  • Sumiya Khan, RD was recently on during our Where Are They Now series, and this is her original story from Season 2, in case you haven't heard it or don't know how to find it on your podcast app.

She shared her devastating loss and was on the path to overcoming it at the time of this recording. Her advice on the do’s and don'ts during grieving are golden and should be printed for general public use! She’s truly a model of resilience, and since like-minded folks get together, Sanctuary Kitchen was [is] her passion, outlet, and work empowering refugees. We look forward to her supportive endeavors in Muslim bereavement based on her personal experience. Trigger warning: If you've experienced profound personal loss, you may not be prepared for this.

As a role model for all, she lives life outside the box in her work and at home, showing us that through and in grief are opportunities for our growth and sanctuary. Make duaa for our sisters across oceans who have had their love stories cut abruptly due to siege and assault that was 100% manmade and 100% avoidable. Tune in at 6pm EST and share with a momsister who is working to increase her gratitude this blessed month.

  • Thirteen thousand children and counting....and as you heard on our hiatus announcement, at home, moms are losing their kids, too, to the continued shock of the community. Why are we so shocked? Are we untouchable, above grief and trials from Allah? No, He's promised them to us, and we pray to pass all those tests. Ameen.

One of the moms who came on before is our beloved teammate, Saira Sufi, who even recently moved us to tears at our gala when she shared the story of her son, Hadi. She is our role model, who embodies beautiful patience and imaan while facing what we can only imagine is lifelong grief. Despite losses that we would describe as "crushing," she crushed them, and instead has built a legacy for Hadi that will make those of us who never met him, truly regretful.

This may be a triggering episode for anyone who has suffered immense loss and grief, so maybe listen in a group so you can support each other through this episode. Remember to pray for our sisters and families abroad who are waking up every day to the wrenching reality of an unalived child or relative. Their grief is so tragic because it was 100% manmade and 100% avoidable.

Also, let’s never forget to support medical research and to join minority blood registries in case we can ever help another family avoid illness and loss. This episode is for every mom, sibling, and family who’s ever experienced the loss of a child, and we pray for their continued healing and reward with Allah SWT. Ameen.

  • Zaiba and Uzma discussed how they faced the biggest "mommying challenges" during Ramadan 2019, and how they break us and make us. In light of the current siege in G@z@, we feel broken indeed and for that reason look forward to Ramadan.

We were inspired to replay this due a recent post by @drhanaa,peacewithinhome, because the ummah is sharing survivors' guilt while our brothers and sisters suffer across the world because of our tax dollars. Everything sticks in our throats where our rage and tears are balled up, but her recent post about how to explain this Ramadan to our kids is key, and this episode is a reminder of the lengths we have gone to in the past for our families in Ramadan. This year, the stakes are higher. Oh, Allah, You are The One Who forgives greatly, and loves to forgive, so forgive us. (Tirmidhi).

And let this be the Ramadan that brings forgiveness, mercy, and peace to the ones who need it most. Allahuma ameen. Tune in at 6pm EST and share with a momsister who also can't remember the excitement of this most beloved guest of the year, Ramadan.

  • We are still recovering from this past weekend’s Eman Entrepreneur Expo and Empower & Elevate Gala. Thank you to all who participated, attended, donated, and supported in all the ways that matter. But who knew two events in one day would be this exhausting?

Jokes aside, we are blessed to do the work we do, but full steam ahead since 10/7 has left us little to contribute to our own households of late, namely, those who gave us the credentials we value the most: M.O.M.

We want to continue our activism but rest, reset, and reconnect with our kids during Ramadan right around the corner. So while you might catch a story or two, we will be on both social media and new episode recording fasts until April. We will be back insha’Allah with the best version of ourselves that y’all deserve. Right now, our kids and our mom hearts need each other.

Tune in at 6pm EST to hear the announcement, and every Thursday this March for replays of past guests sure to help you stay in sajdah a little longer. Worked for us! We hope to see y’all back in April insha'Allah.

  • If this month's series title scared you, we can imagine today's episode title will, too. Rest assured, we have very tame info for everyone. In fact, it's info meant to help tame the problems we think are really big and we have all to ourselves, when, in fact, many people suffer silently with the same. And silence helps NO ONE. Getting control in the bedroom is everyone's right.

We've talked pathology all month, so let's talk about practical equipment to help with some of those physical changes with time. What we use to get control CAN be used for kink, but it's not all about that at all. Drop your judgements at the door and grab your headphones for this one--not for easy listening while you're at the park with the kiddos!

Tune in at 6pm EST and share this episode with your mom, sister, and daughters, as well as the men in your life who you love.

DMW we can't wait to see you this Saturday 2-24-24!

