This past weekend a few of us MSU residents decided to take a road trip to the birthplace of osteopathy – Kirksville, MO. Some of the highlights were visiting the Museum of Osteopathy, Dr. Still’s gravesite, touching theboots he wore and the staff he used. Jason, our guide, did an incredible job recounting the history and showing that although Still had his gifts he also had his limitations. I hope every osteopath is able to make it to Kirksville, and if you can’t well here are a few stories to share what it’s like.

His life evolves around love, love for self and love for the patient in front of him. One of his mentors the great Robert Fulford, DO said love holds everything together. All people are loveablebecause of their inherent health however great or little it may be. The person’s health, according to Dr. Friedman is vastly more intelligent than the provider. In his practice the provider is to be in tune with health or in tune with what may be lacking inherent motion. This health is perceived through “Stillness”. Perception,he says, is not a projection. Perception is not willed. Perception should be of what is true. Enjoy this conversation which bounces between the physical and spiritual.

He is an artist, neuroscientist with synesthesia who has aunique view and experience of the world. He brings this experience to his medical practice. Rooted in his knowledge of human anatomy, osteopathic techniques and understanding the human condition allows his perception of the person to guide him to where and how he should treat. For him osteopathy is this dance of two biological systems fighting chaos. While treating he does his best to get out of the way, meeting the person where they are, listening to what the patient says, paying attention to nonverbal cues and being empathetic. He is an expert in acupuncture, using it as a means to help patients who manifestpsychosomatic problems. He believes in the importance of breathing, sharpening your mind, healing your body and bolstering your spirit as a way to help your treatments be more effective. He is a researcher pushing the specialty of OMM forward. Enjoy this dynamic and informative conversation with Dr. King, DO an osteopathic healer.

In this lecture style episode we will talk about how the Zink Model as a postural model rooted in tensegrity. How fascia plays a key role in tensegrity. We will learn about how fascia is contractile, aids in tissue gliding, is innervated and may be a pain generator if mechanically strained. There will be a discussion about the girdling effect of the thoracolumbar fascia and how it forms an axial ring between thorax and pelvis. Finally we will end with learning how to diagnose and treat Pelvic Cross Syndrome along with strengthening deep core stabilizers.

He is an internist whose heart lies in the philosophy of osteopathy. He reminds us medicine is both art and science. For both him and Dr. Still, osteopathy begins with anatomy. He visualizes the anatomy as he treats the patient, restoring motion and more specifically the blood flow. You must know anatomy to find and help restore health. Throughout his many years of clinical experiences working as an internist and understanding disease processes, he has trained himself to palpate and understand visceral somatic dysfunction. He
has a reverence for the patient in front of him, listening and allowing the body to tell him what it needs. He attracts crowds of students during the Evening with the Stars, at the annual convocation so much so that students have asked him to come to teach at their medical school. Enjoy our conversation!

He was described by one of his patient’s as compassionate, conscientious, and a caring physician. He worked for 8 years at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, WA but wanted more quality time with his patients. During the COVID pandemic he opened his own practice “360 Osteopathy”. Dr. West gives us his take on working for a hospital system vs working for himself – the challenges and benefits. He is a physiatrist who practice is 99% OMM. He spends some time comparing and contrasting PM&R and OMM, which may be beneficial for students deciding between these two specialties. He also gives some incredible book and podcast recommendations. Enjoy our conversation!

Her medical journey began after being hit by a car while riding her bicycle. She never broke any bones but that trauma manifested in her body as a daily headache. She never felt heard by the physician who examined her after the accident and from that time forward resolved to become a caring, compassionate physician who listened attentively to her patient’s. OMM was her saving grace and the mentoring of Dr. Ed Stiles inspired her to choose a career path using the OMM. Today she is an ONMM Residency director educating and inspiring the next generation of osteopathic physicians. Enjoy my conversation with Dr. Kingery.

An athlete himself, interest in MSK medicine was a great fit. Enjoying medicine and the ICU he decided to train as an Internist, but never lost his desire to treat athletes. Following residency, he matriculated into a Sports Medicine Fellowship where his skills and knowledge of OMM were in everyday use. He values all the modalities of OMT but has found great utility in the Fascial Distortion Model Technique in treating all patients with musculoskeletal pain not only athletes. He says although this technique may be painful but is not harmful. The body has inherent intelligence which communicates with us via the body language of the patient. Enjoy this conversation as we learn about Dr. Paiva’s career trajectory and more about the Fascial Distortion Model.

Our topic for Philosteopathy this month was Myofascial Pain Syndrome. The concept has been around since the 1960’s. We discussed some of the possible etiologies from the Travell trigger points to overuse syndromes, ROM loss, Autoimmune Disease, low Vit D, side effects of statin drugs, straining the fascial system with poor posture and psycho-emotional trauma. We spoke about how chronic myofascial pain may lead to central sensitization – a cycle of negative emotions and thoughts reiterating the narrative of your pain. The thoughts of “I am damaged, I am broken, or I cannot get better” being played over and over in one’s head. An important aspect of addressing our patient’s myofascial pain is listening to the patient’s words, observing their behaviors and slowly addressing their fears if they are ready. This often means addressing their pain with many different modalities such as manipulation or injections. Although the keystone to a positive outcome seems to be empowering the patient to take ownership of their health to change their identity. Enjoy the conversation on Myofascial Pain!
