In episode 44, which was recorded a few days ago and just before leaving for South Korea, Jay not only elaborates on his 'sudden Spring' over to South Korea and it being the 10th visit to Korea in 12 years, but also speaks about why he chose to do this.
You'll hear how Jay, having only left Korea in Winter [2023] & now revisiting less than 4 months later in Spring [2024, intends to spend his next few weeks - or maybe a couple of months - in Korea.
Not only are there details of various places on Jay's list, like Cheongju, Seoul, Busan, Jeongju and Jeju Island but also reasons for choosing those places and how some of these opportunites arose. On top of that, you'll also find out about film festivals, Korean film as well as regarding Korean culture in other countries - these include Korean-related events & topics from the nearby countries of Thailand and Vietnam!
Lastly, but something which plays a large part in this 10th trip of Jay's to Korea, is the subject of the 10th anniversary of the Sewol ferry tragedy.

In this episode [no. 42], we speak with musician, dog lover and activist Annie Ko about South Korea's recent announcement to ban dog meat consumption and the existence of dog meat farms - of which there have been apparently 10.000+ in South Korea - and her experience & involvement with the various organisations which have been doing their best to raise awareness and rescue dogs from such farms.
As a bit of background, in January 2024, South Korea passed a law which bans dog-meat & therefore the capture, killing and supplying & selling of dogs to consumers for eating. So, essentially, a ban on the production, sale & the torture which leads to the consumption of Dog-Meat.
Annie explains about her experience of consuming dog meat, but also the origins of dog-meat and dog-eating in a once poverty stricken South korea and touches on the festival associated with dog-meat. We also chat about what can go on 'behind the scenes' of certain pet shops and pet owners in South Korea, the recent "Nureongi" documentary and its impact - a link to this documentary can be found below this description and Annie & Toby's beloved and rescued pet dog, Deejay!
Although a lot is covered in this interview with Annie it is clear that one of her more recently found passions is one of caring for dogs, including their adopted "Deejay the Dog" and of course her love of music and continuing to be one part of the Seoul-based electric rock duo Love X Stereo.
It's also clear that we’ve a long way to go in this world until we end cruelty across the board to living animals and sentient beings, but this focuses on man’s - and woman’s - best friends, DOGS!

In this episode [no. 41], Jay announces the news about two interviews coming your way in February and March, and the which start next week, in episode 42.
The first of these guests is Annie Ko, one part of the Seoul-based electric rock duo Love X Stereo and who speaks to us about the recent ban on breeding, slaughtering & ultimately the sale of dog-meat in South Korea, and and her involvement in this. It is suggested that you see some of the links (articles and documentaries) below to get a bit of an understanding of the dog-meat controversy, the new ban and Annie's involvement.
A lot is covered in this upcoming interview with Annie and we are proud and excited to bring it to you.
The second guest, whose interview will feature in March is Ana Bondarenko and she runs a multicultural open art/print/design studio and art café in a beautiful city Busan, South Korea.
This interview should give new perspectives on various aspects relating to living and working in South Korea.

After about a Series and a half - and ahead of our long-awaited full interview with James Turnbull - we introduce a new angle or format that some of our episodes will take.

In episode 36 of the 'NoSoKoPo', Jay introduces details of the shows's upcoming special guest, James Turnbull, author/founder of The Grand Narrative (https://thegrandnarrative.com) and does so by recording a 'live in Saigon' segment, just before his flight to South Korea, where he intends to spend a few months. You'll not only hear a tiny piece of this interview with James Turnbull at the start but even a little more at the end of the epsiode.
Once again, Jay touches on the Korean influence in Vietnam, speaks a little about Chuseok (and the Asian mid Autumn festival in general), the Busan International Film Festival 2023 (BIFF) and the upcoming and 18th London Korean Film Festival (LKFF - more details over at MiniMiniMovie.com) and the soon-to-be-10th anniversary of the tragic Sewol ferry (세월호) incident.
A moment is also taken to explain the direction Jay - and hopefully Tim too - will take this Not So Korean Podcast in the future. Yes... A lot is covered in this special episode but perhaps the big question is... Will Jay, on this 9th time in South Korea stay to experience his first cold December there?

