According to breastcancer.org, each year, 30% of all newly diagnosed cancers in women are breast cancer, and in 2023, almost 300 thousand cases of breast cancer were diagnosed.
While advances in medical research have brought about breakthroughs in cancer treatment, the factors contributing to the rise in breast cancer cases, especially in women younger than 50, remain multifaceted.

It steals our memories and impacts our minds. Alzheimer’s disease is being called a health crisis as worldwide care is estimated at more than $1 trillion and it’s expected to get worse. There is no cure, but new research reveals that how you eat and sleep could impact it.
Every 65 seconds, someone in America is told they have Alzheimer’s disease. Today, more than 6 million Americans are living with it, and now, new research suggests our circadian rhythm, or internal clock, could play a role in cognitive decline.
Alzheimer’s disease may not be the only disease impacted by our circadian rhythms – other studies in mice have shown that it also may impact people with Huntington’s disease.

A relatively new science studying the idea of hope looks to reverse some trends in mental health. According to a Gallop Poll, since the COVID-19 pandemic, people are the most unhappy and stressed they’ve ever been.
The poll had three takeaways from those who participated in the survey.
People are having more negative experiences and fewer positive ones.Stress, sadness, and worry are at their highest recorded levels.People do not feel rested and are feeling less joy than at any other time in history.Dr. Danielle Henderson, a clinical psychologist with Indiana University Health, joined us to talk about what is commonly called the science of hope and what it means for people’s mental health.
According to Henderson, factors like weather, social media usage, the type of news people may run into, and feeling less connected to others can contribute to feelings of hopelessness.
She adds that winter isn’t always the easiest for people.
For those experiencing hopelessness, Henderson recommends turning to the small things.
If those feelings persist for a few weeks, Henderson says that is the time to reach out to friends or talk to a professional.

More than 34 million people will be admitted into a hospital this year throughout the United States. Although the average stay is five days, that’s just the beginning of the recovery process. The NIH reports that 15% of discharged elderly patients end up back at the hospital.
A Harvard study found half of all patients who were discharged had medication errors when they went home. That’s just one of the major hurdles patients face. Now, one hospital is hoping to change that by creating healthcare coaches to guide patients who are recovering at home.
The new initiative is part of a larger program that began in 2017, where each year nurses are trained on post-discharge transitional care management. So far, more than 430 nurses have participated in the course.

Radiation is one of the key treatments in the fight against all forms of cancer. More than 650 thousand people in the U.S. will receive radiation to try and wipe out their disease. Now, a new radiation therapy is turning cancer against itself.
This year, 230 thousand men and women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, about 400 thousand people will be diagnosed with bone cancer.
For late-stage malignant bone and lung cancers, survival is measured in months, not years, but now, a new type of targeted radiotherapy is turning cancer cells against themselves.
Radiation oncologists at the city of hope are some of the first to use the reflection x one linear accelerator. It’s the world’s first real-time linear accelerator to help visualize the cancer.
The reflection x one can see precisely where to aim the beams of radiation, even when the tumor is moving. This decreases the risk of damaging healthy cells during radiation, giving doctors, and their patients another tool to help track down cancer and destroy it.
Earlier this year, the reflection x one received clearance from the FDA to treat primary or metastatic lung and bone cancer tumors.
