  • In Episode 6 of the Home Barista Podcast, I'm tackling a hotly debated topic in the coffee industry: is the rise of home baristas and better home coffee equipment killing cafes?
With the increasing popularity of home brewing and the availability of high-quality and affordable equipment, more and more people are turning to home brewing rather than visiting cafes. This is causing a decline in business for cafes, cafe owners, coffee roasters, and restaurants.
In this episode, I share thoughts from industry experts that I spoke to around this topic to understand the extent of the problem and the reasons behind it. I'll also be sharing some thoughts on how I believe cafes facing these challenges can and maybe short adapt to the changing market.
If you're a cafe owner, coffee roaster, or restaurant, this episode is essential listening. You'll gain valuable insights from me as a customer into the current situation.
Whether you're a business owner or a coffee enthusiast, you won't want to miss this episode. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing cafes and learn about the actions that can be taken to support them.
Don't miss out on this informative and thought-provoking episode of the Home Barista Podcast, where we explore the question, is the rise of home baristas and better home coffee equipment killing cafes? and what can be done to help them out? So, tune in and join the conversation!

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers.

Here we are coming to the end of 2022! Like what the heck? How has this even happened? This year has been a flash, I know we say that every year, but seriously this year has FLOWN BY!

Today's episode is a quick thank you message from me to round out the year. I had planned to release a whole episode about a specific topic but after listening back to the recording and re-watching the video I wasn't happy with either of them and sat there thinking to myself "What are you even talking about here?" hahaha. So, that episode got scrapped and I took the opportunity to record a thank you episode for you all as 2022 has been a huge year for me as The Drumming Barista and in my personal life as Sean.

2022 has seen the launch of the Home Barista Podcast, The Drumming Barista on YouTube, and Being invited to fly to Auckland to be a judge at the New Zealand Aeropress Champs, Hitting 2000 followers on Instagram, connecting with so many new coffee and alcohol brands, food brands, international coffee content creators and welcoming so many new people and faces into The Drumming Barista global community. It’s been busy that’s for sure. But, I wouldn't want it any other way.

So, for the sake of keeping this description short. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for all the love and support towards me and The Drumming Barista community this year. Thank you for becoming a part of it and for sticking around. It honestly means the world and without you guys, on my side, I couldn't do this without you.

Anyway's less reading this and more listening to the episode!

Be sure to hit that subscribe button so that in 2023 you don't miss out on any future episodes.

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers!
I hope you are all doing super well. I am so excited (as always) to be back behind the microphone and to be bringing you a new episode of Coffee Break here on the Home Barista Podcast.

Today's episode is one that has taken far too long for me to create and for that, I apologise but Hey, here we are. Better late than never that's for sure. I am talking about how I, The Drumming Barista have trained my palate over the 6 - 7 years that I have taken coffee and being a home barista more seriously than it just being a hobby. As mentioned in the podcast this is a question that I get asked so often and to be honest, I have forgotten how many times I have been asked.
I believe that this episode is one to listen to a couple of times as I share a lot of information on a lot of different aspects of how I have trained my palate and it may be a little overwhelming and or hard to take in the first time round of listening. So, I would encourage you to save or bookmark this episode so that you can keep coming back to it. I also, encourage you to have a notepad and or a note open on your phone, tablet or computer that you can use to take notes when I share my top 5 points for this topic and how once again I have trained my palate to be at the place it is today.

    ANNOUNCEMENT TIME

I am super excited to announce that I partnered up with one of Christchurch's best and longest-standing roasters C4 Coffee as their newest affiliate. So, if you are on the market this week or the following week for some fresh coffee, then be sure to click my affiliate link in my bio to browse what C4 Coffee has to offer. I highly recommend their latest Colombian single-origin the Nectario Zuñiga Lactic Natural Light / Filter Roast. I have a bag of this at home at the moment and it is blowing my mind with how crazy and delicious this is. Singing of Passionfruit and Passionfruit. It is like a pornstar martini and a pina-colada cocktail had a love child. It is perfect as a cold brew and or flash brew for the warm weather that we are enjoying here in New Zealand here at the moment.

