  • Kiera Smalls’ personal mission is to connect resources to the people who need them most. She’s been a community reporter for WHYY in Philadelphia, launched the city’s bike share program, advised race presenters on inclusivity, and co-founded the fitness community Strides (formerly City Fit Girls). Today she is the Executive Director of the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC), which envisions a running industry committed to racial justice.

RIDC was formed in response to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a young Black man who was murdered while he was out for a run. Its mission is to unite the running industry to provide resources, measure progress, and hold the industry accountable to equitable employment, leadership, and ownership positions and improve inclusion, visibility, and access for Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

  • Allie Ostrander is the example that she needed when she was younger. She was a high school track phenom, three-time NCAA steeplechase champion, and a professional runner with Brooks Beasts. But she suffered from an eating disorder the entire time, resulting in a string of injuries.

In 2021, she entered an intensive recovery program, and went public with her story while she was there. She hopes that by sharing her experience she can educate young people and help them avoid the consequences of eating disorders and RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport).

  • Ultrarunner Jacky Hunt-Broersma ran 104 consecutive marathons in the same number of days. That feat got her into the Guinness Book of World Records, but seeing her name in the record book wasn’t her motivation. Jacky lost her leg to cancer when she was 26 years old, and she wanted to make a difference for other amputees.

She did just that, raising almost $200,000 to benefit amputee blade runners, and inspiring not only athletes who look different, but everyone who sees her and is motivated to not give up, and to keep going forward.

We’ve had a growing focus on environmental action, which we’ll continue to pursue. We’re launching a terrific online resource, “RED-S: Realize, Reflect, Recover” to help anyone affected by Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, from beginner runners to elite athletes. And of course we’ve welcomed amazing, inspiring guests to the podcast, and look forward to introducing our audience to many more. There’s a lot to look back on and forward to!

  • Many listeners will recognize themselves in Brodie Sharpe’s analyses of injured runners. As a runner himself, he relates to the ways that runners’ personalities can contribute to injury. As a physiotherapist, he uses that understanding to inform his holistic approach to helping them recover. If you’re a runner who tends to get injured, this episode is definitely for you.

Brodie is the host of the Run Smarter podcast, founder and CEO of the Run Smarter series, and author of Run Smarter: Evidence-Based Guidance to Help You Survive & Thrive as a Runner.

  • Nick Cutsumpas admits that going for a run with him can be “a hassle” because he’ll stop to take pictures of plants. That just comes with the territory when your running companion is “Farmer Nick,” host of Netflix’s Instant Dream Home. An urban gardener and landscape designer, Nick believes that the more you’re connected to nature, the more likely you are to act with its best interest in mind. His new book, Plant Coach: The Beginner’s Guide to Caring for Plants and the Planet, revolves around the idea that plants are stepping stones towards sustainability, the botanical bridge that will allow you to connect differently with nature.

  • Chris Mosier is the first trans athlete to compete for Team USA, first trans man to represent the United States in international competition, and first trans athlete to qualify for the Olympic Trials in any sport in a category different than their sex assigned at birth. He’s been hailed by the BBC as “the man who changed the Olympics,” credited for the International Olympic Committee’s policy change for trans athletes.

In light of the recent tragedy at Club Q in Colorado Springs, we felt that this was an appropriate time to reshare this episode, which was initially released in February, 2021.

  • Thirteen years ago, Christopher McDougall’s best-selling book, Born to Run, introduced the world to the Tarahumara tribe and created an intense interest in minimalist running. In it, Chris described his own journey from chronically injured runner to running 50 miles through Mexico’s Copper Canyon. He was guided by coach Eric Orton, without whom, he says, there would have been “no Born to Run. I would not have run; I would not be running today.”

Chris and Eric have teamed up again to write Born to Run 2: The Ultimate Training Guide, with the goal of bringing more joy into running.

  • In 2018, Canyon Woodward teamed up with his friend and fellow climate activist, Chloe Maxmin, to manage her campaign running for the Maine House of Representatives. She became the first Democrat to ever represent her district. Two years later, he organized her state senate run, which saw her become the youngest female state senator in Maine’s history.

A champion ultra runner, Canyon sees parallels between trail running and the campaign trail. Running also gives him a respite from the demands of politics, whether he’s on the old logging paths of his native North Carolina or competing in the UTMB.
