard work has paid off with the opening of a new building. This serves as a reminder to pastors that the path to growth is not always explosive, but faithful hard work is still rewarded.
They also examine the arbitrary benchmarks we often set for when someone qualifies as a person and how this ties into personhood theory.
This discussion touches on topics such as abortion, euthanasia, embryos, and transhumanism. They delve into how Greek philosophy, not the Bible, is the source of the idea of separating body from person, leading to extreme positions and the importance of Christians treating everyone with dignity, regardless of their beliefs.
Lastly, they explore the differences between moral and political issues and how they impact our society.
Join us as we discuss how Christians should approach politics, and distinguish between taking a stand on a moral issue versus an economic one. We consider the importance of taking a stance on moral issues like abortion and euthanasia, and the dangers of associating ourselves with an economic system. Politics is ultimately the promotion of truth, and as Christians, we must be careful to die on the right hill.
