  • Today's episode focuses on adrenal fatigue with our amazing guest Dr Erin Kinney.

Dr Kinney, native to Annapolis, MD is a doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, founder of the Body Wisdom Method and an Adrenal Fatigue Expert. She helps women with adrenal fatigue balance their stress hormones, improve their mood and increase their energy.

Many of her patients with adrenal fatigue also suffer from anxiety, feelings of overwhelm, depression, insomnia, thyroid disorders, constipation, gas and bloating, weight gain, joint pain and more.

She is extremely passionate about teaching women how to reconnect with the wisdom of their bodies and how to use this wisdom to help them rebalance and restore their innate healing ability.

We’ve certainly talked lots about stress on this podcast and how chronic high stress impacts our hormonal systems and can speed up the perimenopause changes, or amplify our symptoms. Today we’ll be talking specifically about adrenal fatigue.

We asked Erin what kind of stresses can lead to this kind of fatigue? Is it just emotional stress? and what are some of the common signs that you might have adrenal fatigue?

Erin told us about her approach to adrenal fatigue – what are some of the common things she tests for, what are typical recommendations for patients, and what are some of the tools she uses?

Finally, we asked Erin if she had three gems of pieces of advice for our listeners, what would they be?

  • This week's episode focuses on what lab testing you might want to consider when you experience a change in menses, increased or the start of PMS, or if your periods have become irregular, heavier or a little "wonky".

Shawna talks us through when to test, this is very important to get accurate results, and what to test for at different stages

We get into other testing that is also invaluable as we delve deeper into perimenopause such as insulin resistance, thyroid function, anaemia and adrenal/cortisol function.

This is an episode you do not want to miss! Shawna has such a deep knowledge of testing and gives us great insight into this often overlooked area of perimenopause.

  • This week's episode focuses on the gut and digestion. This week Shawna and I get into how the gut influences your hormones and how you can improve your digestion and liver function to improve life in general and balance your hormones.

We forget how good digestion is the cornerstone of health and the absence of disease. By adding in pre & probiotics, supporting the liver and choosing to eat foods that heal we can minimise, even eliminate PMS, bloating, breast tenderness and moodiness.

By modifying our diet to one that suits our lifestyle in perimenopause we can find balance and peace with the body, mind and spirit. This isn't just a diet, it's a lifestyle.

  • This week's episode focuses on relationship transitions as we chat with our good friend Dr Whitney Young ND.

  • This week's episode is all about how tracking your cycle can be so empowering! Shawna and I discuss how to "reframe your cycle" into a gift, something that ebbs and flows, gives, receives and takes away at different times.

I ask the question of what to do if you have irregular cycles, or you are on an IUD or you're taking the birth control pill - can you still track your cycles?

Shawna also emphasises the need to track your cycle even after the baby making days or when you're in perimenopause - yes, it's still important!

Shawna also reveals "what is normal" with regard to our cycles are we enter perimenopause - is there even such a thing as "normal" anymore?

I love the part where Shawna reveals her 3 challenges and 3 gifts to look for during your cycle - you won't want to miss that.

Finally, Shawna reveals her NEW 6-week program that she just launched and I SO excited about this!! Click on the links below to check out this amazing she had put together with you in mind.

  • Sat Dharam Kaur is a naturopathic doctor with over 20 years experience, who practices in Owen Sound, Ontario. She has three great passions: Kundalini yoga, naturopathic medicine, and environmental sustainability.

She is the creator the “Healthy Breast Program” which teaches strategies to prevent breast cancer and to assist in recovery from the disease using natural therapies in conjunction with conventional diagnostic and treatment options.

Some of the questions we asked Sat Dharam Kaur were:

The latest statistics from the Canadian cancer society state that 1 in 8 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. With numbers like this, breast cancer is something all women should take very seriously, not only women with breast cancer in their families. Shawna asks Sat Dharam Kaur if she feels like these numbers are rising, or is it more a matter of more early diagnosis?

What are some of the factors that affect our hormones, that can lead to more risk of breast cancer?

What are some of the risk factors that you look for when you first meet with a patient to talk about breast cancer prevention?

What are some of the things we should consider proactively to protect our breasts?

Here’s a big question, that can get quite controversial – what are your thoughts on screening: mammograms, ultrasound, self-breast exam, and thermogram. How often, what type, what age?

Ever have one of those days where you could eat all the candy in the store, all the cookies in the box or all the wine in the bottle? You feel like you're a zombie, in a trance-like state while you're eating/drinking these foods?

If you feel like your addicted to sugar, in particular, this episode focuses on how you can be kind to yourself while you work to transition yourself into a low/no sugar diet. Maggie and Shawna share with you some of their own strategies to deal with the cravings when they hit and how to be kind to yourself when you binge.

  • Today's episode focuses on you and what you can do to be your own best health advocate. Shawna and Maggie discuss how you can get the most out your health care provider by suggesting some tools you might find useful, and how we, as practitioners, are essentially educators, not "healers".

Do you find it difficult to talk to your current health care provider and ask for what you want? Does your health care provider work with other modalities to help facilitate your overall health? These are two key areas where you can be your own champion.

Finding the right fit for you in terms of a healthcare provider could mean all the difference between thriving or standing still. You have a say in your health journey and we talk about how you are ultimately responsible for your own health and how knowing this can be very empowering and healing in and of itself.
