    Mariaam is a qualified community development and social policy practitioner with extensive experience of advocacy and community organising. For over a decade she has worked on various national and global campaigns and provided peer support to migrants in low paid work. She has also facilitated groups and workshops in Ireland and at a European level.

    Mariaam is one of the 10 women co-founders of The Great Care Co-op; 2019 UN Fellow (Programme for People of African Descent) and was one of the 100 Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40 Worldwide 2020.

    She is also a Member of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Migration and served for the past two years on the OSCE’s survivor-led anti-human trafficking policy advisory council.

    Mariaam holds an BA (Honours) in Community and Youth Work and a Masters in Social Science (Rights and Social Policy) both from Maynooth University, Ireland; a Postgrad in European Union Policy-Making from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium and a Professional Diploma in Education (FET) from Marino Institute of Education, Ireland.

Claire shares her incredible story of pain and resilience through adversity which led to her passion for her work with women affected by homelessness.

    Claire has worked for many years with those experiencing homelessness, men, women and families. Since joining Tinteán 7 years ago, she is passionate about the experiences of mothers in particular and the invisibility they feel when they are separated from their children. She hopes to give women a voice, help them to feel visible in the world and their community, reduce the shame and stigma they feel, and also create a system in homeless services where we talk about issues such as this, and where we are skilled in supporting women to see their children where at all possible, and access services appropriately and empower them to self-advocate for their rights.

  • Join Audrey & Baggie as they hear from Rachel Fayne, Co-ordinator of the DAVINA Project (Domestic Abuse Violence Is Never Acceptable). The DAVINA Project is part of SAOL. SAOL is an integrated programme of education, rehabilitation, advocacy and childcare in North Inner City Dublin. The SAOL Project’s on-going commitment to the women, children and community members continues to develop, responding to the changing needs of the women who participate in our project with creativity and commitment.

    Rachel takes us on her journey into social care, following her passion to help the most marginalised in society, leading her to the DAVINA project. She gives good insights into what makes women who are affected by abuse and domestic violence so vulnerable and outlines what her project is doing to help. She also give a great insight into her own version of self-care which sustains her in her work.

    This episode has been released during the United Nations 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

  • In this episode of The Social Care Podcast, Audrey & Baggie chat with Sherin Hughes about the origins of the Sister Shed movement in Co. Dublin. Sherin shares her incredibly raw and personal story of grief following the sudden death of her mother, community activist Dympna Hughes and her subsequent healing only to be thrust into the depths of Covid isolation. Sherin and her cousin Rachel Hughes created the Sister Sheds out of a desire for connection with their communities and to help other women in need of support. This is a story of community and hope and it is evident that the Sister Sheds is the start of an incredible story of community renewal.
