  • This week we chat about climate risks. We are joined by Kiera Peacock, commercial litigation partner at Marque Lawyers who is our resident expert on all things climate change.

The backdrop to our discussion is:

The "Green Recovery" where nations around the world have directed Covid 19 stimulus towards clean, rather than polluting, options. While the March 2021 UN Environment Programme report found that 18% of total recovery spending around the world has gone towards green initiatives, unfortunately in Australia, the figure is 2% and of the major economies, Australia was the worst. President Biden’s Climate Summit, held to coincide with Earth Day, where the US increased its pledge to cut carbon emissions by 2030 but Australia stuck to its Abbott-era 2030 emissions pledge. The announcement of Australia's federal budget last week which contained little funding for renewables and climate change action.

    We ask Kiera to explain:

What are the climate agreements around the world? What does net zero emissions mean? What is Australia's legal approach to climate change? What is the Australian government doing? What are businesses doing? Why should companies start thinking about climate risks? What are the biggest risk for companies who don't think about climate risks? How do you build in good governance practices that include climate considerations.

  • We examine what 2020 meant for women. As you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a massive global economic downturn. You have probably heard the terms “pink recession” and “she-cession”, describing the fact that women have been more financially and mentally impacted by the impacts of COVID-19 compared to men. This week we delve into why this is the case. We discuss:

the general impact that COVID-19 has had on womenthe impact to funding for female founded start ups (hint - it was bad)why women have been hardest hitwhy it matters and why women are key to economic recoverythe wins for women in 2020

We also chat about the 2021 International Women's Day theme #choosetochallenge, what that means to us and the IWD events we are excited about.

  • We're back and super excited about our second season of Subtitles On.

Season 2 has the same simple goal, we unpack corporate language that is designed to confuse and exclude. Unfortunately, when you look at the stats, and from firsthand experiences, it is often women who are underrepresented and excluded from starting businesses, running companies, or being appointed to the board of directors.

We, G and Fee, the hosts of Subtitles On and lawyers from Marque's corporate team, work a lot with female founders and start-ups, so that’s who we are talking to although men are allowed to listen too. If you haven't already tuned in, think of the podcast as your corporate subtitles service, so you’ll never again find yourself in a boardroom wondering if you’re the only one who doesn’t know what a shot-gun clause does.

This season we will continue to tackle big legal topics, but we are also going to:

focus on trends and what we are seeing in the Australian start-up communityshare some case studies share our predictions for 2021

  • After a not so brief hiatus, we are back!

We all know that it is the people behind a startup that can make or break its chance of success. So with limited financial capacity during the crucial years of growth how do startups attract, retain and incentive talent? Often the answer is an ESOP, also known as employee share ownership plan.

Join us, G and Fee this week on Subtitles On where we chat all things ESOPs.

  • When you are looking to raise money for your start up the first thing you probably think about is giving away shares (equity) for money. However, this is not the only means of raising capital. SAFEs and convertible notes are an alternative way for your startup to raise funds and can have several advantages.

This week on Subtitles On we will explain the features, similarities and key differences between a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity) and a Convertible Note

  • Women are underrepresented; they are excluded from starting businesses, running companies, and from being appointed to the board of directors. We are not ok with this. Sure, there are many factors at play (not least the continuing unconscious bias of society towards women) but we think that language and confidence have a big part to play.

So subscribe to our weekly podcast where we hope to change the world one conversation at the time. Listen to us break down the jargon and make the start-up world more inclusive. Each week, we will chat about a different topic, everything from setting up a company, to getting money from investors, to selling your company.