My next recommendation would be to check out their soon-to-be-released super limited edition, rare micro-lot, award-winning coffee which C4 Coffee are calling the odyssey range which is currently on pre-order. They come in a beautiful-looking 100g tin and you get a washed processed Colombian coffee called Finca Las Flores and which is of the Sidra Variety of coffee beans.

Looking at gifts for that coffee-loving special someone in your life? Then you can't look past the latest addition to the C4 Coffee retail offering and that is the Coffee advent calendar. Consisting of 24 x 20g hand-picked Colombian coffees it is a fantastic way for them to explore different ranges of coffee varieties and processes. Grab these as soon as, as they will no doubt sell out.

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers and welcome to Episode 10 of the Home Barista Podcast - New Zealand’s one and only coffee podcast.

Today’s episode is a New Zealand exclusive as I was the first person privileged to sit down with the 2022 New Zealand Barista Champion - Hanna Teramoto to catch up and talk about her coffee journey of 15 years and how that has led her to be a 2 x NZ Barista Champion.

This conversation with Hanna was so incredible. Her passion for coffee, the industry, and for making the world know that being a career barista is valid, life-giving and a well-respected job is so infectious. Just going to come clean, ever since we have had this conversation it has made me miss being behind the bar so badly.

Hanna’s experience of competing in the barista championships has been nothing short of amazing and full of excitement and that excitement just flows out of her no matter where she is and who she is speaking to. You will hear me say within the podcast that she has inspired me to think about competing in the 2023 barista champs. Don’t hold me to it, but never say never right?

My hope for all of you (no matter if you are a home barista or professional barista) is that you are thinking about how you can take your skill level and love for coffee to another level. For those of you listening who don’t work within the coffee industry but do enjoy a barista-made coffee, my hope is that through this conversation you have been able to gain a deeper understanding of what it is to be a career barista and I hope that the next time you visit your local cafe you fist bump your barista and say thank you.

For those of you wanting to connect with Hanna you can through Instagram and through Coffee Tech NZ for incredible coffee and coffee accessories.

Thank you again all you beautiful coffee lovers. I’ve been your host Sean aka The Drumming Barista here on The Drumming Barista and Home Barista Podcast.

I have two things to ask of you as listeners of the show. They are to please hit the subscribe button on your favourite podcast platform, which lets me know you are enjoying the show and makes sure you get notified of new episodes. • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers and welcome to Episode 9 of the Home Barista Podcast.

In today's episode, I am joined by an insane crew of coffee professionals, self-confessed coffee nerds, coffee roasters, business owners, and influencers. We are talking about a somewhat controversial topic: "Is Coffee Becoming Boring?" This is a question that has been floating around in my mind for a little while as over the past 6 months I have consumed a couple of bags of coffee that have left me very underwhelmed and just confused. But, this question isn't just about drinking coffee, it is also aimed at the industry itself.

For this episode, I am joined by an insane crew of 4 people (3 of them you have already been introduced to here on the Home Barista Podcast) and the fourth person is making her debut. Let me introduce them to you:

Logan - Co-owner of Hammerstone Coffee and Barista Championship Veteran.
Jaye - Barista, and Roaster at Firsthand Coffee and Coffee Influencer at Your Local Barista NZ on Instagram.
Ant - AKA The Magic Roast. Coffee blogger extraordinaire, Wellington coffee legend, Self-confessed coffee nerd, and a very well-respected advocate of the New Zealand coffee industry.
Last but not least making her debut is Michalina - the YouTube coffee queen aka Coffee That Gives A Puck and also a part-time barista in Christchurch with Switch Espresso.

I invited this crew of people to have this conversation with me as I knew (before we even hit record) that the points they were all bringing to the table are coming from a deep wealth of knowledge, passion, hard work, and pure love for coffee that made for one of the best conversations I have been a part of, for a long time. So good in fact, this is a 2 part episode.

