  • Quarantine.....there are varying magnitudes of lock down. Each state has different interpretations of what their citizens are *not* to do.

My brother, Daniel McCarthy makes his Primer debut to talk about what is going on in his state of Michigan. He is leading an initiative at his law firm to address Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer with assistance from his clients on a proposal to re-open the State following April 30, 2020. A group of his clients voluntarily joined together and retained a reliable Expert who prepared an accurate modeling report. They’re asking the Governor to consider this report, as opposed to the U of M modeling, which is based on non-public data and methodologies.

If you would like more information about how to do this in your state, contact Dan at [email protected].

A few days and 100+ comments later, people are still commenting. In any dark time, it always helps to be grateful for what you have, identify the good things that are still and always have been there and keep pushing forward.

Sometimes it helps to hear the good in other people's lives so you can identify it in yours...so I read each one of the comments in this episode.

    It's good.

  • The economy is good and unemployment is very low. That *doesn’t* mean that you can rest on your laurels when it comes to company loyalty. ****Watch this episode and subscribe! The largest radio station operator in the US, iHeartMedia recently “displaced” over 1100 of their Programming, On-Air, and Production staff. The cuts came without warning, though the company in its various forms over the years wasn’t exactly a stranger to doling out pink slips on occasion en mass. Matt Dubiel owns a radio station in Chicago and he published a video shortly after the iHeartMedia bloodbath that empathized with those affected, but also placed blame squarely on their shoulders. You see, if you’re still on the air in any capacity, you could be building a social media presence that rivals the audience of your entire station. Actually, if you’re in a myriad of sales positions, you could be doing the same. This way, if your company decides to pull the rug out from under you, you simply plant your flag elsewhere and your audience won’t skip a beat. If one day you get pulled into your boss' office and they begin talking about "moving in a different direction", how "it's nothing you did" or "we wish you well in your future endeavors", you can look them square in the face and ask, "Okay, fine! But are you sure you've thought this through?"But you need to build that audience, which will eventually give you LEVERAGE. There is a ton of rate shaming that goes on in VO land these days especially when it comes to prospect who lowball. I have dubbed them "Hamburger Clients". If treated properly, they may become some of your biggest fans.

    A few takeaways:

    - NEVER balk at an opportunity

    - This new economy in the creative space will be powered by relationships

    - Sharpen your selling process - Learn how to pivot during the dance

    - They get a chance to see what it's like to work with you, so smile and put on a show

    - No one wants to stay where they are and typically would like to move up. if they're your fan, they'll probably take you along

    - More Hamburger Clients = more referrals

    - It's economically smart

Mr. Svihlik aka "Mr.S" will be handling the History and Social Studies portion of my little girl's 8 grade experience. His philosophy wasn't about making sure that she came away with all the correct dates and who was involved with what battle. Instead he was more about her learning time management skills, strategically arguing grades, and even to a certain extent, salesmanship. As one might imagine, I was quite pleased. After all, it's not often that I seek out teachers to be on the show. Some of the things discussed:- failure is okay, the earlier you know how to do it and bounce back from it, the better- the problem with labeling kids as "gifted"- hiring a kid who strives diligently for a "B" over the kid who effortlessly earns an "A"- the immensely growing importance of trade schoolsAs always, the JMVO Weekly Primer is sponsored by @Big Dot Lighting - Commercial LED Lighting Specialists. • Yes, Spence is one of those one-word artists. Deservedly so.

****Watch this episode and subscribe/rate at https://youtu.be/yXIBzvPcrBs

I met Spence in 2001 when I took the big radio career leap to what was then CBS/Las Vegas. I had been toiling away at i95 WRKI for several years and received an opportunity to work alongside greats like Gavin Spittle, Peter Sorensen, Thom Kaufold, Cat Thomas, Jb-kluc John Bernard, @John David Wells as well as Spence, who easily became a mentor of sorts and certainly a creative inspiration for me.

Okay. That's it for the gushy platitudes for Spence. He needs only so much adjulation per day.

In this episode, Spence and I breakdown his process for creating engaging and entertaining content on a weekly, if not daily basis for his role on Chet Buchanan's Morning Show on 98.5 KLUC.

If you're someone getting into or has been podcasting for a short time, this episode is for you.

Little did I know was that I became familiar with Spence's work way before I met him when he produced a parody song centered around a feud happening between pop princess Christina Aguilera and rap god Eminem. Hey...it was the year 2000 and people threw shade in song form. Spence wrote, composed and produced a "rebuttal" to Eminem from Christina that went viral. Well, viral for that time was going international on a multitude of radio stations.

I read about it from my comfy studio in Brookfield, Connecticut with little suspicion that I would someday stand up as Spence's Best Man at his wedding.

Phil and I have similar backgrounds as I spent a majority of my professional life in radio. I know that he knows a smorgasbord of people better qualified to voice a special project for him. His new venture was going to be something called the PodGoats that he was going to host with his son Campbell.

I typically listen to all of the podcasts for which I produce imaging (intros, outros, promos, etc), so when theirs debuted, I took in an episode.

I have never been so hooked on something right out of the gate. I predict that The PodGoats Podcast will be one of the greats if they keep it up.

As much as I keep my podcast about marinating your mind in good stuff, I also do it to talk with people I find interesting. Phil and Campbell are very interesting people and their show....is just FUN.
