  • This episode was inspired by the idea of 'interviewing as an ally'.

Robert Darfi is another podcasters who describes himself as the "least diverse person around," and in the episode, Fran flips the microphone on him to explore how podcasts can be a powerful tool for activism...

  • We are back with an exciting panel discussion, and Fran is learning all about the Cycling World Championships that took place in Scotland in August.

You'd be forgiven for almost missing this event (and we talk about why that might be the case) but I am joined by a panel of guests including Neil Russell, the managing director of the Adaptive Riders Collective, Vedangi Kulkarni, an endurance cyclist and adventurer, and Aoife Glass, a mountain bike journalist and host of the Spindrift podcast.

They help me learn more about the event, and we discuss many aspects such as the accessibility considerations, the integration of para-events, the chaos of a 'Madison relay race' and road closures.

We also touch on the issues with visas for some athletes and the UCI's policy change on the participation of transgender athletes. This is a jam-packed episode, with chat on both cycling and the social and political issues surrounding such big events.

Aoife Glass is on Instagram @aoife_glass and listen to Spindrift here >>

Neil Russel is on Instagram @handcycle_adventures and find links to the film and fundraising, and support ARC here >>

We want to hear from YOU 🫵 This episode was a whirlwind tour and we didn't have the time or expertise to go into some big aspects. But if you have opinions or views on anything we discussed, we'd love to hear from you!

  • In this episode, our guest host Kathi Kamleitner speaks to Zahrah Mahmood and Ani Barber about specialist, accessible and inclusive outdoor equipment, starting with a look at the activewear hijab that Zahrah has created with Berghaus. We also talk about the risk of misappropriating an item of religious outdoor equipment, other types of specialist equipment including items to help people pee, toddler carriers for hiking, helpful clothing for difficulties with motor-skills and sun protection.

We opened up this conversation to our listeners with these questions:

Have you used activewear hijab or modest swimwear? Is there any other adaptive or special equipment you’ve used outdoors and what is you experience? Is there anything that’s not been made yet that you would like to see?

  • Another Tremula Network show, The Everyday Adventure Podcast hosted by Nicki Bass, has been shortlisted in the Wilderness Category of the Sports Podcast Awards 2023. Out of twelve podcasts shortlisted in this category, The Everyday Adventure podcast is one of only three podcasts with a women hosting/co-hosting shortlisted in the Wilderness category, one of only three UK-based shows, and it is the only show that mentions diversity and inclusivity in its description or 'why they should win' section. This goes to show the unbalance of podcasts in the outdoors and wilderness category. This is why representation and inclusivity are a core value of the Tremula Network.

We are passionate about opening up the outdoors to communities who are under-represented in this space and the podcast will continue to elevate stories from individuals and organisations who seek to overcome these barriers and change perceptions of what is possible.

In this episode you'll hear snippets from the three incredible women whose clips Nicki used for the entry:

Keri Wallace from Girls On Hills, Pammy Johal of Backbone CIC and Antarctic explorer and record-maker Preet Chandi.

Voting for the Sports Podcast Awards is open and the winning podcast will be selected by popular vote. If you have a spare 5 minutes, we would be incredibly grateful!

    HOW TO VOTE FOR US:

Anyone and everyone can cast a vote BUT you have to be logged in to vote – this means you need to create an account :(

  • The Kendal Mountain Festival national tour began last week and I thought the start of the tour would be a good chance for me to catch up on our Kendal coverage.

I could not make it to Kendal in November myself, but I managed to convince a panelist you know quite well to represent the podcast. In a moment you will hear the post-festival conversation I had with her, plus she asked a number of different people the same three questions:

  • If you listened to the episode on the anniversary of the Kinder Scout Trespass, and our chat about the right to roam, this episode will be of interest to you. Until recently, Dartmoor National Park in the South West of England was the only place in England where it was legal to wild camp without permission from landowners. But on 13th January 2023, a High Court judgement ruled that wild camping is no longer legal on any Dartmoor land without the permission of the land owner.

This crossover episode shares a conversation from the Summit To Talk About podcast.

Ryan Dodge-Cooke (host of Summit To Talk About) and Mark (aka @MullionVagrant on Instagram) discuss the recent High Court judgement, who it affects, what the implications are for Right To Roam across England, and what the next steps are for campaigners fighting the judgement.

Thank you to Ryan for letting us share this episode on our feed.

  • It's time to talk about money in the outdoor sector. I know there are individuals and groups having these conversations on a case-by-case level. We decided not to talk about this on the podcast until now because we didn’t want to be outing individual experiences with payment.

But in August, Matt Barr from the Looking Sideways podcast posted this:

Open Thread: is it ever OK for brands not to pay creatives or contributors fairly for their time and expertise?

And Matt and Soraya had a chat on Looking Sideways that spoke in part about money.

In this episode, I ask Matt more about the catalyst for posting that thread, and we pick apart the question itself. After our chat, you’ll hear some of the Looking Sideways podcast and then several talking heads.

  • In this episode, Francesca is joined by Soraya Abdel-Hadi from All The Elements, and Carlos Casas of Colour Up Bristol, to talk about a London climbing centre banning topless climbing. this conversation was inspired by an Instagram post by Scottish Climber Robbie Phillips. See the post yourself here:

We share our own thoughts on topless climbing/culture, toxic masculinaty in climbing gyms, whether the top-off ban is justified, and other possible solutions to make climbing centres more welcoming.
