Jonathan Smith is the Managing Director of Swellaway Ltd and ProMOTION Fitness. A business professional with an MBA from Lancaster University that has run numerous businesses with technical products including global brands like HILTI, BASF, VELCRO over the last 36yrs. Since joining Swellaway Ltd in Sept 2022, Jonathan has led the business to set up international distribution partners to launch and sell ProMOTION EV1 across more than 20 countries. A passionate believer of research-based product technologies like ProMOTION EV1 as an important tool for FMPA members to consider for their toolkits.
Dr. Olivia Greenhalgh, currently a Senior Research Associate at MMU, carried out her PhD on developing cryotherapy protocols for knee injury management, using theProMOTION EV1 device. Olivia was previously the Technical Specialist and Knowledge Transfer Associate at Swellaway Ltd, where her role involved developing an evidence base to support the targeted cooling approach. In recognition of the successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership project, Olivia was presented a ‘Future Leader’ award at the 2021 ‘KTP Best of the Best’ awards and was shortlisted for ‘Knowledge Transfer/Exchange of the Year 2022’ at the Times Higher Education Awards. -
Mr Andy Williams is a knee surgeon who has worked with many professional athletes, including Premier League football players and Premiership rugby players. He completed his medical training at King’s College Hospital in London before completing orthopaedic training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, after which he undertook a fellowship in Australia where he gained some of his first experiences in sports-related surgery. His expertise now lies in sports-related knee injuries and knee ligament issues. He undertakes approximately 100 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions every year. 90% of his work is with professional athletes. He is also a prize-winning researcher of knee-related issues.

Bram Swinnen is a strength and conditioning coach with more than 20 years’ experience in professional sport. He has trained eight Olympic Medallists and various World Champions. He has also worked with the football team FC Anzhi. During this time he trained many elite players. He has a master’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s in physical therapy. He has also authored a book, Strength Training for Soccer

Johnnie Lowery is an author and keen football fan, following England and Sutton United home and away. His first book, Six Added Minutes, was written whilst he was at University and published in November 2019. As well as being an author, Lowery has a keen interest in mental health, based on his own experiences as a teenager.
His second book, Match Fit, is inspired by a desire to ensure mental health does not remain a taboo subject in society, and more specifically, football. -
Derek Wright is currently Head Physiotherapist at Al Ain FC in Saudi Arabia. Derek was previous Head Physiotherapist at Newcastle United, having spent a long and illustrious career at the club spanning 38 years. Derek also previously worked at Fulham FC. His first job was at Northumberland Miner’s Rehabilitation Centre and he discusses in this podcast his career and also some of the key components and principles of physiotherapy that have stuck with him as well as some of the changes over his time in football.

Dr Joanne Parsons and Dr Sheree Bekker
Dr Joanne Parsons is a Physiotherapist and Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba in Canada. Dr Sheree Bekker is an Associate Professor in Injury Prevention at the University of Bath in the UK. They have published a review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on anterior cruciate ligament injuries that discusses gendered influences on injury rates in girls and women. -
Professor Christa Jansevan Rensburg interviewed by Eleanor Trezise
Professor Christa Janse van Rensburg is a Consultant Rheumatologist, experienced Sports Physician and the Head of the Section Sports Medicine at the University of Pretoria where she oversees the teaching of sport and exercise medicine doctors and conducts research. Notably, she was the team doctor for the South Africa National Olympic Team to the Athens 2004 Olympics and was the medical venue officer for the Loftus Stadium in South Africa during the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009 and FIFA World Cup in 2010. She was recently appointed the Chair of the Medical Advisory Panel for World Netball. She has investigated the effects of travelling on athletes and in 2020 published a systematic review on this topic in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. She is also a project partner and supervisor of the Drake Football Study, a project which is tracking the mental and physical health of 170 footballers over a 10-year period. -

Callum is currently Head of Performance at Alanyaspor and has worked in multiple aspects of performance from Strength and Conditioning, GPS, Rehabilitation roles to head up Performance and Medical departments.
Callum has over 15 year’s experience that spans across experiences in Premier League & Championship as well as Leagues abroad including Brazilian Serie A , Turkish Super Lig as well as Experience at Aspire Academy and Senior and Age Group International Experience. -
Dr Ronnie Banerjee is the current head doctor for Hull City, alongside his roles at GB Taekwondo, Leeds Rhinos and Jamaica rugby league.