ANYWAY, less reading and more listening. Make sure you have a delicious cup of coffee in hand and hit that play button.

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers!

I hope you are all doing super well. I am so excited to bring you a new episode and the beginning of a new series here on the Home Barista Podcast.

Within this series, I will be sitting down with Cafe Owners to talk about the future of the Hospitality and Coffee Industry. This topic for the podcast has arisen at a great time as New Zealand has reopened its international borders which means more people can visit New Zealand and experience Kiwi Hospitality and Coffee Culture and bring their experiences and culture to us. It also means that Kiwis can leave New Zealand to visit other countries to gain new experiences and a deeper passion for the industry and bring them back home with them. It is a very exciting time for the industry and I am excited to have these conversations.

To kick off the series I am sitting down with one of the coolest dudes I have had the pleasure of meeting this year. He goes by the name Greg Cornes and is the owner-operator of Goodness Gracious Cafes in Auckland. Greg is very vocal on his social media channels around adopting technology and automation within his cafes to help with the flow of staff and customers and to also lighten the load on his staff to allow them more time and freedom to give a world-class service that will keep the customer coming back time and time again.

I am so pumped about this episode and this conversation in particular as the industry is currently going through a rapid change of pace and is heading more and more towards automation out on the floor and behind the coffee bar. What Greg shares from personal experiences, his current business plan and what he is experiencing within other cafes around his region are super insightful, encouraging and motivational points for anyone currently in business, wanting to take the next step with their business or just starting out.

I hope you enjoy this collab episode of here on the Home Barista Podcast. I would love to hear your thoughts and any feedback on today's episode and any of the past episodes by dropping me an email at [email protected] via a DM on Instagram at The Drumming Barista.

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers!

I hope you are all doing super well? I am so excited (as always) to bring you a new episode of the Home Barista Podcast and extra excited to bring the third episode of #CoffeeBreak to you all.

Today's episode is an extra special one as a guest joins me for the first time who is a great friend of mine and goes by the name Paul Fletcher. Some of you may or may not know Paul but he is one of the general managers of Common Good Coffee here in New Zealand. For those of you who have been following me for a while, you will know that Common Good Coffee have a very special place in my heart as I love them as people, as a team of people and as a coffee company. I have had the pleasure of working alongside them on a couple of projects since my move from Wellington to Christchurch which has allowed me to get a great and deeper insight into the business and the people behind it.

Me and Paul talk about all things Common Good Coffee and Joyya. Joyya is a really beautiful charity that Common Good Coffee partners with to help distribute significant amounts of money and aid into poverty-driven countries, where modern-day slavery, sex and human trafficking and the constant degradation of people and human rights are at an all-time high. Paul talks about Joyya on a deeper level within the podcast and I strongly urge you to listen as the story is so powerful and moving. If you would like to learn more about Joyya, then click here to check out the website.

I hope you enjoy this collab episode of coffee break here on the Home Barista Podcast. I would love to hear your thoughts and any feedback on today's episode and any of the past episodes by dropping me an email at [email protected] via a DM on Instagram at The Drumming Barista.

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers. I hope you are all doing super well? In today's collab episode I am sitting down with Logan owner and founder of New Zealand's newest coffee roastery Hammerstone Coffee.

Some of you will already know of Logan as he is a veteran of the New Zealand coffee industry and as you will learn in this episode, he started his coffee career at a very young age alongside his mother. From working at Mojo Coffee, visiting coffee-growing countries, regions and farms, to competing at the New Zealand Barista champs to now owning his own coffee roasting business, Logan is a busy man but always has time to sit down with anyone and talk all things coffee and answer any burning questions they have.

Logan strongly believes in sharing knowledge and training the next generation of coffee lovers and professionals be it home baristas, full-time baristas, roasters or coffee farmers. This is evident through how he speaks within this episode and the vision behind Hammerstone Coffee. Today we will be talking about:

    · How Logan got into the coffee industry and how he became a barista.
    · Being a barista here in New Zealand before, during and after COVID.
    · The New Zealand barista championships and how to prepare, what it takes and what it is like behind the scenes.
    · His new business Hammerstone Coffee.

