    Dane was involved in the creation of Stevie, which occurred during a marketing hack games held in early 2020. You can hear more about that in Episode 23 of the Dream Job Ready show, when I interviewed MI Academy's Alita Harvey-Rodriguez and Natalie Khoury, who coordinated the event.

    Are you feeling unsure about your career choice? Starting to feel like you're in the wrong job or wrong industry? My guest from Episode 31, Michelle Battersby, whose past roles include Country Manager at Bumble and CMO at Keep it Cleaner, admits she's had thoughts like that in the past and acted on them, and admits she expects to get them again at some point in her career down the line.

    In this bite size episode, I share some of Michelle's advice from her long form interview in Episode 31.

This 1 minute 40 second snippet comes from Episode 31, with guest, Michelle Battersby, who was then-CMO of online fitness company, Keep It Cleaner. Michelle has had a busy career with several key job and industry changes, so during the interview I asked her why, what and how she made the leap from HR roles in the finance and banking industry to being Director of Marketing for the Woman centric dating app, Bumble.Michelle gives simple and relatable advice, which helped her get the opportunity to first connect with Bumble founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd.Side note... You would have likely heard Whitney’s name mentioned plenty in the news this year after she took Bumble public on the Nasdaq in February, which made her the world’s youngest self made female billionaires at age 31. A good person to connect with!Here’s Michelle recalling how that career change went down:

    I remember having this inner feeling - just this voice that kept saying to me, ‘you're way better at something else than this. There is something out there that you're meant to be doing that you're not doing’. I just had this feeling that I hadn't found the right thing yet, and then it was as soon as I began acknowledging those inner thoughts and feelings that opportunities started coming to me. I do hate giving this advice, because it sounds really, you know, “woo-woo” and it's not really theoretical or tangible, but I really do believe what you put out is what you get back, and as soon as you start looking for things and start talking to people honestly about what you're going through and the fact that you you're looking for something else and you're not sure what it is, and you're exploring other ideas, it doesn't matter if you speak to one person or 10 people, that one person or all those 10 people, could remember what you've said and come back to you at some point. And that's exactly what happened for me, and I ended up being offered the Bumble opportunity, which may be once in a lifetime, but it was a friend that I'd spoken to and she remembered me saying I wasn't sure I was enjoying what I was doing, and the next time we spoke three months later she came to me with an introduction to chat to Whitney [Wolfe Herd]. You have absolutely nothing to lose in talking to people or putting things out there, you only have something to gain.

  • Hi, I'm Dane Sharp - host of Dream Job Ready. I'm also an excited, new starter this week, announcing I've landed a new dream job as Chief Marketing Officer at tech startup, togetherAI.


    I've been fortunate to work for some amazing companies (Rip Curl, Under Armour, eBay, McDonald's) and awesome people in my career, but this new endeavour is one worth sharing and celebrating.


    Unfortunately, youth mental health is deteriorating as children are “on device” at increasingly younger ages with an alarming correlation in increased rates of anxiety, depression, cyber-predatory and cyber-bullying. 1 in 5 young people will be socially excluded, threatened or abused online this year. 1 in 4 are at clinical risk of serious mental illness but the majority are reluctant to seek help.


    Families often lack the awareness, knowledge and communication skills necessary to navigate complex scenarios and build resilient mental health and wellbeing on the journey to adulthood. Over 70% of parents feel that they struggle to communicate with their children.


    As a new parent, these stats and the realities at large about family mental health shocked me. When I learned of togetherAI's focus and mission, I couldn't help but want to be a part of its future.


    I've known togetherAI Founder and CEO, Josh Wilson, for more than 6 years, working together briefly when he was starting his first business venture, StatEdge. Today, I'm happy to be working with him and a team of passionate peers to bring togetherAI to life.


    I invited Josh on to the show for this episode and asked him to prepare 3 reasons why his new job is a dream job. The three?

  • Business owner, C7 quadriplegic, author and one heck of an inspiration - Darren Longbottom (Owner of Zink Surf) chats with Dane Sharp about life and leadership in a wheelchair | Dream Job Ready EP45


    Ready to be inspired, shocked, moved and motivated in one short interview?

    Darren 'Daz' Longbottom was born into the surfing industry. Growing up on the beach in Cronulla, Australia, he and his brother witnessed surf industry and business success first hand via their father, who was a surfboard manufacturing pioneer in the 70s and 80s. Coming of working age, it didn’t take Daz long to forge his own identity in the surf industry and business world, eventually becoming the owner of a surf shop in Kiama on NSW's south coast.

    The business was successful and enabled Daz to live a happy, easy-going and casual life, but all that was rocked in a split second by a freak surfing accident in the remote region of Mentawais, North Sumatra.

    The freak surfing accident broke Darren's neck and resulted in instant paralysis. Alone in the water and semi-unconscious, Daz fought to stay alive until he was rescued by his friends, returned to the boat and stabilized (by getting strapped to a surfboard). But that’s just the beginning... What follows is a 25+ hour ordeal (I stress the world ordeal) returning to the mainland and reaching the safety of a hospital... You're likely trying to guess or imagine what went wrong and what happened... Think worse and times it by x 2...

    Today, Daz still runs his successful surf store in Kiama, but now does it from a wheelchair because of his C7 quadriplegia and spinal cord injury. His co-authored book Beyond the Break explains his unbelievable, life-or-death escape to safety in impeccable detail and reading the book inspired me to interview Darren for Dream Job Ready. For it's not simply the inspiration, motivation or advice on mindset he shares, but the importance, reliance, and motivation he put on work, his job, and on his company, even in the hardest times of his recovery. His 'dream job' really meant (and continues to mean) something to him, personally and deep, and there's a beauty in that which I hoped he would share in this interview. He does.

