  • What happens when a trauma-informed practitioner tackles their own trauma? What does feeling safe with our entire bodies have to do with our mental health and our spirituality? What does somatic work look and sound like?

In this episode, I invite my friend Rosemary (a fellow mental health practitioner)to interview me about the trauma healing process I've moved through the last six months. It's a deeply honest conversation that will give you an overview of my journey as I've worked through trauma activation, release and nervous system re-regulation. To hear the "during" of the process, check out Episode Six (Activating Trauma in Order to Heal It)or the rest of the Trauma & Liberation series which will air over the next few episodes.

I also briefly share about my new book project and monthly Q&A phone calls, as well as remind listeners about my retreat with Madison Hedlund and Hilary Mcbride The Way Home.

  • This week, we're taking a break from the Trauma Series in order to chat about space holding!

On Thursday, I'm announcing all the details on The Be With Initiation and flinging wide open the doors to registration. So to get us ready, I'm sharing real, raw stories from my own life all this week about the gifts of true, compassionate space holding.

On today's episode, I share how a safe counseling relationship helped me put my healing focus back where it belonged - on me and my own goodness and worth. Listen in to hear me tell a story that includes my time at Campus Crusade for Christ, the lyrics to Ariana Grande's Thank U, Next song and how a series of rainbow posters helped me heal.

  • Today’s episode is the first in a series on trauma.

As I move out of a deep time of unknown, and enter the process of becoming this next version of myself, trauma has begun to surface in order to be healed. Listen in as I share what this has been like for me, how I've been supporting myself, and how my work in therapy has supported to help me think about this time as a time when my trauma is being activated in order to be healed.

I also hint at my new online training in this episode!

  • Today’s episode is a real-time look at where I’m at and an honest reflection on how I’ve navigated a time of introspection, contraction and slowing down. 2018 has been a whirlwind for me, blessing me with greater expansion then I could have previously imagined, and asking of me deeper personal exploration then I’ve done in a decade.

On this episode I walk you through the tools I’ve been using to find my way forward, what I’ve found challenging in this stage of evolution and how you can use self & community care to bolster yourself when the going gets tough.

Want to support Be With? Please subscribe, rate and review this podcast on iTunes, and share it with the people you love!

    IN THIS EPISODE:
    - Looking back on 2018 (2:30)
    - Why, hello contraction! (5:15)
    - What I've been doing for self-care to navigate this time of contraction (19:40)

    Quotes from Barbara:

“All things move from expansion to contraction to expansion again.”

“Our culture really celebrates the expansion part of our human experience and not the contraction of our human experience.”

“Whenever there’s something happening for one of us, we can find a mirror for that in the collective - for everyone. As much as we think we are separate, we are all deeply connected by our energy, by the very nature of what we are.”

“Underneath day to day contraction, there is spiritual growth and healing that’s happening that’s running like groundwater, deep underneath the level of the earth.”

“Follow wherever the energy is to what will allow you to feel a sense of accomplishment, that’s not about your worth or your ego brain and questions like - am I good, am I not good? But that’s going to give you a sense of movement, of completion and clearing. So anything that’s going allow you to feel like you’re physically playing with the energy of clearing so you can make space for creation. We’re following the breadcrumbs of our energy to know that though we might know the thing that is coming, we do know the things that we are letting go of. This is really crucial to the process of trusting ourselves in the moment."

    Quotes Mentioned:
    - "What the caterpillar calls the end, the rest of the world calls a butterfly" - Lao Tzu
    - “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.” - Ranier Maria Rilke

  • Today on the podcast we unpack the topic of intuition - looking at what it is, how it functions and how we differentiate it from our fear. In preparation for this episode, I asked my IG community what questions you have about your intuition and the same question came up over and over again, “How can I trust I’m hearing my intuition and not my fear/trauma/old programming/ego?”

I address this by putting to question the tendency to pit these two parts of ourselves as enemies, and suggest instead that we consider how the two work together. I close up the podcast with a 13 minute meditation through which we will tune in with our deepest self, listening and tending to our pain (human self/ego) so we can have access to and hear our intuition and truth.

    TOPICS DISCUSSED:
    What is our Intuition (6:40)
The role of our ego in evolution (13:48)
Anecdote about listening to my intuition which I use to teach principles of listening to your intuition (17:53)
A meditation to help you tune in and tend to your fear/pain so you can also hear your intuition (45:12)

  • Today I interview one of my best friends Margeaux Feldman, as we talk about defining success under capitalism, what neoliberalism actually means, and how to have difficult conversations that foster growth and learning rather than shame and anger.

Some of the topics we discuss get a little heavy, and it may be hard to listen to, especially for those of us living in the margins. If you feel triggered, please take a break and come back when you’re ready. The conversation unfolds so that you get to see Margeaux and I modeling the exact behavior we discuss in how to stay curiously and creatively engaged when a tough subject is broached.

    QUOTABLE MOMENTS:
“If we want to move forward, and we want people to stay engaged, we have to be thoughtful in how shame works, and we need to be thoughtful in supporting folks in working through their shame so they don’t get stuck in it because shame isn’t the point.” -Barbara
“It’s possible for everyone to grow.” -Margeaux
“We exist therefore we are valid.” -Barbara
“I want to live in a world where we can be so open about our politics but the reality is when we do that we often alienate people who don’t understand the full picture.” -Margeaux

    TOPICS DISCUSSED:
How we show up as our authentic selves on the Internet (7:00)
The night Margeaux held space for Barbara when she felt profoundly stuck (14:26)
    #noshadetobaths (17:40)
    Defining Neoliberalism & Late Capitalism
Getting curious about our difficult feelings (33:37)
Labour that isn’t supported under capitalism (34:48)
Exploring the question, “What is the gentlest thing you can do for yourself right now?” (41:00)
How to have difficult conversations with friends (44:53)
The difference between calling out and calling in (46:36)
Dealing with shame in difficult conversations and in allyship (50:56)

  • Today, listen in on a Q & A all about feelings. I answer listener questions like:

    - How do I make myself feel like I’m enough?
    - Jealousy is killing me, help!
    - What if I’m afraid of my feelings overwhelming me?
    - What do I do with feelings of guilt about family?
    - Anger, wtf?

Learn how to look at your feelings in a new way and practice curiosity about what’s really going on underneath so you can move through the emotion, meet your needs and feel better. We’ll explore how slowing down with what we’re feeling in the present moment is a way of creating evidence for ourselves that what we feel is okay, and that we’re worth the love and attention. Feelings are useful information - learn how to understand yours!

  • Welcome to the Be With podcast! This inaugural episode offers an introduction into what you can expect to hear in future episodes: an exploration of spirituality, coaching conversations from an intersectional, social justice focused lens, and all the thoughts about all the feelings. Learn more about me, my background, and the process that led me to launching this podcast.

Ultimately, filling our own cup is not only self-care, but it’s critical for community engagement so expect to hear lots about how we do just that! When we can have be honest with ourselves about what we need, and develop a comfort level of being with ourselves in a non-judgmental, purely curious way, then we can use those same skills to have similar conversations with our closest relationships and community-at-large. By acknowledging and taking care of our needs, we can change the world.