I love talking to Logan about coffee and the industry as I always leave feeling so inspired, encouraged and refreshed and I know that after listening to this episode you will too.

Make sure to give Hammerstone Coffee a follow on social media to keep up to date with all the daily happenings and new coffee releases. Make sure you drop them a DM to say G'day as I know Logan and the team will really appreciate it.

I hope you enjoy today's episode. As always I love hearing and receiving your feedback. So please be sure to give this episode and or the podcast a rating out of 5 and if you can drop a quick review that would mean the world and will help this podcast out a lot.

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers and home baristas. Welcome to episode 5 of the Home Barista Podcast.

In today's episode, I am talking about the obvious differences between the Aeropress and Hario V60. I use the word obvious as these brewers are very different in terms of looks, brew style and cup profile. I have kept the information shared within this episode surface level to keep it easy to understand and follow. For those of you who wish to get a deeper insight into the Aeropress and Hario V60, I recommend you head on over to YouTube and check out the global coffee legend that is James Hoffmann. He has a whole series on YouTube where he covers the history and science of the Aeropress and many videos on the Hario V60. So click here (after listening to this episode of course) to check out James' YouTube channel.

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers!

I hope you are all doing super well? I am so excited (as always) to bring you a new episode of the Home Barista Podcast for Home Baristas and extra excited as this is the very first collab episode.

In this episode, I am joined by a great friend of mine Jaye aka Your Local Barista NZ on Instagram. Jaye is a barista who works for First Hand Coffee in the beautiful Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand. She has a fantastic story to share about her coffee career past, present and future and I know that it will impact so many of you who are starting out as a barista and coffee roaster.

Jaye also touches on a very personal topic about her losing her sister in a tragic accident. This has helped Jaye dream bigger dreams for herself on a personal level and her career and some projects that have come to life in her sister's name!

I want to add a sentence here and say Thank you again Jaye for being so open, vulnerable and raw, I really appreciate you and your time!

I hope you enjoy the first-ever collab episode here on the Home Barista Podcast for Home Baristas. I would love for you to drop me a DM over on Instagram to let me know what you enjoyed about this episode and if you have any feedback at all about the podcast please send me an email at [email protected]!

  • Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers!

Sean, Why did you become a barista?

I get asked this question a lot. I no longer work as a full-time barista and I still get asked the question, but through a different lens of 'Why, did you become a barista?'.

So, in today's episode, I am opening up that question in greater detail and I am quite excited about it.

I will be going back in time to 16-year-old Sean and my first experience with drinking coffee back in the UK and why I became a barista to help me gain more confidence in a personal aspect of my life that affects me to this day. Then to finish off I will touch on why I wanted to get myself more into the wider industry and how that has helped me shape the relationships I have with many brands inside and outside the coffee industry!

I hope you enjoy today's episode. Drop me a DM over on Instagram to let me know what you enjoyed about this episode and if you have any feedback at all about the podcast please send me an email at [email protected].

    Big Love

  • Hi, everyone and welcome to the first official episode of the Home Barista Podcast for Home Baristas with me Sean aka The Drumming Barista.

I truly believe that this is going to be your next favourite coffee podcast! Bold statement I know, but there are so many coffee podcasts out there that say they will help to inspire you within coffee when actually they uninspire you as they are hard to listen to and follow.

So, in today's episode, I am talking about The Drumming Barista. Who the drumming is, where it came from, why it exists and the mandate behind it. For those of you who have followed me for a while, you will have heard and read about this story numerous times, so I hope that you will stick around for 20 minutes to hear it one more time. I think you will enjoy it!

I would love to take this opportunity and say Hi or Kia Ora from New Zealand to those of you who are joining this community for the first time, It is so good to have you! To those of you who have been with me from the start - Thank you! Thank you for hanging around, supporting me in this journey and for playing a part in turning The Drumming Barista into the beautiful community of coffee lovers we have here today!
