  • Obviously, the best time to go fishing is anytime you can get out on the water.

But we all know that certain conditions tend to be more productive for lure fishos than others. And a common rule of thumb in fishing circles is: "If there's no run, there's no fun".

Now, it's always a bit dodgy to take a single idea like this and apply it to all forms of fishing and all species of fish. So today we're exploring whether the "no run = no fun" rule fits every situation, and if so, how and why.

After all, the more we understand about how fish respond to their environment the better we'll become at predicting their movements and behviours.

  • This is a repost of an early episode of the Australian Lure Fishing Podcast that was just so good it's definitely worth a re-listen (or two). Especially given the current timing with warm weather and river flows sparking some pretty hot mangrove jack fishing of late. Enjoy the episode!

Gold Coast waterways are home to some extraordinarily large mangrove jacks, but they definitely don't come easy! Gold Coast resident and social media fishing personality John Costello has made it his mission to bring some of the areas largest jacks undone and in this episode shares some nuggets that are bound to improve your results on jacks, even if you're fishing places other than the Gold Coast.

  • Tripletail are more common around the northern Australian coastline than most people realise. They're just not a species that is captured by accident all that often, you usually need to go looking for them. And whilst tripletail are a popular sportfishing target in other countries, not as many sportfishers go looking for them in Australia as probably should.

But before you head off and scarper around the ocean looking for triples, have a listen to this conversation with Ryan Stimson. What he learned will not only help you pinpoint where to find tripletail, but will give you a good I dea of what lures to throw at them and how to work them.

Cooby and Cressbrook dams are two very exciting yellowbelly fisheries in South East Queensland, and well worth a visit if you're keen to tangle with yellas. • Topwater flathead fishing has never been so brutal! In today's interview with Russell Babekuhl we discover a whole new side to the humble flathead that few people know exists. It's a style of shallow water, hand to fin combat where oversized crocs obliterate topwater lures and use their might to smoke the angler in oyster covered structure. The stories are more like what I expect from yellowtail kingfish or trevally fishos than those who target flathead. It's inspiring stuff!

  • King George whiting are a popular target with bait fishers, but I'm not sure why they're not targeted more by lure fishers. They're the largest of our whiting and are more than capable of eating a small, well presented soft plastic lure.

Repeat ALF podcast guest Bomber Farrell recently spent some time exploring Tasmania with a fishing rod and in no time found himself picking up KGW with reasonable consistency. So, in today's episode Bomber shares what he's learned, for those interested in giving King George Whiting on lures a crack.

Kaspar Lenigas has been an avid bluewater fisho for many years and regularly fishes offshore for tunas and billfish anywhere from Cairns in the North to Tasmania in the south. • Love your topwater flathead fishing, or just getting started and thirsty for info to help you crack the code? You're going to love today's episode!

Simon Cross' Crossfire Lures have become something of a phenomenon when to comes to cracking the code on big old girl flathead. In fact, they're surpassed only by Crossy's impressive knowledge and theories on flathead behaviour and how to get them to chew.

In this episode Deathy does an awesome job of extracting gold nugget after gold nugget out of Crossy. Stuff that will help even experienced anglers catch more topwater flathead. And not just on Crossfire lures, either, although there is a well justified bias towards this lure throughout the chat.

  • Warming waters with a little freshwater inflow are the perfect conditions to fire up the prawn populations in our estuaries - and when the prawns get active the fish aren't too far behind. In SE Queensland these conditions favour a lot of fish species, but one that's popular with a lot of anglers is the dusky flathead.

Today's guest is Bo Sawyer, and angler who is well credentialled to help us catch a few 'Pin flathead. He's fished the area for 30 years, won a bunch of fishing tournaments (including the Gold Coast Flathead Classic) and now works full-time as a fishing guide with Capn's Charters.