Professor Aneil Malhotra is a consultant cardiologist and an expert in sports cardiology. He is the lead cardiologist for multiple elite sports teams including Manchester City, Leeds United and Burnley. He also works with Manchester United, the England national football teams and British Cycling. He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and has also spent time at MIT and Harvard. He completed a PhD in inherited heart diseases and sports cardiology at St George’s, University of London and is now based in Manchester undertaking a large programme of work around the athlete’s heart at Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan University. He has over one hundred peer-reviewed publications and has co-authored and contributed to books in cardiology and medicine.

Mike has been part of the international Sports Medicine and Performance community for over 20 years. A former Strategy & Business Architecture Consultant with Accenture, his professional path diverted into the Sports and Health industries whilst undertaking his MBA at Oxford University.
Since 2002 he has actively worked to professionalise and raise standards within Performance and Medical departments in sport globally, through the recruitment of diverse talent, the building of global knowledge networks and practically working with organisations on their people, systems and processes.
His passion is to connect people and implement world leading ideas. He is also academically published in the field of injury epidemiology and prevention of injuries, and is a Board Member of the Football Research Group that conducts injury and performance analysis studies for UEFA.
He is currently the Head of International for Isokinetic Medical Group, and an organisational design and professional development consultant for Brooklyn Nets, Houston Texans and Red Bull Performance. -
Stephen Reid
Steven began his playing career at Millwall FC before a move to the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers. He then went on to play 5 more seasons in the Premier league with WBA and Burnley.
Steven’s coaching career began at Reading FC with Steve Clarke helping them to a playoff final before moving on to Crystal Palace FC alongside Roy Hodgson. He then helped the Scotland National Team to their first tournament in 22 years at the 2021 EUROS. Steven left his role to concentrate on club duties at Nottingham Forest helping them return to the Premier League after 23 years.
After promotion Steven decided to pursue a different career in Wellbeing, Confidence and Leadership coaching alongside Counselling studies. -
FMPA Education Team Member Eleanor Trezise interviews Professor Charlie Pedlar. Professor Pedlar is a Professor of Applied Sports and Exercise Science at St Mary’s University, an Honorary Associate Professor at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health at UCL, and Chief Science and Research Officer at Orreco. He has previously had roles at the British Olympic Association and English Institute of Sport. He currently works with professional athletes from a variety of sports including basketball, ice hockey and football.

Ahmed Hegazy, is an Egyptian international with over 100 caps
for the national team, who has also played at the top level in the Egyptian league, Serie A Italian league, English Premier League and Championship. Ahmed now plays in the Saudi Super League and is enjoying good form with his team.
Ahmed has valuable experience at international level. He played at the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, twice at the U21 World Cup and the FIFA Arab Cup, which was held last year at the same time in the football season as the 2022 World Cup. So, Ahmed will be able to tell us about his experience playing a FIFA tournament during the season... -

Katie Stanislas is a physiotherapist and hydrotherapist working at Isokinetic Medical Group, one of FIFA’s Centres of Medical Excellence. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Nottingham. She has a keen interest in and has conducted research into menstrual cycle dysfunction in athletes, including relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S). -
Dr Matthew Buckthorpe is an educator, applied researcher and practitioner focusing on sports injury rehabilitation, prevention, and performance coaching. He has worked as a sport injury rehabilitation specialist and R&D specialist with the Isokinetic Medical Group. He has recently transitioned to academia, now as a senior lecturer in Strength and conditioning and physiology at St Mary’s University, Twickenham.

Dr Todd is a registered osteopath, lecturer, published author and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Academic qualifications includes, a PhD in orthopaedics and clinical science, Masters degree in sport injury medicine and an Honours degree in osteopathy.His professional experience includes consultant osteopath to The Football Association since 2005, has provided osteopathic care for 200 international games, later this year he’ll be attending his fifth FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022 and has previously attended FIFA World Cup tournaments, Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018; UEFA European Championships Poland & Ukraine 2012; France 2016; Euro 2020. Consultant Osteopath to Chelsea Football Club since 2008 and for Athletics since 2019, specifically providing trackside support for Dina Asher-Smith.Other consultancy roles includes Team GB male and female Basketball at the London 2012 Olympics, British Athletics at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and many other clubs including; Real Madrid, IFK Gothenburg, Manchester United FC, Manchester City FC, Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Portsmouth FC, West Bromich Albion FC, and Worcestershire County Cricket Club.His clinical experience with both elite and amateur level athletes has led to Carl developing his own unique style of integrating osteopathy and corrective exercise rehabilitation, encompassing bio-psychosocial, biomechanical, and functional rehabilitation for patient management and re-education. His unique areas of interest are spine, hip and groin rehabilitation pre and post surgery and specifically injury prevention. Carl lectures regularly at medical conferences both nationally and internationally on the subject of sports injury management and rehabilitation, and has designed and delivers his own CPD courses on Functional integrated approaches to managing the athlete.
