  • John and Ben sit down with all three members of the pioneering Swedish stoner rock band, Blind Dog, to discuss their 1999 debut album, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog. Comprised of guitarist Joakim Thell, drummer Thomas Elenvik, and bassist/vocalist Tobias Nilsson, Blind Dog began making riff-heavy underground rock well before bands like Kyuss, Monster Magnet, and Queens of the Stone Age had become household names.

Over 20 years later, the band reflects on their early days and the recording sessions for Last Adventures and begins a discussion of the album's key moments; a discussion to be continued in Part Two of the interview, available March 22, 2022 at https://greatestthingpodcast.com and on all major podcast platforms.

  • John and Ben continue their discussion of Blind Dog's debut stoner classic, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog. An underappreciated gem from the late 90s and early aughts foundational generation of heavy rock, the band pulls incluences from the desert and the swamps of New Orleans while staying clear of the genre's cliches by putting focus on songwriting and stronger than expected musicianship. This episode continues our discussion of the album's key moments, starting with Track 5. When I'm Finally Gone.

  • Ben and John begin their discussion of Blind Dog's debut album, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog. Originally self-released in 1999, the album would see a number of pressings in subsequent years on the Meteor City and People Like You labels amongst others.

Though the band hailed from Sweden, they played a version of stoner rock not out of place alongside american bands such as Kyuss, COC, Monster Magnet, and Down. The band's take on US heavy ultiamtely showcased a more song-forward sensibility and musicianship that often outclassed their peers, easily avoiding stereotypes of lazy stoner musicians.

  • Ben and John sit down with Solace founder and guitarist, Tommy Southard, to discuss the band's 2003 sophomore outing, the (literally and figuratively) doomed 13 (previously featured on the show, here). With over four decades in heavy rock, Southard's played in genre defining bands in both hardcore and doom metal in addition to touring with the likes of Black Sabbath and Cathedral. Here, he discusses the patchwork recording process for 13 and how it led to the creation of the band's accidental masterpiece.

The Greatest Thing You've Never Heard is a like a book club for your next favorite record. Each episode is an in-depth examination of a single album that's worthy of greater recognition. Our co-hosts, Ben and John, spend a full episode discussing an album and then often use a follow-up episode to interview the band that recorded it.
