  • We are so delighted to be able share one of the absolute highlights of our podcast time together: our chat with Dickinson creator and showrunner, Alena Smith.

    Jay's introduction says it all:
Our guest on today's podcast is an astonishing writer, producer, and director, and has done phenomenal work for projects like My America, the Affair and the Bad Guys, just to name a few. She's also the showrunner and Creator of everyone's favorite show, and if it's not your favorite show, I can't trust you. The one, the only, the most incredible Alena Smith.

We brought some of our most burning questions we have gathered through our love affair with this show. Rather than preview, we invite to dive in and discover what gems Alena shared with us about her journey creating the show, moving the needle on the canon of Emily Dickinson and what the future holds in store.

This week we shake things up for our Dickinson Season 3 Episodes 5 & 6. Our fabulous return guest this week is Luca and they will join is in the full deep dive into each episode. They always bring such great insights and a fresh perspective to this podcast, we are so lucky to have them back with us.

For our discussion: What is coded in Betty's brilliant lines? Is Emily really willing to lose Sue's love for Higginson's validation? Where are we now in Sue's journey to create the world she wants to see and does Austin really buy in? How many of us on the podcast would have been automatic inmates in that asylum? And who would arrange the escape? (Hint: me!)

In our podcast this week we dive deep into Dickinson Season 3 Episodes 1 & 2. We start out revisiting how we are inspired by the fan family of Dickinson. What give us real hope and when do we need to use those quotes?

Where is the family now? Ms Dickinson, is she inspired by grabbing the pig scraper or waking up to question that world around her? Is Austin the wayward truth-sayer now or is he just drunk again? Or both?

Sue continues her journey to create the world she wants to see and the Emily she needs beside her. And where does that leave Emily? Join us in the discussion and let us know what you think!

  • We are wrapping up our own Season 2 as the #DickinsonRewatch2022 continues!

In our podcast this week we dive deep into Dickinson Season 2 Episodes 9 & 10. We explore the real life relationship between Mary and Sue. We discover the history behind the actual Harpers Ferry raid which led John Brown to his execution. How does all this ripple through Emily's family and who is centered the unfolding of it? Same sheep... different century?

Our questions abound as we ponder: where is Austin in his journey to find meaning now? Are we beginning to see the tea-cup perfect world of Mrs. Dickinson shattering? Why doesn't Robyn know anything about penance and when will she stop apologizing for Sue? Hint: never.

And finally, what are the seeds that Alena and her amazing team plan for the third and final season of Dickinson? What's in store and when exactly did Maggie have time to pick flowers for that bathtub? Let's discuss!

As the world around us keeps shaking us to our core, we find rich meaning in Emily's work and the art of Alena and her team.

In our host segment this week we dive into Dickinson Season 2 Episodes 7 & 8. We join the family for spa day and learn what treatments were real and which could have been dreamed up by Emily herself. In our guest segment we are joined by the truly inspiring Dani (Follow her on twitter at @calm_committee) We talk about her first love, poetry and her profound research into other queer women erased in history's dust. She shares a truly beautiful story that connects the poem "Forever is Composed of Nows" to her own journey in life with those she loves. It's truly a wonderful discussion and we are so grateful for all she shares with us.

And what is the meaning behind all that Sam does even down to his name for Sue?

In our guest segment, we are joined again by the amazing Virginie (Vi) and we finish out deep dive into her color theory both in Emily's poems as kind of story painter and in the show. In our host segment this week we dive into Dickinson Season 2 Episodes 1 & 2

In our host segment this week, we do shake it up a bit. We start by chatting through how the many facades of the Dickinson clan begin to rise and fall. The themes of fame and identity woven more clearly now, we dive into the poem that frames the 2nd episode 'Fame is a Fickle Food." In true Dickinson fashion, we explore the dialogue the show begins about Emily's dance with fame. What does the show mirror from the world of 19th century celebrity that continues to resonate with us today? What part of the dance of fame is human nature and what is truly the snake in the grass?

For our guest segment, we are so excited to have multi-talented CourtneyLeighannaE (@PlanetSteinfeld on Twitter) join us again! She's a poet, an artist, a photographer and yes, we do refer to her as The Queen. You'll just have to tune in to find out why!