In this latest episode [no. 34] of the 'NoSoKoPo', recorded in Seoul, Jay speaks to a man of many talents, An Sonjae (안선재) aka Brother Anthony / Brother Anthony of Taizé.
An Sonjae is a writer, translator, scholar and naturalized Korean citizen but also quite an expert on various aspects of Korean culture.
In what is a shorter interview that our recent ones, Jay and Brother Anthony manage to cover various topics and these include the origin of An Sonjae's name, becoming a Korean citizen, how he got into translation and more.
Although this epsiode - and therefore interview - is under 30 minutes in length, it's likely that An Sonjae will make a return to the Not So Korean Podcast at a later date and when we can focus on one or two of so many of his talents or areas of expertise.
We would like to thank to thank An Sonjae / Brother Anthony once again, and not only for sparing his time, but also for spending quite a bit of time with Jay on his most recent trip to South Korea (a little of which is spoken about in the introduction segment of this epsiode.

PART TWO ('Return Of Aline') - Following on from the first part of this interview [in Episode 30], Jay continues his discussion with Korean adoptee, Aline Giordano about the recently released - and much acclaimed - film by Davy Chou, “Return To Seoul”, a film revolving around a Korean adoptee from France but finding herself [perhaps in more ways than one] in South Korea.
As before, Aline and Jay also branch off onto other topics, such as Aline’s work, her first time visiting Korea, creativity and how it can feel to be an adoptee. Of course, the conversation always 'returns' to the subject of the movie "Return To Seoul”, its music and music in general & music as therapy.
Aline also tells us about whether she will ‘return to Seoul’ herself and also talks more about her Gestalt therapy work. Furthermore, that film’s use of translation & of more than one language is touched on, as is Aline & Jay’s ability or non-ability to learn multiple languages.

PART ONE (Korean Adoptee ALINE: Adoption, Adapting & Abandonment)... In episode 30 of the 'NoSoKoPo', Jay speaks to Korean adoptee, Aline Giordano about the recently released - and much acclaimed - film by Davy Chou, “Return To Seoul”, a film revolving around a Korean adoptee from France but finding herself [perhaps in more ways than one] in South Korea.
Aline and Jay also branch off onto other topics, such as Aline’s work,her first time visiting Korea, creativity and music, as well as how it can feel to be an adoptee.
This is Part One of the interview, with Part Two coming in episode 31 of the Not So Korean Podcast.

Welcome to the 3rd episode [no. 28] of Series 2 of the 'NoSoKoPo' and in this show we hear from Jay when he was in South Korea & in particular about his slightly restricted arrival in Incheon International Airport to his then arriving, a few hours later at his 'close to Ikseon-dong*' accomodation and therefore in the Jongno area of Seoul.
Jay's somewhat "long, winding" journey - and 'long-winded' story to match - touches on everything from getting hold of a sim-card, transportation options, passing through immigration, luggage issues, money, masks and a whole lot more.
It's worth pointing out that certain requirements or restrictions relating to travelling to South Korea will have changed since this was recorded (which was in the latter part of 2022) but much of what Jay has to say can still be applicable.
*This was almost unbeknown to Jay [his precise proximity to the that hanok-ridden area (aka Ikseondong Hanok Village / 익선동 한옥거리)] and this was perhaps Jason's first experience of such Ikseon-dong streets. You may hear more about this in a future Not So Korean Podcast show -and perhaps as a kind of 'Part 2' of to this episode - if only to hear Jay's realisation of his very close proximity to Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁) and Changgyeonggung Palace (창경궁)!

Welcome to the second episode [no. 27] of Series 2 of the 'NoSoKoPo' and in this show, we let you hear Jay and Tim's 'farewell chat', recorded just before Jason/Jay left for his few months in South Korea.
The chat consisted of discussion about what or where the previous 12 months (& more than 25 epsiodes) had taken Jay and Tim and their lives in New Malden (aka KoreaTown UK), as well as vague plans whilst being apart and also what you lovely "Not So Korean Podcast" listeners may have to look forward to in future episodes.
Tim & Jay also hint at future plans regarding a standalone YouTube channel and website [if you've heard epsiode 26 you'll know about these now - full details below too!] and Jason presented Timothy with a very apt gift, one which consisted of elements relating to 3 countries Tim has an interest in: Primarily though, South Korea and his native Canada, but also Thailand.

In episode 25, we take a different angle by TIM interviewing JAY about his Korean-themed mid-length film drama, "REPARATION" and what it was like for the film to have been Officially Selected by the inaugural Kingston International Film Festival (KIFF), as well as what is next for this film, including its Korean Premiere coming up in South Korea.
Jay also discusses how he assisted in getting the Korean language film by director Jules Suo, "SESANG" into KIFF 2022 as part of its Far East Asian Film strand.
