  • On episode 394 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Josie Tate, MSN, CRNP, FNP-C, a successful family nurse practitioner and inspirational NP career mentor. In the course of their spirited discussion, Keith and Josie discuss the awareness and mindset it takes to level up from RN to NP; how subtle shifts impact success; overcoming Impostor Syndrome; and how to thrive in and out of clinical practice.
Josie Tate is a family nurse practitioner and career mentor with a heart to see others succeed. Since starting her nursing journey with a BSN in 2006, her most memorable times include being a preceptor to nursing students and mentor to newly hired employees.
Soon after becoming a nurse practitioner in 2018, she saw new NPs experience a disconnect between obtaining an advanced degree and embracing the role of advanced practice provider. To bridge that gap, she created Clincepts, a mentoring resource to help nurse practitioners get happily hired.
As a nurse leader, Josie empowers nurse practitioners to start their career endeavors encouraged and equipped to start their search and seal the deal to their ideal NP job. Clincepts at its core strives to be the much needed support structure that elevates advanced practice nurses to thrive both in and out practice.
Josie is also passionate about her life outside of practice. Her favorite roles are wife to her college sweetheart and mom to their three fun-filled kids. In her spare time, you can catch her completing a home decor project or reading a self-development book.

  • In this podcast, Karen and Antra sit down with Zach Smith, a nurse entrepreneur based out of Oregon. They run the gamut in this conversation, covering the early struggles that Zach encountered in his early career. This includes the fractured methods used to pathwork together a preceptorship, feeling like you’re not fitting in, the animosity you can be faced with when you dare to ask a physician a question, to ultimately finding his nursing niche in mental health.
The conversation then dives into the pitfalls that exist in the current nursing school world. Nurses are woefully prepared for the real world, and the discussion touches on the high attrition rates seen in new nurses within the 2 years of them graduating school. They discuss the fact that nurses use so little of what they learn in school and the fact that institutions don’t connect nurses to enough of the real world of healthcare for them to be successful.
Furthermore, the ambitious entrepreneur takes us through his work on a nurse-focused scheduling app that eventually was sold to a large enterprise, to his huge ambitions of changing the way that hospitals are accredited with a patient and staff focused approach.

  • On episode 392 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Cheryl Peterson, MSN, RN, Vice President for Nursing Programs at the American Nurses Association (ANA). In the course of their conversation, Keith and Cheryl discuss the role of professional nursing associations in this day and age, and how these associations can be leveraged in terms of the big issues of our day (e.g.: climate change, racism, and the challenges of safe staffing). Nursing associations like the ANA can’t do it alone, so Keith and Cheryl dive into the question of how to involve groups and individuals who are willing to embrace being stakeholders and engaging in collective action for the greater good.
In her role as VP for Nursing Programs at the ANA, Ms. Peterson is responsible for guiding ANA’s Department of Nursing Practice and Work Environment, the Center for Ethics and Human Rights, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Minority Fellowship Program and ANA’s signature initiative, Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation™. Each of these areas contribute to advancing ANA’s strategic nursing practice efforts designed to meet the association’s vision of a healthy world through the power of nursing.
Since coming to the ANA in 1990, Ms. Peterson has developed significant expertise in addressing a myriad of nursing and health issues through the application of practice and policy development strategies and strategic advocacy efforts. She has policy expertise in the areas of nursing workforce development, immigration and trade, occupational safety and health, and health system transformation. Ms. Peterson also serves as ANA’s principal liaison to the International Council of Nurses.

  • During the summer of 2022, SEE YOU NOW has been on the road meeting new ideas and people and sharing stories about what we’ve experienced in a wide range of healthcare encounters. In this episode we invite you join us at the Aspen Ideas: Health conference.
Aspen’s 60+ sessions are designed to engage a broad audience in the issues that shape our lives, challenge our times, and introduce us to leaders and ideas that chart pathways toward better health for all. Building on the understanding that reliable, safe, quality healthcare for all depends on a well-trained, energetic, and abundant workforce, the health and wellbeing of clinicians took center stage at Aspen. Despite schools of nursing, medicine, and public health attracting record numbers of qualified applicants, many highly trained health professionals are leaving the field. In this lively panel discussion led by physician and former NYC Health commissioner Dave Chokshi, MD, seasoned clinicians Sandra Lindsay, RN, MBA, Adrian Billings, MD and Siobhan Wescott, MD MPH speak candidly about the exhaustion, debt, and moral injury plaguing the healthcare workforce; the political, financial, and workforce solutions they advocate for; and in spite of -- or because of -- the numerous system-level challenges, why working in healthcare remains a rewarding and promising career choice

  • To close out season 5 of The Handoff we’re actually welcoming back a repeat visitor to the show. Dani Bowie joined us last season to talk about scheduling and staffing, and since that conversation, she’s actually joined the team at Trusted Health as their Vice President of Clinical Strategy & Transformation, where she’s helping health systems transform their nursing workforce programs.

We’re very happy to welcome her back to the show today to talk about a topic that is very close to both our hearts: nurse mental health. For the third year in a row, Trusted Health is releasing its annual survey on frontline nurse mental health and well-being and Dani and Dan talked about the findings, as well as her thoughts on what the nurse leaders, hospitals and the industry as a whole can do to address the issues raised.

  • In this week’s episode, I am joined by Tara Brandner, a nurse practitioner and infertility “warrior” turned full-time fertility coach. She’s spent the past decade pursuing nursing including a master’s and doctorate degree. She endured a long road through infertility followed by infertility treatments and a traumatic pregnancy.
After experiencing a long road through infertility, she decided she wanted to help couples in their journey to grow their family. Through her experiences as a healthcare professional and personal struggle with infertility, she recognized there are large gaps of care for women and couples struggling with infertility. She chose to change paths to provide a full suite of coaching services and support for those struggling to build their family.
Tara shares her story of infertility, and how her own experience has led to advocating for change after being on the other side of the system. We discuss how she helps patients take back control of their healthcare, the mental health component of infertility, why women aren’t talking about their own struggles in this space, and what can be done in healthcare to help those going through these experiences.

Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:

What gaps in the healthcare system Tara noticed from being on the other side

How to begin advocating for what you are passionate about

Why women aren’t talking about infertility and how we can change the stigma

What patients can do to take back control of their healthcare
