My name is Shana Epps and I am the CEO and founder of Controlled Chaos where I do sobriety and life coaching and host a podcast. I tried for almost two decades to get sober but kept relapsing. Even while working in the girls and trying to raise my daughters alone. I went through bad relationships, drug addiction, and alcoholism. I finally decided to move back to my home town and get my life together. The 12 steps are a huge part of my recovery but I also used the vivitrol shot. The vivitrol shot was a game changer for me. The last almost 3 years have been amazing and my goal from here on is just to help as many women as I can.

  • Host: DrifterGuest: Horseman Horseman is from the rural countryside located in the rainbow nation, South Africa. He has been married to the same beautiful girl, that still loves him, after more than forty four years. They have three grown up children, four grandchildren, a Labrador dog and a few chickens that scratch in the back yard. He lost most of his hearing when he was five years old due to a freak accident at home. He experienced bullying and ridiculing as a young child because he attended a public school. His father encouraged him, due to these circumstances, to learn the martial art of karate, that resulted in him he being qualified as a young, teenage instructor, teaching others to fight. He can fortunately hear much better now, due to wireless technology for profound deafness. Another hobby that shaped him as a young person was when he learned to ride horses. His IAS pseudonym is therefore based on his love and strong relationship with these special animals. He actually wanted to be an expert with animals like horses, but ended up as a specialist with digital machines. He was part of a musical family that helped him to become a proficient classic and blues guitar player - obviously he often turns the volume up, far too loud!He started having drinking issues during his professional career as an international ICT Consultant. The corporate life, job pressure, travel, etc. caused him to gradually slip down the alcohol pitcher plant, while acting as a fully functional expert across the world. In spite of this he managed to protect his marriage but in the end he decided to quit his ICT career ambitions for the sake of his family. Horseman is known for this motto: Love never fails 🌾His life and recovery is based on Christian teachings - scriptures like 1 Corinthians 13:8 fascinated him. Horseman learned long ago that love is that one, most profound thing that can conquer any obstacle. So, although he admits that he made many mistakes he always practiced this motto to the best of his ability - both in his work and his personal life. Finally, he is currently doing part time studying, in order to become a certified counselor / therapist. He is still an active member on the I Am Sober (IAS) App, paying back for everything he learned in that arena since 7th of April, 2020, when he joined. He has learned that the only person he can change, is himself. "I just don't need this in my life anymore and I want to try something new...." -Thank you Drifter.

  • Nancy Newton BioNancy was born in Houston, Texas, and was a Physical Therapist turned stay at home Mom who dabbled in her Catholic church Music Ministry for a time as she was raising her 3 children. When she returned to her job as a PT at the age of 46 after a 9-year hiatus, she began her long painful descent into the slow process of becoming addicted to alcohol. This descent included a resurgence of a food/exercise addiction that she had struggled with most of her life from the early teen years but was able to recover from when she found her way into the rooms of Overeaters Anonymous in her 30’s, her first exposure to a 12-step program. This progressed in her 50’s to more regular drinking, and by the time she was in her late 50’s and early 60’s, a full-on addiction to a daily intake of alcohol which often included a full bottle of wine or 2 very strong frozen margaritas from the local Mexican food restaurant, and perhaps some additional topping off to get through the day. She also relapsed into her binging/starving/overexercising addiction until she was 50+ pounds heavier and suffering from extreme depression, lack of motivation and the desire to socially isolate, inability to sleep and the need for increased anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medicines to cope. There were multiple attempts to quit alcohol and food abuse, trying therapy and even walking through the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous. These attempts were in vain until one day she discovered The Naked Mind book by Annie Grace. On August 4, 2022, she began her journey into sobriety. On the Naked Mind website she found the information that led her to the Thursday am early doors Sobertown Zoom meetings. (Thank you, Fluffy All Heart!!!) Getting out of isolation and reconnecting to others in those sessions allowed her to find the strength and courage to take the necessary steps to get sober. She now is 19 months sober and embarking on a new life after slowly beginning to implement the tools she found necessary to her sobriety. These tools include daily Yoga, meditation, inspirational music, reading, cardiovascular exercise, healthy eating, Sobertown Zoom meetings, and reestablishing or finding new ways to connect to others. These tools allow her to go through life more mindfully, cherishing the relationships between family and friends and understanding the real meaning and purpose for her life. In November, after a return home from a trip to Spain, she was painfully aware of her longstanding tendency to set goals and reach them while not at all being mindful or enjoying the process. It became a real source of frustration for her and the main topic of discussion in a therapy session. There, her therapist of many years, introduced her to Kirtana and the Deathbed song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1khh5AHacgUThis one song began some new insights into how she would begin to make the necessary changes in the last quarter of her life so that she would not miss out on any of the “holy” moments that give life meaning for her: Connection to others, Courage to step out of her comfort zones, Calmness and moving more slowly through her day, and following through on all Commitments she makes to others. This has become a daily practice as she starts each day. She hopes that her story of her journey will inspire others to hang in there through the process of becoming sober. Change can be slow, and it is so important to look at this process as an unfolding of possibilities that will continue to move in a forward direction, if you commit to staying on the path. It is worth every bit of grit and determination that is required. Nancy is retired, and currently lives with her wonderful husband of 40 years in McKinney Texas.

