  • Brandon Sanderson is my favourite author of all time. He writes incredible fantasy books, including Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, and wrote the final 3 books of The Wheel of Time. Brandon's output is legendary - he writes books almost faster than we can read them, and he teaches creative writing at Brigham Young University. I recorded this episode with Brandon as a live stream during the 2020 lockdown, and because it was one of my favourites I wanted to share it with you again as a bonus episode.

In the conversation, we discuss how he kept going when his writing wasn’t being read, the question of originality and how we can make the stuff we need to do (work) more fun. Enjoy!

  • Hey friends, my guest this week is Rupy Aujla - an NHS medical doctor, entrepreneur and podcaster who’s life changed when he suffered a serious heart condition at the age of 23 while working busy shifts as a hospital doctor. But with the power of nutrition and lifestyle changes Rupy was actually able to reverse his condition. He then started his blog, The Doctor’s Kitchen, which soon evolved into a podcast, best selling books, regular television appears and most recently an app. In the conversation me and Rupy chat about a lot of things: his early days working as a doctor and burnout, how to optimise your lifestyle for longevity and his transition from a doctor to a creator and entrepreneur. • A lot of the time we can find ourselves on this hamster wheel of trying to optimise every waking hour of our days, hyper-focused on time and paranoid about how the decisions we make today will influence our future selves. But ultimately the hamster wheel just keeps on spinning when we don’t take a moment to slow down, reflect and enjoy the moment.

  • What’s involved in the equation for success? Some say its talent, innate intelligence, education, privilege, grit, or simply dumb luck. Regardless of how many of these things you think may or may not be on your side, my guest this week will show you how to level up your motivations and aspirations to get the success you want.

  • Whether we like it or not, our desire for status is a fundamental human motive. You’re the hero in your own story that you live out each day and ultimately it’s the unconscious status game you play that defines who you are. But is our desire for status such a bad thing? Will Storr, author of The Status Game tells us that status is what drives you to be a better person, more confident and more successful. In this episode, expect to learn why status is a fundamental part of the human condition and what you can do to gain more status in the modern world.

Julian Hearn started his career digging holes in a road and doing night shifts at a petrol station. He’s now the owner of multi-million dollar powdered food replacement company, Huel, after founding the company at 37. • All of us have different areas of our lives that we'd like to improve. But investing in a life coach isn't always an option. Hasan Kubba is my business coach and the author of the business book of the year 2021 β€˜The Unfair Advantage: How You Already Have What It Takes To Succeed’. In the conversation we talk about some of the concepts in his book as well as having a mini coaching session so you can apply coaching frameworks to your own life without needing to hire a coach yourself. • The average human lifespan is around 4,000 weeks - this sounds scary but it's also incredibly empowering. Journalist and Author Oliver Burkeman says that facing our finitude and how little control we have over our lives is key to living a truly fulfilling and meaningfully productive life. For many years Oliver wrote a popular weekly column on psychology, happiness and productivity for The Guardian called 'This Column Will Change Your Life' and has recently released his latest book 'Four Thousand Weeks: Time And How To Use It' which looks at how our obsessiveness with being busy and trying to master our time can actually make us more unhappy, avoid important decisions about our future and make us less in control of our lives. In the conversation we discuss what most productivity gurus get wrong about productivity, how you will never get everything done and why you should start embracing the fact of human finitude.

  • "It's not about what happens to you it's about how you respond when hard stuff happens" - Dr Julie Smith

After practicing as a Clinical Psychologist for over a decade, Dr Julie Smith decided it was her mission to make high quality and engaging mental health education more accessible online. So she started using TikTok as a platform for therapy. A year and a bit later, Julie has built a following of over 3 million as an online educator. In the conversation we talk about her success as a creator as well as deep diving into some of my favourite chapters from her brand new book 'Why Did Nobody Tell Me This Before?' which takes a scientific approach to topics like motivation, self doubt, identity and what it means to live a meaningful life.

  • Deep Dive is the podcast that delves into the minds of entrepreneurs, creators and other inspiring people to uncover the philosophies, strategies and tools that help us live happier, healthier and more productive lives. In each episode, Ali has conversations with guests from wide-ranging areas around the five pillars of a good life: health, wealth, love, happiness and impact - to empower you to live your best life.

If you'd like to join the journey make sure you're following the podcast on your favourite podcasting app or subscribe to the podcast on YouTube so you know when we release and episode.

  • As the first season of the podcast draws to a close I look back at some of the most inspiring moments from the season including from conversations with Ben Francis, Krissy Cela, Chris Williamson, Unjaded Jade, Mrwhosetheboss and Dr Grace Lordan.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned from all the guests who've appeared this season is that we should embrace uncertainty and the idea of having a plan is a bit of a myth because really we're all working things out as we go along.

I also want to say a big thank you if you've tuned into the podcast each week and an even bigger thank you if you've left a review on apple podcasts and subscribed because that really does help other people hear about the podcast. I hope you enjoy this season round-up and I'll see you in season 2.
