Terry and Joe return to talk about Cronenberg's queerest film yet: the 1991 adaptation of Naked Lunch.
This one is tough, particularly if you're less familiar with the life and work of William S. Burroughs. Visually it's very surreal and fantastical (the typewriters!), but narratively it doesn't come together in a satisfying way.
Plus: the amazing FX, real life manslaughter, creature buttholes, and *that* Roy Scheider cameo

After wrapping up Clive Barker's Books of Blood, Bryan and Joe dig into Brannon Braga's Trick r'Treat-style anthology, Books of Blood (2020).
It's...fine. Too polished, strange story choices and Bryan is *not* a fan of how much the film hangs on the character of Jenna (Britt Robertson).
Plus: Barker's involvement, speculation about how this went from a TV series to a standalone film, and comparisons to Hulu other Barker adaptation, Hellraiser (2022).

For this episode, Nichole covers 2013’s Under the Skin. Does having a disabled character (played by a disabled actor) as a pivotal part of another character’s turning point feel exploitative or authentic approach? How would it feel to shed the skin that has been a point of pain or even trauma? Would you get into a non-descript van with a stranger?

Sexy & Surreal returns for a third series as Terry and Joe tackle David Lynch's romantic road trip/crime movie, Wild at Heart (1990).
This film is *hot*, but it doesn't quite come together for us, despite the fine work of both Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage.
Plus: references to Elvis and The Wizard of Oz, wanting more of MVP Diane Ladd, Twin Peaks cross-overs, and debate about Lynch doing sex and romance.

For this episode, we’re covering 2002’s May.
Is May another character in the Creepy Loner Girl tradition, or is there more to explore? How can experiences of bullying and mistreatment, often as a result of being different and sometimes connected to disability, make it hard for us to form friendships? Lots to unpack with this “new cult classic.”

Order a driller killer pizza and gather all of your (lesbian?) besties because Jenn, Gena, and Joe are hosting The Slumber Party Massacre (1982).
Up for discussion: Rita Mae Brown's satirical script, Roger Corman-mandated tits and ass, a female collective of survivors, and a sex positive bad girl.
Plus: friends who *actually* like each other, slasher satire tropes, the musical sequel and the contemporary feminist remake.

Nichole is back to cover 2021’s Sound of Violence. This film is absolutely wild – a story of an artist that will go any length to create her masterpiece before she loses her hearing – and Nichole is joined by the delightful Sharai Bohannon to make sure it is given the shine and “What the fuck did we just watch?” discussion it truly deserves.

Bryan and Joe are finally delivering on their promise to check out Midian Unmade: Tales of Clive Barker's Nightbreed, edited by Joseph Nassise and Del Howison.
It's a mixed bag: some stories are great, some are weak, but overall there's too much sameness and too many stories in this collection.
Plus: connections to Cabal/Nightbreed and our faves!

For this episode, we’re covering 2020’s Run. I am excited to revisit this one after recording an episode of the Freaks and Psycho pod on it some time back. This film goes to some dark places with caregiver abuse and Munchausen by proxy, so please be warned.

White Ladies in Crisis returns to discuss William Oldroyd's 2023 adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh's Eileen.
Thomasin Mckenzie once again becomes fixated on a blonde femme fatale (Anne Hathaway) in a film about repression, inner fantasy life, and secrets.
Plus: the changes from the book, scene stealer Marin Ireland, debate about the "feel good" ending and why this movie is *all* about the women.

Bryan and Joe return to zero in on Clive Barker's short story The Forbidden (from Books of Blood Vol. 5) and its two film adaptations: Bernard Rose's 1992 film Candyman and Nia DaCosta's reimagining/remake/sequel from 2021.
We spend a lot of time discussing community and urban legends, whose stories are being told, and who is the intended audience for each iteration (hint: it's *always* white people).

For this episode, we’re covering 2020’s Come Play and Autism/Autism Spectrum Disorder. Intellectual or developmental disabilities have certainly been a sore spot for representation in horror and we’re here to discuss how this film fares in addressing that.

Bryan and Joe return to tackle Clive Barker's Books of Blood Vol. 5.
It has four longer stories, but at least two of the four are distinctly less Barker-y. We spend most of our time on The Madonna (Joe's fave), Babel's Children (the rare political satire), and In The Flesh, which Bryan and Joe have differing interpretations of. More on The Forbidden next time!
