  • Calling all hunters out there! Have you been struggling with this big game season? Don't worry, you're not alone. In this special episode, we have some awesome guests who will help you make sense of it all. Brad is joined by Dan Sturgess, an ACA biologist, Linda Zimmerling, a seasoned hunter and mentor, and Cassandra Hewitt, a new hunter, to discuss the season and all the factors that can affect it. From weather patterns to moon phases, they've got you covered.

The group delves into the impact of the spring and summer weather patterns and the unusually warm fall on how deer moved, fed, and acted. Dan and Linda share their insights on how agriculture, native land, and the lack of snow played a part in how deer behaved this season. They also discuss how warm weather affected hunter participation and predator factors.

Cassandra offers a fresh perspective on this season as a new hunter. She shares some of her lessons and how they will impact her future hunting experiences. One of the most important things she learned was the value of patience and perseverance. Cassandra also talks about the conversations and comments on social media from hunters across the province, showing that this season's struggles were felt across the hunting community.

So, if you've been feeling frustrated this season, remember that it's not you; it's the deer. Hunting is never easy, but that's what makes it so rewarding. Keep at it, and happy hunting!

  • Daryl is an avid outdoorsman who was born in Alberta and has lived here his whole life. Growing up in rural Alberta he has hunted most of his life, with waterfowl being his passion. In the fall when Daryl is not hunting with his son Ron, he gives his time to helping others get involved in hunting and the outdoors. He volunteers as a mentor with the Delta Waterfowl Parkland Pintails, whose mission is to get people outdoors who have never done it before, through their various programs such as the Waterfowl 101.

Daryl has now passed on his passion to his 14-year-old son Ron who was once a participant in the Waterfowl 101 program himself. Ron has since become the youngest member of the Parkland Pintails volunteer group and has recently won an “outstanding volunteer” award with the chapter. At the recent annual Parkland Pintails fundraising dinner, the group recognized his efforts, contributions, stewardship to conservation, and involvement in the outdoor world.

Daryl and Ron both volunteer their time with Delta Waterfowl. As well, Ron has volunteered with events hosted by Alberta Conservation Association such as the Kids Can Catch event and is always on the lookout for more opportunities where he can lend a hand.

While Daryl’s main love is water fowling, Ron has shown interest in all facets of hunting, having shot his first deer when he was 12. He looks forward to the many hunting opportunities that lie ahead.

In addition to hunting and harvesting wild proteins, Daryl and Ron love the “after the trigger” moments: They do all their own processing, including complete butchering and making their own sausage.

  • Hunting is more than just heading out to harvest an animal; it’s about connection and community. Father-daughter duo Troy and Dezirae Flasch share with Brad this month their unique experiences hunting. They talk about the sense of accomplishment and pride they feel bringing home a harvest to feed the family, how their shared interest in hunting connects them, and how their experiences with local programs and resources have helped them to gain confidence in hunting and the outdoors.

Troy started hunting 12 years ago in his late 30s after being introduced to firearms and hunting through work, a great example of “it’s never too late” for anything. Troy is still working on getting exposure to everything hunting in Canada and now gets to experience a lot of those “firsts” with his daughters. Through a shared passion and interest, they are becoming his hunting buddies in life as they learn together.

When her daughters were young, Sarah worked from home raising game birds such as pheasants, chukars, quail, and Merriam turkeys.

You may recognize Sarah at some of Alberta Conservation Association events like Waterfowl Warmup or the Taber Pheasant Festival mentoring or educating new hunters through the Report A Poacher program. For a year and a half, Sarah has worked for Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association (AHEIA). Through AHEIA, Sarah has had the pleasure of being part of the great programs they provide to Albertans that are designed to mentor new hunters, shooters, and archers but also bring awareness of the Alberta wildlife and wildness.
