His initial break came when he was asked to be a member of world renowned bassist’, Christian McBride’s quintet (Inside Straight) at the Jazz Standard in New York City. After, he collaborated with McBride in a celebrated trio and which gained a Grammy-nomination in 2013 with their release, “Out Here.”

Over the years, Sands has performed, collaborated and written with artists like Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, David Sanborn, Cécile Mclorin Salvant, Coolio, A Tribe Called Quest, Robin Thicke and Taylor Dayne to name a few as well as scoring music for television and film.