    Life Story

Kevin Beaufrand's life story is a compelling narrative of overcoming adversity through resilience and transformation. Tragedy struck early when he lost his father at the age of 11, leading him into a dark period of panic attacks and suicidal thoughts. By 13, Kevin found temporary solace in alcohol, marking the start of an 18-year nightmare filled with lies, vomiting, self resentment, and substance abuse that included alcohol, weed, cocaine, and a battle with rhabdomyolysis due to a dangerous mix of overexercising, alcohol, and cocaine. Despite these challenges, including significant personal losses and a near-fatal car crash, Kevin's turning point came at 30 when he sought help and went to rehab. Although he faced relapse, it was at 31 that he found lasting sobriety.

Kevin's journey is not just about his battles with addiction but also about his profound personal growth and the discovery of his purpose. His transformation was fueled by a commitment to sobriety and health, leading him to not only reclaim his life but also to found Soberflex. This platform is Kevin's way of sharing his journey, health expertise, and the lessons learned, offering support and guidance to others facing similar struggles. His story is a testament to the power of embracing one's past to fuel a future filled with purpose, success, and well-being. Through Soberflex, Kevin aims to empower others in recovery, helping them develop repeatable strategies for long-term health and genuine success.

This episode came about organically and was completely unplanned, but it aligned perfectly with the previous Early Days episode! In it, I'm sharing about active cravings I'm experiencing the day of recording in an effort to reach others who are experiencing similar feelings, and perhaps help them take a little encouragement from not being alone in those.

In this episode of Early Days, I'll be talking about cravings: what are they, what causes them, and what we can do to resist them. Cravings can feel like a hopeless obstacle in early sobriety when we haven't yet learned other coping mechanisms besides turning to our drug of choice, but there is hope! Please join me while I provide a few possibilities.

No two recovery journeys look the same, but one nearly universal truth is that connection with others in recovery can make the experience smoother, easier, and dare I say it, even fun! The goal of the Early Days podcast is to identify some of the common themes and issues that come up around early sobriety to provide a sense of connection, break down the walls of loneliness, demystify confusing topics and laugh about the outright silly ones! Together let's seek the comfort to be found in sharing the burdens we all bear during The Early Days.

Hi my name is Melissa Hubenak. I am a 41 year old mother of three amazing sons. I am also a widow. I began this recovery journey on June 28th of 2021. My childhood was full of trauma including physical mental emotional and sexual abuse. Both my parents were Alcoholic addicts. But I never thought that it was the reason I used drugs and alcohol. Growing up I partied because I thought it was fun. I loved experimenting and out drinking everyone at a party. I broke my back the summer before my senior year. That is how I learned about addiction from an addicts perspective. The best drug dealer I would ever know was my doctor. My addiction would follow me overseas where by the age of 21 I was prescribed fentanyl patches and oxycontin. My first blessing came in the form of a felony charge. The judge sentenced me to probation and a methadone maintenance clinic. This would not be the first time my felonies would turn into a blessing because of an Angel disguised as a judge. I eventually married the love of my life. We had three beautiful boys. That maintenance program gave the ability to have a normal life. Things were great until my husband was diagnosed with brain cancer. In 2018 he passed away. And two weeks later I lost my cousin to murder by fentanyl. I died with them. The stay at home wife and mother became a homeless, drug addicted felon. Today I have a home, a car, a job, and most importantly my children back. I couldn’t be more grateful. Today I have Faith that is unshakable because of a God that is all powerful. Desperation led me to surrender. God met me where I was at. He placed angels all around me. I tell people all the time, “I am living in the midst of prayers answered and dreams come true. I have such a beautiful life.” I am lucky enough to have a job helping others working in mental health. I recently finished training to become a recovery coach. Which I can't wait to apply to my goals of helping those seeking to restore their life. The biggest gift I have been given is the opportunity to open a sober living with my best friend as my partner. We were given two properties and are building a network of resources to offer the best support possible for the persons that come to us for help. I had no idea that day, in summer of 2021, would lead me on an adventure like this. The good times are amazing and the bad times just aren’t as bad. Today I live in the moment. Embrace every opportunity. Love Hard. Fight Hard. And I have never been so High. I hope you have a GREAT DAY ON PURPOSE. FRESH BLESSING. MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT. WE DO RECOVER!!

    Guest: Michal aka MMC13

Michal aka MMC13 lives in Albuquerque New Mexico with her houseful of 4-legged family. She's an avid animal rescuer and transport driver. Her history with addiction started in her early teens, and her recovery journey began in her late 20s. She's a firm believer that connection beats addiction, there's no such thing as a one size fits all recovery program, and that recovery is not linear, and she strives to spread those messages to anyone who may benefit from hearing them.

Podcast summary: Michal's recovery journey has not been linear, and although she's been in and around recovery for 16 years, she's had some detours along the way. In this episode, Michal aka MMC13 and Drifter dive into some of the things that may push a person with extensive consecutive sobriety to decide to try drinking again. Michal shares about the headspace she was in, some of the triggers she faced, and what she's trying to do differently this time. This is the pilot episode in an ongoing series which will follow Michal's journey and specifically examine the struggles and successes she experiences along the way.

My name is Pollya. 31/2 years ago, I opened the door to a new and better life, a sober life. During these last 3 1/2 years I have learnt to manage my life and deal with my emotions on a daily basis without alcohol but with the loving and supportive sober communities in IAS and Sobertown. Two years into my sobriety, I lost my husband of 19 years Daniel. I have navigated the hard journey of grief without my crutch, alcohol, so honoring his memory. I have learned that life after alcohol is filled with memorable moments. Moments I remember and take great joy in. I have traveled extensively to Australia, Alaska, various parts of the USA smiling all the while. I recently moved from the USA back to the UK and making yet another life for myself. My life is full of family, sober friends, future travel plans and just the sheer joy of waking up in a state of freedom.

FU alcohol and No Sippy No slippy. I need to live!!