    Be present for this episode, because it's worth it. Not because Daz is a quadriplegic and in a wheelchair, but because he shares thoughtful, truthful and humble leadership and business ownership insights and advice of the likes we all need to hear before we clock in or clock out of work for the day.

    Please note, I visited Darren at his home in Kiama for the interview (Covid-19 safe) and we had a small sound issue with my microphone. No biggie, you'll make out and understand everything I say, but I'm just calling out that the audio is not as crystal as it normally is or as Darren's microphone audio is, which is perfect.

    Jen’s specialism lies in the pioneering field of voice strategy and voice user experience (VUX), covering all areas of conversational experience design, such as use case definition, user journey mapping, interaction design, character development, and tone of voice creation.

    She regularly speaks internationally on all things voice, especially around ethics and biases in conversational technologies, as well as deep dives on the innovative principles of voice design.

    I first met Jen back in 2009, when she freelanced with me and Rip Curl during a Rip Curl surfing event in Portugal. Jen helped me with content creation and website articles pre, during, and post-event, and I'm super proud of the career she's gone on to create.

    2020 has been one for the history books, but it's been a pivotal and important year for non-profit organisation and charity, Movember.

    Our mental health has been pressure-tested even more than usual, with Covid-19 disrupting and impacting life as we know it.

    Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

    Across the world, men are dying six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. Movember's mission (by 2030) is to see the number of men dying prematurely reduce by 25%. Lofty goal, but so critical.

    Since the first moustaches were grown in 2003, Movember has raised over AUD $1 billion for men’s health, funding more than 1,250 innovative programs ranging from groundbreaking clinical tests and trials to game-changing mental health studies and programs.

    Jason Olive is Movember's Marketing Director and has a dream job with the organisation. After building a healthy career working in advertising agencies, he jumped to the non-profit in July 2019 and hasn't looked back. Awarded CMO 50's 'One to Watch' in 2020, Jason is proud of the work his team and the organisation at large has done this year, but knows its the diverse community of supporters that need the praise.

    Tip for Episode: At any point before this stage, if you can not proceed further, you are not to pitch or present. You must address their enquiry or concern and solve it before moving forward to the next step.

    "[Name], Earlier you told me X was important to you. You also say the steps you've taken to fix it and the impact it has had on you. Have I missed something?

    (If positive) share how your solution fixes their issue or provides to them what they need and ask when you can get started and close.

    Topic: Post-sell and referral.

    Tip for Episode: Deal with buyers' remorse.

    "[Name], you mentioned that you wanted x but then after discussing it you were happy with what I suggested, Are you still ok to proceed?" This will allow the prospect to own their decision and reduce the chances of a cancelled sale, later.

    Tip for Episode: How to ask for a referral:

    "[Name], next time you talk to a friend, college family member or even a neighbour and they mention they need (product or service), would you feel comfortable introducing us?"

    Yes, sure...

    "Great, when that happens please take out your phone and text me their name and number, and I will get in touch. Is that ok?"

    No...

    "Not a problem at all [name], what do I need to do for you to feel comfortable?"

    Noah frames up every sell with the question "what are you trying to achieve"? The answer to this question should then inform the steps you take to hep ensure the person or business you're dealing with understands your goals and hopefully supports them.

    From Noah: Cover these four points to uncover any unforeseen issues or hurdles and address immediately:

    Agree on Purpose: "[name], the reason we are here today is X... Did I get that right?"Time: "[name], I know we said we will have an hour today, is that still ok?"Agenda (what both Parties want to cover): "In order to make this conversation as effective as possible, Is there anything you want to make sure I cover today? When I speak to CEOs like yourself they usually want to know who we are, if we've worked in your space and if we do move forward, how we go about doing the work. But everyone's different. Is there anything that's important to you? [acknowledge] "and here are a few things I want to cover x,y,z, is that ok with you?"Outcome (What do you like to achieve by the end of your time) "[Name], after we go back and forth typically I find that one of two things will happen: we could determine based on your situation and what we do; this is not a fit and I think either of us should feel comfortable saying that. on the other hand we could determine that it's certainly worth looking into the next step." If you have, there's a chance Anna Lee (COO) has played a key role in helping deliver the customer experience and business operations that helped get that product to you. After starting with the company as CFO, Anna is now Chief Operating Officer and in her 6th year, and still claims she has the best job in the country.

    Anna has over 25 years of experience, of which 15 years has been at executive level.   • Dream Job Ready Episode 31: Michelle Battersby (Chief Marketing Officer, Keep it Cleaner).

    After completing her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, Michelle worked through multiple HR roles for finance companies Citi, UBS and PWC in her first 3 years out of university. While she enjoyed the roles and the companies she was working with, she knew there was something else out there that she'd be better at...

    Michelle opened herself to a career move and thanks to a friend got an intro to Whitney Wolfe Herd - Founder and CEO of dating app, Bumble. The two met, connected and Michelle was hired as Country Lead, the first person hired at Bumble in Australia. There she was responsible for building out the local team, localising messaging, brand direction and officially launching Bumble into the Australian market.

    She progressed internally and promoted to Director of APAC Marketing in 2019, where she helped launch the business in New Zealand, Philippines and Hong Kong.

    Three years into the role, Michelle got that "what's next?" feeling again though and decided to seek out a position a little closer to her original love (sport), with that opportunity coming with Keep it Cleaner - the online fitness platform and brainchild of models Steph Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw.

    Just over a year into the role, she's loving the opportunity of learning from founders and working on new projects, such as a new app build.
