  • Freddy and Emily are back for a special episode.

Freddy warns about the pervasiveness of Chinese CCP propaganda (we’re talking to you, Roger Waters), and how, for those under the propaganda of the CCP, we invite you to come visit Taiwan, then you’ll understand how wrong the CCP propaganda is about a lot of things - especially Taiwan.

Emily talks about Chen Chu, a Taiwanese politician seen in photos with Nancy Pelosi during her recent trip to Taiwan, but hasn’t been mentioned much in the media. In 1980 Chen Chu was a political activist and stood in front of a military court in Taipei. She was subsequently sentenced and jailed there. Fast forward to 2022, she’s giving a tour of the Human Rights Museum (the former prison) to U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the delegation. This shows how much Taiwan has progressed since authoritarian rule. Authoritarian rules does not last forever. It cannot last forever.

  • Freddy and Emily discuss China’s global aggression and the possible new world order.

Freddy warns about the rise of Chinese digital dictatorship that will eventually affect every democratic state. While China relies on fear-based diplomacy, the free world could use a more creative way to contain China, such as implementing human rights standards in international organizations in Asia or establishing an Asia-Pacific human rights court.

  • Featuring our interview with Barney Greenway from Napalm Death (a childhood hero of Freddy!) where we talked about metal, dissent, and standing up for what we believe in.

Released on October 10 (the designated national day for the Republic of China), this month we ditch the flag and anthem that claim to stand for Taiwan. We are a nation still in formation, and today, we dive into the thorny issue of national representation for a modern Taiwan. How do we (re)create ourselves? What is our national spirit? What kind of a nation do we want to be?

ps: October 10, 1911 marked the beginning of an uprising in China that led to the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of a new China, led by a new group that called themselves the "Republic of China". (That’s great history - but it just didn’t have to do with Taiwan.)

  • China’s overreaching influence in Hollywood is something that’s just become apparent. In Taiwan, however, this has been a reality for our creative industries for at least two decades. Today, Freddy and Emily lay down what Taiwan has learned from CCP censorship and the slippery slope to self-censorship.

Freddy recounts being threatened by Chinese students when Chthonic was on tour with Arch Enemy. The bands held a “to hell with them” attitude: the spirit of resistance is the core of metal and rock music. Freedom of expression is the foundation of all works of art. Creators should not abide by the arbitrary rules of authoritarian governments just to enter their markets.

We also remember the late-president Lee Teng-Hui who passed away at the end of July.

  • Episode 2 of METALHEAD POLITICS, a new show by Freddy Lim of Chthonic and Emily Y. Wu of Ghost Island Media.

It’s been a hell of a month. Freddy and Emily open with positive updates from Taiwan (adultery is decriminalized; a pro-China populist mayor gets recalled) before diving into the topic of the day. They stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and examine systematic oppression in Asia. An estimated one-million people are still in concentration camps in Xinjiang. The Chinese Communist Party performs a force choke on Hong Kong with a National Security Law.

Freddy deconstructs how “Millenia’s Faith Undone” went from Taiwanese lyrics to melody. He sings a children’s song, and introduces LMF (Lazy Mutha Fucka 大懶堂), a Cantonese hip-hop group from Hong Kong. Bonus: Freddy teaches Emily how to do a death growl.