  • "Name it to tame it," as Zaiba likes to say on the podcast and today, she has to DO IT! We don't say "hooha" anymore after this episode because we learn the correct anatomical terms for female external genitalia and the pathologies that affect it.

Dr. Sadaf Lodhi OBGYN is on today to provide medical insight, sex coaching, and a good dose of hope to those women and moms who've given up on the idea of ever enjoying sex again (if they ever did at all!). It's time to drop our cultural baggage and embrace kink and control in the bedroom. Our favorite word after this episode is "sensate" and we'd love to hear what yours is after!

While she dives into vaginismus, she also dispels hymen mythology, and teaches us about female Viagra. Yes, there is such a thing, so tune in to hear all about it and don't be ashamed, those gents who listen to us, to send it to your partners you think might need it! • We kick off our February series with the theme: Kink & Control in the Bedroom. Who better to teach us control there than Dr. Neda, NP, who joins us today to talk about sex during early conjugal relations in Muslim American bedroom life, and in later phases. While she’s better known as @hijabiluscious, her professional career has her taking care of people and their health needs first. And sex is a vital health need, as well as a marker of good health.

Body autonomy is something near and dear to her, and she takes it a notch up by teaching us how to keep those luscious bodies autonomous and satisfied once they’re participating more often (emphasis on “often”) in sexual activities. Find out how to troubleshoot what’s not feeling right and more importantly, how to talk to both your doctor and partner about it.

Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or head to our website landing page to listen up. Share this with a shy guy or girl in your life who also had to sit out sex ed because their parent(s) didn’t want them to “get any ideas.”

  • Dr. Maytha Al Hassen from the team at ‘Ramy’ is BACK to talk about the media shift that MAY BE happening as a result of mainstream being called out (finally!) for yellow journalism that vilifies Arabs and Muslims (at least this time in history). The Golden Globes just happened, so what about narrative shifts in entertainment media? Listen up, Hollywood!

Ignore Uzma’s doom and gloom, and pay attention to Dr. Al Hassen’s takes on social justice influencers and events that may compel narrative media changes, and those that may continue to quell it. This conversation is sure to ignite some cerebral sparks, so put your smarty hats on!

  • Our Muslim Moms and the News Series this month is an offshoot of our series of a similar bent from 2021. Sadly we aren't saying anything different this time around.

In this replay, Zaiba and Uzma cite past big headlines that affected their physical and mental safety. Ask yourself how news coverage would have been different, and HAS been different for non-Muslims suspects. When do Muslim Americans hold their collective breaths and why? And how is it all the same now?

Our expectations from media coverage must be higher and the biases of news coverage, because it endangers affected people, must be held to account., News coverage, and now social media coverage, result in perpetual Muslim grief. But only one of them is trying to undo oppression, while the other is a tool of it. Let's work together to prevent and punish dissemination of Islamophobic news coverage.

There’s slamming of our hands on the table so watch your ears. We apologize! Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, or head to our website to listen.

  • For those of you who are counting on news from the ground in Gaza, you know and follow journalist Leali Shalabi who consistently provides daily 24-hour newscaps from Gaza. She’s not only sharing her process and commitment to covering Palestine, her insights into being a Palestinian American are mind blowing for us. We’re never too old or too proud to learn something new alhamdulillah.
There’s been a lot of discussion about how Gen Z is changing the conversation on Palestine through social media. Hearing it from a Gen Z trained journalist who is also on social media to provide accurate information we can’t otherwise get from mainstream media means a lot to us. It’s changed the language we are used to media using, as well as the news coverage being shared. As we say on the podcast, we have never been able to speak so openly on Palestine before 2023, and we really think social media has a lot to do with this. How is mainstream media falling in line and how is it not?
The tides have turned, as the ICJ trial today proves, and we credit the new language of media fueled by the visual story of Palestine and thank journalists by choice as well as the journalists doing it under duress directly in the line of fire. We pray for their protection, reward, and freedom, as well as for justice on the world stage today. Allahuma ameen.

  • We want to credit @trtworld for its article "What's it's like to be a parent in Gaza" that informs today’s episode. This is an older article from late October 2023, but it's awful how 90 days seems ages ago when we are talking about tens of thousands of unalived humans. It's critical to share the stories of 🍉's when many in the world, and in our own country, still think it's okay to dehumanize people. This is the way they've been able to justify politicizing "ceasefire" when as moms, we know it's the only way to keep ALL our children safe.

This month's series is Muslim Moms in the Media, discussing our hope that the misinformation and disinformation campaigns that assume we are all too stupid to look things up are seeing their days numbered. May it be so Allahum ameen. Criticism is not racism when we question actions, not beliefs. Join us this month as we follow the narrative and fact finding changes that have come with the democratization of information, but how to do it responsibly, and humanely. The time to humanize Black and Brown bodies was yesterday, but we know we can catch up God willing.

