  • Sculptor Dan Lam shares meaningful insights she’s learned while building her career as a full-time artist. From developing vibrant, drippy sculptures to securing major exhibitions and building an international following on social media, Dan continues to show us what's possible.

    Here’s what we discuss:

    1. How Dan’s work evolved from painting to sculpture, and what helped her to develop her artistic voice.

    2. The moment Dan knew it was time to take a leap of faith and pursue an art career full-time.

    3. Why it's so important to create without judgment and to continue trusting yourself.

    About Dan -

Instagram sensation Dan Lam’s tactile, technicolor sculptures use unconventional materials to playfully tread a line between allure and repulsion. Made of painted polyurethane foam and often covered in spikes, her blob-like pieces that appear to melt and drip have brought Lam hordes of social media fans. Lam began experimenting with the possibilities of foam after receiving her MFA from Arizona State University, and she has continued to test its limits by scaling up. While her pieces appear otherworldly, Lam steadily draws inspiration from the everyday, taking cues from nature and the human body.

  • Canadian painter Kim Dorland has gained international recognition for his paintings of suburbia with notable exhibitions at galleries in New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto, London and beyond. In this enlightening episode, Kim shares valuable lessons he’s learned while building his art career. Here’s what we discuss:

    1. What inspired Kim to pursue a career as a painter and depict his own personal experiences.

    2. How Kim tackles self doubt in the studio and why he considers failure to be an essential part of the process.

    3. Kim’s advice for emerging artists who are at the very beginning of their art careers.

    About Kim -

Kim Dorland pushes the boundaries of painted representation through an exploration of memory, material, nostalgia, identity and place. Drawing heavily from the Canadian landscape and his huge appetite for the history and language of painting, the loose yet identifiable scenes are interjected with areas of heavy abstract impasto. His refusal to remain faithful to one medium or approach plays into the symbiotic nature of his work.

Born in 1974 in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada, Dorland holds an MFA from York University in Toronto, and a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, in Vancouver. He has exhibited globally, including shows in Milan, London, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. His work is featured in the Contemporary Art Foundation (Japan), The Sander Collection (Berlin); Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal; Glenbow Museum (Calgary); Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Art Gallery of Alberta, the Audain Art Museum and numerous important private collections. Dorland currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Juan Arango Palacios was born in Pereira, Colombia, and was raised in a traditional Catholic home. His traditional upbringing was cut short by a series of migrations that their family took seeking a better future. Juan’s family moved from Colombia to southern Louisiana where Juan’s sense of identity and belonging began to be skewed by their lack of knowledge of the English language, their unfamiliarity with American culture, and their internal struggle with a queer identity. Juan graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2020, and has a painting, textile-making, and sculpture practice based in Chicago. Placing emphasis on color and composition, Juan’s work aims to create images and narratives glorifying and fantasizing the idea of safety and joy in a queer experience.

  • Join us for a powerful episode with visual artist Laura Cleary Williams. We engage in an honest conversation about art, mental health, and the role of vulnerability in our creative work.

Trigger Warning: This episode includes a discussion about suicide. If you are feeling suicidal, thinking about hurting yourself, or are concerned that someone you know may be in danger of hurting himself or herself, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.

    Here’s what we discuss:

    1. Laura’s experience as a printmaker and the ways in which printmaking continues to influence her work today.

    2. Why Laura’s first love will always be drawing, and the ways in which she expresses herself through mark-making on paper.

    3. Laura’s journey with mental health and the life-changing experience that profoundly impacted her both personally and creatively.

    4. The importance of community and cultivating connections with fellow artists.

    About Laura -

Williams’s abstract spaces are an ode to an imperfect language. Through motion, she makes marks that translate thought - subconscious – a viscerally understood language. Williams works from her hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2009, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Next, Williams received a full scholarship to complete her Master's in Printmaking in 2012 at SCAD-Atlanta.

Williams worked at SCAD‘s Southeastern Center for Printmaking. There, she worked on an ambitious print collection with Kiki Smith and Valerie Hammond. Initially working as an assistant printer, Williams was indispensable to the project and was promoted to assistant project manager. On the heels of this project, Williams founded, managed, and co-owned Straw Hat Press, which specialized in fine art publishing and contract printing. As Straw Hat flourished, Williams realized that despite her success in printmaking, she would always be devoted to her love of drawing. Subsequently, she left Atlanta and returned to her hometown to pursue her career as a gallery artist, where her career soared.

In 2022 and 2023, Williams exhibited with PXP Contemporary, Viridian Artists, Van Der Plas Gallery, and the New York Equity Association in NYC. She was the first exhibition and solo at Good Art Co. in South Carolina. She was an artist in residence with Carrie Able Gallery and asked to return for a solo exhibition in the Spring of 2024, when she will also be an artist in residence at Chateau d’Orquevaux in France.