In the second half of our podcast we meet Sam P and chat about her road to becoming an entertainment journalist and what her style of interviewing would look like.  She shares her perspective on the chaotic and complicated Dickinson family dynamic: what real human drama is communicated and sometimes diffused through humor? We chat score, we chat soundtrack and all ponder this question: "If you could ask Alena Smith one thing what would it be?"

Hint: we all agree one question would naturally be "Would you be a guest on our podcast?"

In our host segment this week we'll dip into Dickinson Season 1 Episodes 3 & 4.  What are the threads of Austin's character arc we see to begin to fray? How did we not notice that Vinnie began her performance art with a headdress? What is the link between the asylum of love and Sue's real life break from the Dickinson drama sibs? And Edward. Oh Edward Dickinson - thou givest and thou taketh away with such patriarchal ease.

In the second half of our podcast we chat with fellow film nerd and producer Christina Raquel about how her foray into origins of fandom lead her to work in the industry. We discuss identity, family and her original theory of how Sue is the synthesizer of all Emily's worlds both real and imagined.

The #DickinsonRewatch2022 has officially commenced as we start a Season 2 of our Podcast.

We'll start with our host segment by taking a deep dive into Dickinson Season 1 Episodes 1 and 2.  Where in history did real life Emily and Sue connect first? What are the magic seeds that series creator Alena Smith may have planted for us from the very beginning?

In the second half of our podcast we chat with Dr. Stephanie Russo about her passion and published works about women in historical fiction. Her new book 'The Afterlife of Anne Boleyn', available now on Amazon! We discuss her published works, the parallels between the mythologies of both Emily and Anne: how they are more often shaped by projection of competing ideologies even more than interpreted historical facts and so much more!

  • Here it is!

Our companion episode for Dickinson's Series finale with our honorary fourth podcast host, the amazing Brooke. In this episode we pose the question: what is in a rose... how is this explored in the show and what did it mean in Emily's life? Who our favorite but lesser known MVP who helped bring Emily's work to generation after generation?

We also share what we are all looking forward to when we make our podcast pilgrimage to the Emily Dickinson Museum when it re-opens (and covid willing) in the Spring of 2022.

  • Inspired by Emily's line to Vinnie "Inspiration needs Inhalation" this week we explore how artists seek to find room to breathe both their creative lives and their walk through the world. Where do you find inspiration? And how do you create more breathe in your life?

Diving into the finale, Ep 10 we discuss what where we find each character and what we hope to sink our teeth into in our 2022 full series rewatch. What does it mean for Austin to take back his power? What imagery stays with us and what left us wanting more? The magic of Maggie. Was Sue really the third mermaid on the left (she was!)

Through 1/3 of us with Covid, snow storms & black outs in a holiday mood - we bring you a slightly messy but totally heartfelt episode.

Our companion episode to this week's will continue this conversation when we invite back Brooke to discuss our first thoughts as we look back on full series. 2022 doesn't mean we say goodbye to our favorite series   - we have so much more exploring to do!

  • Inspired by Emily's line in S3 Ep1 "My Poems are My Children" we'll explore what it means to be an artist. What does an artist owe the world compared to what they owe themselves. We'll dive into Episode 9: what made us laugh, cry and of course, we'll discover the iconic scene at the end which just reminds us why we will have this show Dickinson forevermore in our hearts.

We are really excited to have the multi-talented CourtneyLeighannaE (@PlanetSteinfeld on Twitter) as our guest on this episode. We'll dive into Courtney's own poetry, discover what inspires her and what keeps bringing her back to our favorite show.

Courtney also created our cover art, is a photographer and her crafts can be purchased on Etsy but you better hurry because Robyn is buying everything she can find there. Follow Courtney on Insta for her beautiful photography.

  • In this episode we dive deep into the multiple Civil Wars in Season 3 Episode 8: the Civil War and how it broke death, a family torn apart and Emily's descent into that inferno where she can no longer hide. There are so many layers of symbolism throughout the entire show but this inferno cuts deep. What resonated with you?

We are so happy to welcome Brooke as our guest on this episode. Her insights and queries guide us into a new level of discovery for the show as a whole and specifically for Ep 7 & 8. You won't want to miss her segment! If you aren't already, follow her on Twitter - @dearmarch2