  • Mariam Muhanna comes on today with experience both working and living as an expat in Gaza for several years prior to coming back to the United States. Hear about her day to day experiences and why she wants to go back. Also remember to pray for her many immediate family members who have been killed within the last 80 plus days. May Allah SWT reunite them all in Jannah (Heaven). Ameen.
We get some insight into how Gazans are deeply affected by any losses in a tight community, but it’s still unimaginable. It’s a crime to dehumanize this place and its population in the ways the media and those in power have done, and we’re more than humbled to have Palestinian voices on our podcast to affirm the humanity of all people. We’re pretty sure, like us, you’ll want to go there one day to feel the beauty of the land and its people. May it be a reality soon insha’Allah.

  • Vice President of Operations at Pillars Fund Kalia Abiade. Pillars Fund is dedicated to empowerment and support of Muslim voices. We know that Muslims have plenty of voices, but no one to hear them and no mainstream platform where they’ll be taken seriously without having to first perform someone else’s self-righteous qualifier.

Kalia was in Palestine tracing her family history when October 7th happened. Her chilling experience to get home is still being written in her heart and mind, and we pray she can make sense of what happened there. As we all are since. Connect all resistance movements with Black America, press accountability, and how to talk to our kids about oppression are packed in here.

In addition, as someone genetically endowed to lead social justice movements, Kalia shares the humanity of Palestine as well as the atrocities of occupation she witnessed before 10/7 to provide context of what that attack meant for all oppressed people. Her quiet wisdom is critical in considering our roles against all injustice, and to maintain humility while doing it.

  • Decorated Educator Dr. Sawsan Jaber comes on to discuss how our students are dehumanized in schools through curricula, bullying, and well intentioned harm created by school districts who create environments of “invisible” Palestinian and other Arab students at a critical juncture in their and our collective histories. While media violence is definitely at play in making Arab and Muslim students unsafe on campuses, educational violence is also taking place. As she told us after the recording, every Representative, every Senator, every President was once in school, so education can certainly make a difference in how they understand and legislate and conduct foreign policy. 🎤

Despite the multitude of harms our students encounter in schools as their Palestinian identities are retold for them, Dr Jaber identifies several action items for us to rectify it. This is certainly an episode where we can make change happen right after we turn off the episode insha’Allah, so don’t miss the opportunity! 💬

  • Zaiba & Uzma come on today to not only endorse that podcasting kicks a$$, but that they do, too. A far cry from where they started 5 years ago with imposter syndrome and trying to do it all, to where they are now and what’s cooking for the future at Mommying While Muslim.

Find out about next month’s very important series: All About Palestine, to their new nonprofit, and why 2-24-24 needs to be circled in RED on your calendars. If you want to be on next month’s series or participate in the Expo 2024, email us NOW at [email protected].

  • Mindful Muslimah joins us today because listeners of her podcast of the same name may believe, “Oh my God, she does it all!” From homeschooling, to cooking with multiple aged kids with multiple food issues, to running businesses and teaching, she has her hands in everything. How DOES she do it all?

As our title suggests, she doesn't do it all…at once. And definitely not without her secret sauce, which she describes during the course of this episode. Moms in all stages of mommying should tune in, but moms who were just born or are early on in their journeys, please tune in. Had we had this episode early on in our own mommying careers, we would have felt a lot better.

Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher or head over to our website and you can listen from the landing page. Share this episode with a mom you believe is doing everything, and with a mom who tells you she’s afraid that she isn’t.

  • Khalila Lister, founder of Power of Voice Academy, comes on today as a TedX speaker and homeschooling mom of 4. Today, she trains people to take the stage or just gain confidence in public speaking. In this time of trial for the ummah and particularly for the people of Gaza, we are seeing more people speaking up for liberation. They’re making their cases more freely than they’ve ever been able to do before. Thanks, social media!

If you’ve always shied away from the stage or the mic because “it’s not my place,” or WORSE, “I can’t” speak in front of audiences. This month’s series is Muslim Moms Kick Ass because they CAN do great things even with great odds. We ALL CAN do the same.

For those who’ve ever dreamed of being on TedX, learn the process and listen to Khalila’s huge special project coming up in early 2024, as well as her free offering coming up SOON in case you’re ready to speak about your passion. The time to be kickass has come.

  • Dr. Nour Akhras is a pediatrician infectious disease specialist who has gone on multiple medical missions during her career, even while pregnant! And then she wrote a book about it. That definitely kicks a$$ for our series this month!

Listen to her medical mission journey, from the life-changing first trip to now, and how she was able to put that into words. Publishing a book is hard, too, so she describes all the hard things she had to face that helped her write it. It’s hard to say it now given the state of the world, but so timely. We can all do hard things because all of us have kicka$$ in us. Let’s find Allah and our peace now.
