  • With six months left in 2021 (or 185 days to be exact) there’s still a lot of movies coming our way this year, so @JackHoward, Clarisse Loughrey, Joe Ikhinmwin and special guest Anna Bogutskaya look ahead to discuss what releases they’re all looking forward to this year including Spider-Man

They might not see eye to eye on everything, but they’re all looking forward to Venom: Let There Be Carnage, or at least Jack thinks they are.

That's it for series 1 of The Screen Test, we’ll hopefully be back later in the year for series 2, but in case we don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!

  • We’re almost halfway through 2021 (even though it has felt much, MUCH longer) so in the final episode of the series, Jack Howard is challenging Joe Ikhinwmin, Clarisse Loughrey and film critic Anna Bogutskaya to convince him which film is the best of the year so far.

Who will come out on top between Judas And The Black Messiah, Nomadland and Promising Young Woman?

Clarisse believes the Oscars finally got it right and that Nomadland really is the best picture, but Joe found it boring and prefers Judas And The Black Messiah because of how eye-opening and relevant it is to today’s issues. Anna meanwhile loves Promising Young Woman for many reasons, including the meta-casting of ‘nice-guy’ actors in more sinister roles.

Who do you think will win? Join us next week for a BONUS episode of The Screen Test where we look ahead to what films we're most looking forward to for the rest of 2021.

  • Sam from The Cyber Nerds joins Jack Howard, Clarisse Loughrey and Joe Ikhinmwin to debate who the apex predator of cinema is between the Xenomorph from Alien, Jurassic Park's T-Rex and King Kong.

Sam thinks Peter Jackson's King Kong is the best iteration of the creature because of how Andy Serkis' motion capture brought the oversized ape to life, H.R Geiger's bio-mechanical design of the Xenomorph is what stands out for Clarisse, and Joe thinks every scene featuring the T-Rex in Jurassic Park is iconic.

What monster do you want to win? Sound off in the comments below. Next week, film critic Anna Bogutskaya joins The Screen Test to discuss the best films of 2021 so far.

Alasdair has chosen The Wicker Man because he prefers horror films that are weird rather than scary, Clarisse believes The Shining is the best because of how much it has influenced the genre, while Get Out is Joe’s pick because it has redefined what a horror film can be.

  • Jack Howard is feeling the need, the need to find out what Tom Cruise’s best movie is and its up to Clarisse Loughrey, Joe Ikhinmwin and Matt from Full Fat Videos to convince him that theirs should be the winner.

Joe thinks Jerry Maguire is exactly the kind of film Tom Cruise should be making as it showcases his acting abilities, Clarisse just loves Top Gun because some of it is just plain weird and Matt just makes up facts about Edge of Tomorrow to try and take the victory.

Do you think the right Tom Cruise movie won? Let us know in the comments below and next week Alasdair Beckett-King joins the gang to fight it out over the best horror movie of all time between The Shining, Get Out and Wicker Man.

  • Introducing your new podcast obsession...Escape: The Underground Railroad, a companion podcast to the new Prime Video limited series The Underground Railroad. Directed by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins.

In the telling of the history of the transatlantic slave trade, enslaved people were frequently painted as passive victims - but there have always been active resistance and success. Escape: The Underground Railroad Podcast will be dedicated to exploring rebellions, uprising and escapes - celebrating powerful stories and individuals who never stopped fighting oppression.

A companion podcast to the Prime Video limited series, our hosts, Miquita Oliver and Desiree Burch, will uncover stories of resistance by enslaved peoples that don’t often get told. Enslaved individuals were always resisting and their history is one full of pride. Each week, our hosts invite a different historian to focus on a story of a rebellion or escape and demonstrate that enslaved communities never gave up in their search for freedom and human rights.

Joe thinks the 1995 version of Mortal Kombat deserves a flawless victory because its a huge nostalgia trip and has even influenced the games, Elz thinks Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is the best because it hits you right in the feels and Clarisse will fight anyone just for the chance to hug that cute little fur ball Pikachu.

Clarisse says Mad Max: Fury Road is such a masterpiece that she cried when she first saw it, Ali thinks there’s no better action movie star than Keanu Reeves so John Wick is the obvious choice and Joe reckons The Raid 2 is so good, every other franchise has stolen ideas from it.

The Prisoner of Azkaban opened the door for Joe to fall in love with the world of fantasy, Bam thinks every scene in Return of The King is better than the last and Clarisse believes Guillermo Del Toro is the granddaddy of fantasy, so Pan’s labyrinth deserves to be crowned the best fantasy film.

How will La La Land rank against A Star Is Born and Whiplash? Well, Dodie thinks La La Land should win because it’s just so damn magical, Clarisse argues that the 2018 version of A Star Is Born is the best out of any of the iterations because of Lady Gaga’s powerhouse acting and Joe is here to explain why JK Simmons was justified with his unorthodox teaching methods in Whiplash.
