  • Everett Andrews is a lifelong craftsman. In grade school, he helped his grandfather, an

architect and building inspector, build a working gristmill. High school days were

focused on learning the basics of cabinetmaking. A strong work ethic developed as

logging, landscaping, and timber-framing jobs filled the days following school. While

building furniture, turning wood, and learning about building science, a love for working

with his hands grew into a full time vocation.

The next ten years were spent building and remodeling many fine homes and

commercial properties in the Blackstone valley.

As interests shifted, and his family grew, Everett moved into furniture making at a local

shop and then architectural millwork at a growing Worcester based company. As the

company grew, as did his skills and responsibilities. Problem solving and

communication skills were developed through more complex and detailed projects. He

became the site supervisor and project manager customers sought out for their high-end

residential and commercial projects from Maine to New Jersey, and Cape Cod to

    Vermont.

In 2012, EA Custom Millwork was established, opening the latest chapter in Everett’s

career. He endeavors to provide every customer with an enjoyable experience by

personally overseeing all aspects of the project at hand.

When he is not making sawdust or working with clients, Everett can be found spending

time with his grown children, hiking, flyfishing, and sailing the coast of New England.

  • In this episode I talk with Rebecca Snelling. I wanted to avoid talking about Lean Construction, but our shared passion for the ideas, principals and concepts of Lean were too strong. This is Part 1 of a two part conversation. In the end we reference Lean Construction often, so I will add a third part of our conversation where we go in more depth explaining the principals or Lean. This glossary of terms recording can be found here https://www.thehomeownersinstitute.com/

  • Dan and Haven share with us their experiences with building. Starting with a minor basement and porch renovation of a summer retreat to a modern kitchen and entry renovation, then culminating in their current project building a new home on raw land on Marta's Vineyard. Their very different childhood experiences were less about nostalgia but rather structured their desire for security and shelter. Elements they longed for in the house they will call home. They talk about finding comfort and opportunity in constraints and how they build a team they trust.

  • Rebecca knows fear. As a biologist and stress expert, Dr. Rebecca Heiss is dedicated to
helping us become self-aware and overcome our instinctual limitations – the ancient,
often subconscious fears that hold us back from our optimal performance and our
happiest lives. Her research has been designated “transformative” by the National
Science Foundation and it is waking up audiences around the world.

As an author (Instinct, April 2021), founder and CEO of the 360-review mobile application,
icueity, and highly sought-after professional speaker, Rebecca has found her calling in
helping others recognize the power of biological applications in their lives. A former
educator, Dr. Heiss spent much of her earlier career in the classroom at both the high
school and college levels and was recruited to be a founding member of an innovative
charter school with a focus on entrepreneurial thinking and impact-based learning.

Rebecca has been honored to speak internationally on her work, including multiple TEDx
talks. Her “fear(less)” message inspires hope and actionable insights to train our brains
to work for us, rather than against us in times of uncertainty. With surprising humor and
palpable energy, no matter if Dr. Heiss is delivering virtually or on stage, she wins over
audiences around the world with her interactive, inspiring and timely takeaways.
She lives in South Carolina with her spoiled rotten dog named Guinness, and every day
tries to live her life motto: “spread happy.”

  • We met Jan 10 years ago when she was the Vice President at Brenner Builders. During her 20 years at Brenner Builders, Jan was in charge of all construction activities where she successfully led over 45 projects ranging from $1 to $26 million in size. With Jan and hundreds of talented craftspeople we renovated a historic home in Scarsdale NY. The owner on that project asked out team to carry a high level of respect towards the home and the people it was built by and for. This respect for one another elevated the work and the spirit of the home as a vessel for the family and community to grow.

Jan Corning is now a realtor in Upstate NY. In addition to helping families find their perfect home in the Finger Lakes region of NY, Jan Corning is the owner of Corning Management Services. CMS is proud to have worked with: Habitat for Humanity, Wayne County, and JG Franzese Enterprises. CMS has management experience in historic renovations in Waverly NY and the rebuilding of Capt. Bills at the south end of Seneca Lake.

In this episode we talk about the legacy of Jan’s childhood home and how it influenced the new home she built for the family she holds truly in her heart. Jan’s family includes her children, Matthew Corning of Brewster, NY, and Sarah Corning of Big Sky, Montana. The family is enhanced by her husband’s children, Jesslyn, JL, Jill and David, as well as their children and grandchildren, Haley, Chrissy, Zach, Rilyn and Levi of Mount Pleasant, SC and James, Jack, Allie and Sadie of South Salem, NY.

  • Billy shares his passion for fine wood floor finishing through learning the trade from his father to working "literally" alone at the end of the project. 95% of Billy's effort and planning goes into relationships and preparations before the final finish. We talk about how his childhood home still caries strong memories today in his dreams. We also reflect on the transition of the construction project where the tradespeople are complete and the owners are left alone to experience their work in solitude.

Can you remember walking into your new home vacant just after purchasing or building? That experience is electric! So much potential and a flood of memories arise.

  • Mike established Shepherd PMC with Fred in 2010, when an owner reached out for help on a massive renovation project in Westchester, NY. Over the past 10 years he has worked with Owners, architects, and builders to bring together teams to deliver successful projects. Mike started out as Carpenter over 35 years ago and was fortunate to learn from a true craftsman who taught him the value of a job well done. He appreciates the craftsmanship the tradesman put into every project and the effort and dedication that goes along with that and the challenges architects face in getting the design just right. Today we discuss these topics in detail.

  • Today's talk is with Eve Isenberg. Eve and I met in 2005 when I was a project manager at a construction management firm. We built a particularly challenging, special project together. We talk about that project a little, but we start the conversation with her current work, where Eve runs an architecture firm with her partner Brigette Steines, their office InkStone architecture focuses on mid-century modern homes.

If you're not familiar with mid-century modern homes, do a little research. I think you'll find a lot of the mid-century modern aesthetics carry into the contemporary architecture we see today.

InkStone's practice sustains the legacy of the mid-century modern architectural style while renovating these older homes with today's modern envelopes and mechanical systems.

Eve shares good advice for both the first time homeowner doing a project. And then we talk about some of her more seasoned owners and how they experienced projects differently.

At the end, Eve and I have an outtake where we reflect on the project we built back in 2005. We talk about the lessons learned from that project, how decisions we made back then played out today. It's an interesting conversation.

So enjoy. And if you're inclined to ask questions, please reach out. I'd love to include your questions or discussion on future podcasts.

    Thanks for listening.
